I have just been accepted with a pretty low GPA, so don't give up if your grades aren't up to par. It's mainly the portfolio and the personal statement that got me in.
I'm going to an interview soon, I feel pretty confident as my grades are for the most part pretty good and my portfolio has been accepted by MICA , SCAD, and various other schools, although I feel like they may be even more difficult. I don't know what they want for scholarships based on your portfolio though, I have a ton of figure drawings and still lifes but it isn't a concentration or anything like the AP portfolio.
Thank you! I'm 14 now and I'm about to start high school. I live in Florida so how is that going to work? How can I save money for the school? Do they have classes to teach you about being a comic book artist (if not I'll go for photography or video editing)? What kind of grades you need to have in high school for that school? GPA? What will they look at? Please answer my questions soon in stressing about it already ( coming from a teen)! Thank you
the acceptance rate is 68%. that's not competitive. the competition for scholarship, however, is significant, especially considering the price of the school. i suppose you could say that unless you've got $200k lying around to spend, SVA is competitive because you have to pay for it somehow, and scholarship is the only way to reduce costs.
ah i want to apply to SVA , i'm a junior in high school and i'll be attending their summer program in a couple weeks in july for painting and drawing. i've also met with them in person a couple times already, i'm working on my portfolio and putting my heart and soul into applying for art schools. i'm so nervous ! ~ sorry for the venting hahah
I was accepted to SVA straight out of high school, i didn't go but i just finished up freshman year at my other college and i hate it, transferring to sva and cause i was accepted they were able to roll my acceptance so i can start this fall REALLY excited!! =)
i received my acceptance letter yesterday and i couldn't be happier. i would say your best bet is to be driven, creative, inventive, unique. Unique is a big thing. A lot of things have been done before. you need to show how well rounded you are. I am a transfer student.
SVA is so bloody expensive :( I'm from Ireland and there is NO good art schools that specialise in cartoon and animation. I really want to go there, but the travel costs as well as admission and housing and materials and living are gonna cost me thousands per year. All I can hope that'll I'll get a schlorship or a grant from my own school.
@ghostie7790 It depends what you put in it, I would suggest things you like to do on your free time, stuff from art classes in high school, It's also good to maybe put a few figure drawings in there too, that's what they liked in mine.
My interview was face to face as well..It went pretty smooth...The individual who interviewed me at the time was concerned about my dedication at first..I graduated in 2009 so I did good ? lol
Good advice but how does a kid who must have some sort of talent to be at SVA do such a shitty video that has audio noise up the ass and a shaky camera? Wow, I hope your not trying to tell people your at SVA and "this is how I did it." How embarassing. When I went there years ago it was filled with 80 or 90% of kids who werent really talented at all but their mommy and daddy were loaded and could afford the tuition. You should of known better.
It takes dedication and commitment to be at SVA. Once you are in, take advantage of all the resources the school has to offer. I took out film equipment many times. Learn, practice and network!
@wetalk2deadpeople My friend had a 2.something, 1490 on the SAT's, B's and C's and he showed the college that was what he wanted to do and now he's enrolled. Passion and talent trump jaded grades from geometry and Jane Eyre.
Anyone who's serious about having a career in visual arts has everything to gain at SVA, but it's hard work and dedication. Of course not everyone makes it, and I'm sorry to hear you couldn't.
Most people I graduated with at SVA are now just scraping by freelancing either for themselves or for some crappy agency. At least the ones that werent lucky enough to land a quality job. Some of the most talented dedicated designers I know now up and changed careers. All im saying is just know what your getting into before you drop your hard money for at SVA.
That's probably about right. In the US you have to pay an application fee though (around $50-$100 dollars) so they really only get serious applicants. I honestly don't think SVA is a TOPTOP art school, yes it is a good art school, but it's not the BEST. RISD(rhode island school of design) is widely known as being the best art school in the US.
But isn't RISD in the middle of nowhere? Like Ringling. I would rather study art in a city like NYC, where there's so much art and creativity and things to inspire you, all around you. I hope to go to FIT, actually, but we'll see.
What are your thoughts on FIT? And where are you studying?
RISD is not in the middle of no where. It's in providence, rhode island, the largest city in the state of rhode island. Providence is city. It is a small city yes but it only takes a short train ride to get to a majormajor city, like boston or nyc from there.
I am going to transfer as an animation major to SVA or RISD for the fall 2010 semester.
You are canadian? I wouldn't waste my time with american schools if I were you. It is tough enough for americans to go to these places.
The place is about the size of where I live, and I live in the suburbs. And it's not THAT close to a major city :/
Why would it be a waste of time?? It's not like they don't accept international students. It only costs around $50 per application, and I wouldn't mind taking that out of my savings if it means a chance to study/live in NY (:
It's a waste of time because (I don't know the laws in canada, if the canadian government would give you money for an american university...) you won't be able to take out a loan, and the government won't give a non-american national any money. So you will be paying about $50,000 out of pocket annually for this school. I know because I used to look into studying abroad but it's basically impossible unless you can magically get a citizenship.
@oceangust I live in an apartment that is fairly reasonable as far as price goes, and you only have roaches and rats if you are careless with living conditions. However in the actual CITY, like, Skyscrapers at every turn city, then you're right it's mostly freaking 6-foot-long rats.
My portfolio was pre-accepted and I got accepted within a week. Yay right? But now I have to wait a year because life is hard and I don't have $500 to register. T_T
My dream is SVA. But I think that I don`t have a chance in getting there, not that I can`t draw, but I live in Europe AND I have disabilities [physical]. Double trouble. :/
Any suggestions that could help a person like me? I really wanna expand my opportunities and try everything I can.
I hate that it probably is not possible for me to go to just an interview there, fly over a continent just for that. :D
Never give up, there is nothing that can break the human spirit, don't EVER let anyone tell you you aren't worth it, never back down, look challenge and opposition in the face, and know that you are strong, you are special, show the world you arn't afraid of anything, go out there, with high hopes and no fears, exposed to whatever comes your way, and never back down You arn't proven strong by what you accomplish, but by how much hurt you can take and still stand up, again and again. never forget
I hate to tell you this but it would honestly be impossible for you to go to an american university when you're not an american national. Unless you have $200,000 in the bank somewhere, the government won't give a non-american national shit. Or unless you get an american citizenship magically within the next few months (not going to happen). Forget about SVA, europe is a better place to go to uni, and remember - it's fucking free! It costs a fucking FORTUNE in the states to go to college.
Well. I have dropped the thought of attending SVA, but I have found something else - Alberta College of Art + Design in Calgary, Canada. And the positive thing is that I have relatives living in Calgary suburbs, so yay. But still, pretty pricy. But, if money wasn`t the problem.. could it be possible to organize everything?
Europe.. I don`t know, might be free, but still, I do not want to study here..
Canada would be impossible too, unless you can be counted as a canadian national and get money from the canadian government, you'll be paying $30,000 a year for school. I actually really liked a school in canada (I'm an american) but since I'm not a canadian national it would be impossible for me to attend.
Why not study in Europe? The UK has some great schools, Paris has some great art schools too. You don't have to come all the way to the americas to find good schools.
But in Canada [the school I checked] there are a lot of interantional students and schools are nicely welcoming students from abroad, so why do I need to be a citizen? And there I need like 20,000 CAD a year and if I have people I know there that can help me with stuff around the city and stuff I need to know [my relatives], why not try?
I don`t want UK no matter what and to live in a country, where my english doesn`t have much of a use, like Paris.. that is not awesome. ='D
