He's just mailing this in and having fun with it for a local morning TV show in his old age. It's for curiosity's sake since most people haven't heard him do it even though he wrote it. It's not intended to be "The Ultimate Version of I'm a Believer". The Monkees and Smash Mouth both did much better versions. Neil would tell you that. He's got nothing to worry about and doesn't need defenders. He's a living legend.
