OH MY GOD!!! To think one of the Co-writers of The Dark Knight was almost a Homocide Detective!! That's awesome! Who better to come up with the Batman stories realistic enough for Nolan's vision than someone who has actually gone through law school and was a step away from a life of fighting crime himself?
All I have to say is that this makes me proud to be from Michigan. I can now say a Michigan boy convinced the creator of Inception and DarkKnight to work on Superman. The way it SHOUlD be.
I loved the scene where the mob boss gives Batman good advice. That was one of the best scenes in any movie. However the rest of the movie wasn't near as good.
Flash sounds awesome. Why hasn't he done that yet! No, better yet, Inception was in the writings for 10 years. Hopefully Flash might be aging just as well. I'd look forwards to him being the director for that.

Saying it can't be taught is the same as saying it can't be learned. If it couldn't be taught then writers working in groups would never improve their writing skills. This is clearly not the case since many writers improve greatly after spending time in writer's rooms. Just because there are poor educational models doesn't mean there is no way to teach something.
David Goyer is a really good screenwriter. He did a good job writing Blade and Blade II. But when it came to finishing with Blade: Trinity, that was just bad. It could have been so much more, a real disappointment.
@DaewooMassacre I don't think his work is particularly impressive. Definitely not prodigious. I know I'm just a youtube troll and all but I don't think he's that special. The Batman films I've heard he was used just for writing what Christopher Nolan thought up and his older films are just standards from the action or horror genres mostly. Think this guy is pretty overrated tbh.
@StraightEdgeVideos Yeah, I know that. Doesn't say much for his original vision though. I think Jonathan Nolan is better. Goyer just has this rep for being an action guy and people employ him because they think he's a specialist.
Goyer seems to place too much importance on his own work in BLADE as the driving force for which studios invest in the superhero for projects. Maybe I'm wrong, but he just seems like he's just self promoting.
Are you kidding me, those were a step above Trinity but they also sucked.
But no matter, I still like him & believe that he will give Capt. America & the Deadpool movie a great treatment.
Anyway, his best two films will always be Batman Begins & Blade II. Blade 1 was good but not as good as II and I don't think he had as big a hand in the Dark Knight screenplay. It was mainly Jonathan Nolan's screenplay & Goyer supposedly added a few scenes & dialogue
@SeanConnery9000 You're incorrect. Chris Nolan and David Goyer came up with the entire story for The Dark Knight. Jonathan Nolan had the easy job of just writing the screenplay from the outline of the story. Then Chris Nolan went through the screenplay Jonathan Nolan wrote and made corrections.
Blade Trinity had alot going on, not just him directing, but Wes Snipes having issues on set, studio but-in issues when it came to jessica biel, ryan reynolds cut outs, plus he got wind of the batman reboot, and said F-it at the end.
Yeah, I knew about that but Goyer was also trying to have a spin-off with Biel & Reynolds & since the film did terrible, the actors said forget about it & Wesley Snipes had tax problems
Wow, the Flash! can't wait for that one to hit the box office. Actually been waiting for a good flash movie for a while now. Green Lantern would actually be an awesome movie also.
You really don't need to go to film school or screenwriting classes at all. You can learn just as much (if not more) from reading every book you can and most importantly - blogging. read other blogs about screenwriting etc. You'll learn the basics so fast.
You can learn a lot just by reading books, but if you're serious about learning screenwriting you should at least take some classes. After you've learned enough to be on your own, books will be easier to understand and learn with. Also reading scripts is the best way to learn faster.
I disagree that you need to go to classes. While I do agree they're helpful because they MAKE you read and write what you need to - you have the encouragement, drive etc - I don't believe they're required to 'make it'.
But yes, the two most valuable things you can do as an aspiring writer is read (scripts) and write (scripts).
I heard millions or thousands of screenwriter vicitm getting hand off from hollywood. I don't know if true or not. Hollywood do steal screenwriter idea without give them credit. They sell the ideas to highest bidder.
When formatting a phone call in your screenplay. say the call is three pages of dialouge. Under the characters name to you have to put "into phone" or "over phone" after each piece of dialouge? it takes up sooo much space on the page it like cuts it in half. Whats the right thing to do here?
My advice - leave it to the director. Just show the dialogue. Either add (OS) after character we don't see, or say something at start like "we cut between the two over the following phone call". Don't worry about visuals - dialogue is most important. The viewer will see them talking into the phone so you don't have to mention it on paper. Hope that helps some.
You should put (ON PHONE). It does take some space on your page, but it doesn't have to. Instead let your characters talk through their actions. Actions worth thousands words.
Thanx for posting this very insighful video. I am an aspiring screenwriter myself and crave anything on successful screeenwriting and better writing. Keep the posts coming. A+
