Wow man. I mean, that's a crazy amount of gold. Now, I'm no "environmentalist", but I definitely feel that if you're going to run a project such as this, then you should be responsible enough to make sure that the natural resources are kept safe. Especially since people rely on that lake. It's not just some unused water source.
@GeekingForJesus look at the history of mining, where ever they go they destroy the landscape, pollute the environment and change people livelihoods. There is no "safe" way to mine profitably in Alaska, to remove every micro gram of gold the company will use cyanide and create mountains of toxic slag, when the Gold runs out so will the corporations.
It is surprising that the ultra-uber-rabid-fascist environmentalists are vegans, yet, they have not a thing to say about the disdainful practice by natives who eat fish and meat.
Personally, I'd rather be able to mine gold and purchase everthing I need to look after myself and my people. If anyone thinks that gold mining will destroy all salmon, in the world, they know nothing about mining and little about salmon. The last BC sockeye salmon run was too big! Salmon are tough!
@bignug1 The biggest pollutant is the arsenic used to extract the gold.Look at Colorado, there gold mining days destroyed there aquifer. Poisoned waters help no one.You don't know anything about mining if you think mud is the only side effect industrial gold mining does to the environment around it.
@deadreck024 No doubt that you are probably afraid of your own shadow. I can't help you with your neurosis. Our natural world is naturally full of heavy metals, radiation, poisons, diseases, death and destruction. Because you want sterile, pure drinking water is not much of a reason to stop me from feeding my family and building anything that I decide to create. You do your thing and I'll do mine. Here's a lesson for you, Junior,...,cyanide is used for gold extraction,.......,not arsenic.
@bignug1 Well for one thing i'm not afraid of anything secondly i agree the world is full of poison and heavy metals. But that doesn't mean you should go ahead and release more poison into the environment. Also your fucking rights end where mine begin and if you feeding your stupid ass family is effecting my family in a negative way, well i guess i would have to end your ass for my own self preservation.Fuck big lumber fuck big mining and fuck big oil.I hope you and your family enjoy your poison.
@deadreck024 I'm glad you are fearless. The world needs less cowards. Perhaps the world needs less people, too. Overpopulation, unemployment, self-sufficiency and personal freedom are yours and my challenges. Hopefully, when 25,000 people receive benefit from a large gold mine, clear-cut forest, or oil well, a sensible remediation and rehabiltation should try to preserve aquifers and wildlife. Our survival comes first, though. Our stupid ass families do insist on eating every day,
Screw the multi-nationals. Prohibit them. Environmentally safe my ass. Corporate rapists get away with too much the way it is. They won't be happy until they choke off the Alaskan Salmon.
Rage against AIG if you must rage. AIG perpetrated a $569 Trillion Ponzi Scheme, nearly bringing down the world's economy, yet their former CEO is still at large, instead of in jail with a fellow Ponzi Schemer named Bernie Madoff.
@5samba5 Damn right I'll rage against them. Bernie's son, as a side note, just committed suicide due to his daddy's BS. He couldn't take it anymore. I'm sure he couldn't take the fact that he had to get a real job to make ends meet.
@aristotlestudent About Madoff's son.... While Madoff hiimself deceived many top official's investments and pissed off many of the powers that be; he's currently safe and sound in prison. He didn't do all the fraud by himself; he guided his son along the way in his fraudulent business. Although, Madoff is safe and sound behind prison bars from the raging angry people he defrauded; the same cannot be said of his son. The powers that be (who were defrauded by Madoff) took good care of his son : )
@KaiserThovex I thought about that too. I guess individuals own shares and are lawfully allowed to own property and enterprises here. I have mixed feelings on this. A lot of gold and copper there for the mining, and though I generally am on the side of progress, still I'd hate to see that pristine water and wilderness ruined. I truly do think there is a way to do both but only with very careful planning and working to contain the mining waste. Look at the Gulf of Mexico. RN
@Angryrnmedic yeah, that's why local interests should be developing local resources. People care a lot more about screwing up their own backyard. I don't get how there can be mixed feelings, it's just straight up stupid... Canadian corporations are notoriously careless outside of their own country.
@KaiserThovex I could consider your view and maybe even understand it after thought had you not felt it necessary to call me "stupid." I don't live where that mining and all is located. Sometimes communication this way doesn't bring about quick understanding as much as living in an area where a matter is being considered. As you can't discuss it without casting the slur at me, I think I'll look elsewhere should I decide to consider that issue. If you really want to do right, you'll apologize.
At $913.10/oz. (which is the present price of gold as listed on the London Metal Exchange), the amount of Au that is theoretically there is worth about $73,961,100,000.
81 billion US pounds of copper is worth about $290,595,000,000 (again, as per the LME).
PS - The California Gold Rush by 1900 only raked in about $40 billion in Gold, in today's dollars. Just to put into perspective how big this might become.
Luckily, Alaska's native system is a stark contrast to that of the mainland US and Canada which provides for a stronger voice in operations (i.e. no harmful reserve or strict status issues with a corporate startup program). A lot of people don't know that native groups control or have entitlements to the VAST majority of land within and surrounding the area and are main consultants in the supply strategies of those pushing forward Pebble Mine. In fact over 6 groups are involved in the areas.
MOMMY, WHATS IMPEACHMENT???? WELL LITTLE ALEX, IMPEACHMENT IS WHAT DEMOCRATS ARE SCARED OF... THEY TOO, ARE SCARED OF A "BOOGEYMAN", your NOT ALONE! IMPEACHMENT IS ABOUT STAINING BLUE DRESSES FIGHT MANNEQUINISM, AMERICA! FIGHT MANNEQUINISM, AMERICA! FIGHT IT! IMPEACH THE GOD DAMN SONS OF BITCHES OH YEAH, IM WAITING FOR MY STIMULUS!!! =-) SHITPISSFUCKCUNTCOCKSUCKERMOTHERFUCKER&TITS HEY MEDIA MONITORS...... WHAT IS IMPEACHMENT? HEY MEDIA MONITORS...... WHAT IS IMPEACHMENT?
Don't forget slavery of the Africans... sadly it took the white skinned folks a lot longer to figure out how to pick their own cotton... I remember on the news about New Orleans when black people were breaking shop glasses it was looting but when the white do it its "family's trying to survive".
Good point, when the so called whiteman comes and sets up shop, he destroys everything, chops down the trees, puts concrete all over the ground, spoils the rivers, he cannot live in harmony with nature, as far as slavery goes:
Revelation 13:9 If any man have an ear, let him hear.
10 He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.
Huh? You mean the fake Jews outta the Khazar Empire?
Revelation 2:9 I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
Those Edomites in the State of Israel are not the real Jews, the real Jews are the so called blackman in Amerika.
Co-operation always promised to the Aboriginals but never kept it, so the First-Nation people are always losers by their games, we've seen it before too.
