i don't think there's a downside to any race really...the protoss might be expensive but their units make up for it, the zerg are weak but cheap, and terrans in the middle. i guess each race is preferable depending on your micro/macro ability - i.e. good at macro - go for zerg, if good at micro - protoss..and then terran i'm guessing are the most challenging but perhaps also the most versatile
