for tai chi....wasnt that a little fast? whenever most people do it, many masters included, they perform tai chi slowly...i mean isnt tai chi about using your opponents force against them? still...very good form...not to choppy like most....
i know... ive been taking taiji for a looong time... i guess im just used to seeing only master park do it fast... thats all... we dnt practice chen style... i cant think of the style right off bat.... but yea i get the point
taiji is full of paradoxes I've learned 4 onces of force to move a thousand pounds, move slow to move fast. as for using the force against them yes it is, but its not limited to being soft and using the force against the opponent. its about a 50/50 split as with the theory yin and yang. as far as i know anyways taken about 4-5 months of chen style and had a lot of theory ...
Practising slowly is a technique among many to practise taiqi as a martial art. Early last century Yang Luchan popularised taiji (though i don't think it was under that name at that stage) to city intellectuals and promoted it as a health building exercise. There are also fast forms, and moves with fa jing /power/oomph:p (not sure about pinyin spelling sorry).
in pinyin it's jin, but close enough =P. as long as you know the character and other people know what you're talking about it doesn't really matter. cheers, big-ears.
Chen style Taijiquan is taught slow at first in order to get the correct movement and muscle memory. Slow is a means not an end. Once you have the correct body mechanics then you move fast. Master Chen in this video is also performing the Cannon Fist set, which is the second form of Chen Taijiquan. Cannon Fist, or the gifhting set, is performed fast and with explosive fajing movements.
You said the spine must be straight (rule #8). Grandmaster Chen Fake taught the opening and closing of the spine.

you can see that he isnt just performing it mechanically, but that he know the applications.

Chen style taijiquan is performed with changes of tempo and fast, as well as slow, movements. Check more Chen style videos and you will see.
