Yes, I have been mastering for over 15 years and work with pretty much any genre. Would love to do a demo for you. Just sign up on our site and you can upload directly to our server ;) -Andy
i wonder if this is the only type of music they will do. because im in a heavy metal band and it would be pretty awesome if we could just send one of our demos were recording to these guys and make it sound epic
I hear the difference, but what they should of done to make it easier for people to hear the difference is have the unmaster + volume vs master + volume instead of just unmaster vs master + volume. The clarity difference of the two would have become more clear for those with bad ears. Also if you can't hear the difference look at the bands, they're popping up on every spectrum of the equalizer with distinct volume dynamic control.
referring to the people that have said that there is only volume applied.... you honestly dont have an ear for this.... explains why a lot of the masters nowadays are just "Hot" i can hear the differences clearly.. and im not a mastering engineer.. obvious EQ, subtractive and additive, stereo enhancement, saturation, a lot of more air in the mastered version... a lot of more life... how do you not hear it?
YEP!! A lot more than just volume level is applied! Those who cant tell the difference should be more careful and practise the misxing and ears! :) You cant imagine how nice it is when you really hear the difference! :)
I'm really awed by all the people here saying the only change is the audio is louder. I have an ear for this and I consider myself an audiophile, even an average joe should be able to tell the obvious differences here. The clarity is coming from a high frequency boost and boosting around the frequencies where the vocals lie. I can tell the stereo field has been fattened and warmed up. Thousands of dollars worth of equipment isn't their to just "turn the volume up".
@djkub1 youre on the right track, but you said the clarity is coming from a high freq boost and where the vocals lie.. actually you left out about 50 to a hundred other processes (and I do mean literally) for many many many other aspects, We dont go to school for 4 years and get a degree to learn how to boost a high end on eq ! youre talking four entire years, lol.. no offense, thats just how it is.. check out SONNOX.. now imagine having to do ALL that to 50 audio tracks, THEN mixdown.
@LiquidChem your right but the upper eq is a quick way to gain a noticable difference in clarity, don't get me wrong though I know thats a really bad route to take but am I wrong? I am entirely aware that EQ is just a single phase of mastering but I was giving an example I'm aware of the limiters, compressors filters and all that gunk. I may not have a college degree in this but I've spent the last five or so years messing around and eventually I learn things, I spend hours at a time researching
The problem is that it's human nature to think the 'louder' mix is 'better' as a knee-jerk reaction. I personally like A/B comps where they're level-matched. Nothing against the material or info... Just my two pennies!
Most of you ppl set out to criticize. The funny thing is, some even claim that only 'volume increase' has been done. What can you call of yourself if all you hear is loudness? If that's all they have to say, they need hearing aids. In my opinion, this is not the best material for example sake, but frequencies have been changed, subtractive and additively; There's also a dynamic change, there's stereo widening, and even saturation!! You can't hear all that?? WOW!!
Plus you can't call this a master until you've compared it with other material in the same compilation. For how would you compare cohesiveness and correlation? Mastering isn't only enhancing the mix, but also preparing the product for lacker mastering, duplication, and distribution. With all the metadata required by the label as well. When all you look for is mix enhancements it shows how little knowledge there is about mastering. It seems some of you need help on getting better mixes :)
@Simplistic7SalvatioN it scares the crap out of me that you call yourself a mastering engineer. I really hope that you only work on your own material. I have been a musician for over 20 years and have been using black dog for over 10 years. I can tell you that mastering is more than volume and eq, I have seen it done. The fact that you can not hear that in the audio provided, well, that is what scares me. It is more than apparent to even a bad set of speakers!
@Simplistic7SalvatioN well beleive it or not thats pretty much all he did... i know this cuz i do alot of mastering myself.. if thats what u wana call it... you just turn up certan knobs here and the and add a few equalizers.. the eqs themself will bring volume up witout ever touching the master volume... trust me i know.. all this so called mastering can be done with many free programs online.. and of course u must have a good soundcard
@MindzEnt lool its not bro its just subtractive EQ n compression techniques, I can hear some nice warmth aswell so I would say he has some nice analogue gear too ! also that is a very good mix so a master like that is what one would expect ! Shout to Black Dog !! Check us out at mixnvp . com Peace !
@DJEDI296 You still have to try to get the best mix you can possibly can. Mastering cannot fix timing mistakes, sloppy editing and/or over EQing. Without a good mix dont bother going to get it mastered. Its like trying to wax a car that was scrubbed with a brillo pad! As far as your mixing, try to keep it clean, keep the overall volume below 0dB to avoid clipping.
I prefer unmastered version, Where I own the Volumeknob! final mix sounds way to bright and un natural

What kind of mix do you require prior to mastering?
