This is the revenge of the nerd who sat in the front of the class room who got his ass kicked everyday who did not have the luxuries that my friends and I have. I use abundant technology but yeah am still competent in today's world, I maintain high academic standards in college, I even write for my school paper. Write a book AFTER examining every fact of the group you're criticizing douchebag.
Great book. Just finished reading it. Passing it on to a few friends. If you don't read this book, have seen the film "Idiocracy", and have used foul language on this page, then, YOU are exactly what the problem is and will be. This is perhaps the greatest problem out nation faces in the very near future.
Wow bauerline you critize the current generation for things that they do now while they are high school and college students but fail to realize what they will and might do. The point is don't critize the current generation when they haven't done anything within the world yet.
@Rfriddle1977 That is an under-exaggerated understatement when labeling this prick! Aim higher with the insults dude!He wants to talk shit on my generation like its a one way street...I can do the same.
The major problem with this asshole Mark Bauerlein is that he fails to realize that "The American Dream"came true. And it was his generation that gave my generation all of the video games and technology that he so arrogantly chastises the younger generation for using and embracing, not to mention the lowering of test scores by his generation. The older generations have"Done it all" and there is no room for improvement. So how is anyone left for innovation in any subject with an outlook like his?
The fact that we've taken our PE and art classes to learn more is crazy. Not everybody is interested in learning math, science or languages. some of us want to succeed with art, others want to be atheletes. The education system is focusing on one type of education and people who don't fit into that group get screwed over.
I think Bauerlein has a strong premise. Many claim that gay marriage and so on is fueling the breakdown of the American family, but I believe it is lack of stronger parenting. Parents do need to step up and raise their children and stop trying to be their friends. This begins by carving out family time, where young people can connect with older members of their families.
RED FLAG. Possible 'white terrorist' attack in Minnesota. Northern white state. They closed the state government and sent the employees home. Maybe to plant explosives.
im 16, and im pretty sure he is very true. I hate it when in my class, every 1 cannot take the fact that they want to defend their respects as average american teens. I my self however dont affiliate myself with the teen demographic as far as basic every day activities. i explore the knowlege of the world, i hav spent a summer reading the bible, quaran, torah, Bagavad Gita, and have studied my naitive language, as well as the systems of egnineering structures. (Chicago Museum of science & Ind)
a alot of bashing on Mr. Bauerlein!!! i give you respect on those opinions. i must post my own opinion...as if anyone cares/// but i agree with his thesis... im 24 and can recognize what it is he's talking about. everyone i know is connected with some sort of networking service.. american culture is a pop culture.. we do not really embrace history, arts, hummanities... so on and so forth. sure, i dont like being called dumb just like the next guy, but i c where he's going in his argument!
Bauerlein's opinions are baseless. He obviously has issues with his students as he considers them to be dumb. Who wants a teacher who talks down to them? I think he should take his book to counceling with him as evidence of his problems.
You guys are just mad because you're the one's that are in the group of dumbasses. Just hang out with a 30- person and you will see the lack of depth they have. "I've never heard of Abe Lincoln, but I know how to work the latest I-Pod and I could tell you when the next X-box game will come out" LOL LOL LOL LOL.
And who's generation gave the younger generation this technology?Whos generation perpetuated the american dream?this guy is passing the buck!Avoiding the responsibility of past actions. From me to MARK BAUERLEIN...FUCK YOU!He has pointed out repeated patterns,or trends. But in the end it is his generation that has fucked up,perpetuated and given the ignorance building tools by perpetuating the american dream which has led to the situation he's complaining about. This guy is a douchbag!fuk you mark
Play outside, or sit inside and read his goddamn books, looking up Smithsonian websites and taking field trips to the White House to "complete" his individuality.
Fuck Apple. You can find companies that make much better models of the same products for a lot less. I use Microsoft XP myself. Apple computers are ugly, for one thing. We had to suffer through Apples in fucking high school (except in Business classes), and it was terrible. Appleworks can kiss it. The iPhone? I don't give a shit! Cell phones are for talking! I'm sick of hearing about all those cell phones with song downloading, picture-taking, and the works. I'm not paying 400 bucks, too.
Apple's got poor user-friendliness, too. The fact that their computer mice feel so weird and don't have right-click should be an early indication of how little effort they really put into it. Oh, sure, there aren't really any mac viruses or problems like with windows, but that's the risk I'm willing to take for better quality overall. Safari is a shit browser, too. Fuck those whiners who sued MS just for including IE on their OS.
"The iPhone? I don't give a shit! Cell phones are for talking! I'm sick of hearing about all those cell phones with song downloading, picture-taking, and the works."
Ohh, so you like to have lots of devices that only do "what they were originally made for"? People want devices that can do lots of things and in an easy way, so that they don't have lots of things in their pockets.
I say, fuck iPods. I don't listen to music that much anyway, and if I feel like listening, I can just watch a music video of the song on YT or d/l it in seconds online. Besides, today's music is a far cry from the good stuff, even just 10 years ago. I like a whole range of songs, from 80s pop, to 90s alternative, to some old school rap (used to like Eminem) and other songs in-between. But the teenyboppers and the boy bands signified a lack of real culture in this generation.
If what this man (the guest) does not make sense to you, then believe me, you need to follow his advice. His concern is genuine; the generation today is short-changing itself.
Have you seen Idiocracy? I think this movie illustrates the relationship very well. Technology kept the society functioning to an extent but it kept them reliant on it rather than their own brains. The average hero says: "tell them to read a book... tell them to I dunno, use their brains!"
I just watched Idiocracy, thanks for the advice. To me it was more about a few corporations controlling society than technology playing a part in civilizations demise.
Aren't people still reading? Young children eagerly anticipated Harry Potter, for example. Book stores are far from going out of business. Isn't the internet loaded with useful information? I read every time I'm on the internet.
So this author thinks we should read more. Remember, he's selling us his book.
me as well. A lot of academics have suspected that the internet is distracting young people rather than making them more usefully informed. What's exciting though is Bauerline's book is the first I've seen presenting actual evidence and data on it.
It also just really rings true. You know? Just on a common sense level.

Your wrong there. You don't know about what you're talking about.
"I use Microsoft XP myself."
Have you used any other OS? I have used about 5.
"Apple's got poor user-friendliness, too."
What a retard. Have you ever used a Mac? I have used both Vista and OS X and OS X has better feature implementation and accesing things is easier.
"The fact that their computer mice feel so weird and don't have right-click"
Stupidity... that's all I can say.
Btw, the Mice has right-click, you dumb ass.

"Apple computers are ugly, for one thing."
Which is why they have won more than 5 design awards, right?
"We had to suffer through Apples in fucking high school (except in Business classes), and it was terrible."
I suppose that it's terrible for you, since you have an IQ of 40 and are too lazy to learn how to use new things.
"Appleworks can kiss it."
AppleWorks' latest release was in 2004. Your school is using outdated software.

Older generations tend to assume the youngest generation is doomed by technology, throughout history. How many times has this proven to be true?
