Whoever wrote this theme should have credited Gustav Holst, the composer whose best known work is the the suite The Planets. It's obvious that the final movement of The Planets, Neptune the Mystic, provided the inspiration for this theme
This little 30second piece was the creepiest thing I'd ever seen or heard on TV at the time ... it scared me every week -- but made me KNOW that something incredible was about to happen. The TWILIGHT ZONE was and is the best 22 minutes in TV history.
Nice work ! but it's not as "abstract as the real one (especially the shot with the mountain).
I think the first season's introduction is the best, even if it's tune and visuals don't stuck into your mind as violently as those of the definitive one. It has a more "Lovecraftic" feel to it and the music is soooo mysterious.
Even better was the "eye" opening tinkered with in a few Season 1 eps. Same Herrmann music, only opening with a steady bass 'heartbeat' until the eye fades out. My personal favorite of all the TZ openings.
Mr. Serling did not "rehash" somebody elses old story with a few changes, the way writers do today...he is the one who wrote the ORIGINAL story...THEY COPY HIM!
This first season introduction was animated by U.P.A.. Musically, this is actually the show's original main title, composed by Bernard Herrman before being replaced by Marius Constant's main title (which was two pieces of music put together). I like Herrmann's better.
As much as I did like the later seasons of Twilight Zone, the first season theme is far better. Composers may try to impersonate Bernard Herrmann, but this proves there is only one Bernard Herrmann.
I know numerous people who don't remember this theme song at all and think that the newer, more well-known theme song was always used. Most frustrating! Thank you for this. I intend to send the link to at least 10 people who I know. I believe Bernard Herrmann wrote this theme, which is not surprising, considering the most excellent music that he has written for Hitchcock movies as well as other films such as "The Day the Earth Stood Still" 1951 movie.
I agree with you on that. I was used to the "standard" theme music for TZ. But one night they ran one of these older episodes and the music alone made my hair stand on end. I was 15 then, and that was 26 years ago. It still gets my attention today. I don't like the fact that every time they make a new version of a classic show, they always monkey around with the theme music. That's a part of the reason Dragnet remakes are a failure. Nothing beats the "classic". Mike in Fresno, Ca.
it's is soo sci fi, just cuz you specify what it is doesn't mean it's not got a major sci fi element, in my opinoin the shows were very science fiction theme to me, and keep in mind my definition of science fiction may be different than what you are thinking of
It is not only the music but Rod Serling's narration for this intro make this my personal favourite out of all the introductions. I still like the second season's titles as well.
This is outstanding work, Masterhoshi! Rod Serling would more than approve, I believe. I prefer the original Bernard Hermann theme as opposed to the famous Marcus Constant theme (with apologies fo Herrmann, who as music director recommended it to Serling). Herrmann's theme burrows deep into the soul; Constant's examines the mind.
That's interesting you mention that. I'm very likely to reinterpret that theme as well. These intros are really interesting visuals taken form a artistic way. Which is why I decided to make them.
You're just as imaginitive as UPA was when they created the original title in 1959, 'masterhoshi'! Great!! But you forgot to "pan down the stars" at the end- that transition was always important before the actual story began....
Thank you very much! You're right, I left it out in this one but I planned on using it when I actually make the Twilight episode this intro was remade for.
Nice remake of the original Twilight Zone intro. Im not sure if its just my monitor or the video, but as I watched this I could barely make out half the opening because it was too dark..and I had my monitor settings up as bright as they would go!
i like all the intros, i dont really have a favorite, i hear the "dee dee dee doo" one all the time and its nice to see this one again, it is creepier than season 2..
I know the second theme musical score is the most famous and the most popular, but I do like the music in this first season introduction better -- the score is by Bernard Herrmann.
I'm not sure which season it was but I think the spinning tunnel intro is the most known one.But like many of you have said this one is my fav and the one that scared me as a kid watching it late at night lol
this is my favourite opening to the zone. awesome. i saw this on BBC2 UK in the early eighties when they had double bills late at night. great stuff. cheers for posting

*Not bad*!!! You completely captured the mood with the new graphics. Kind of an Yves Tanguy feeling. I vastly prefer Herrman's original music.

I always thought this theme more closely represented the show's true tone and character, better than the later, more "beatnik" version.

The surreal images in this intro bring to mind the work that Salvador Dali did for the dream sequence in Hitchcock's "Spellbound".
Hermann was and remains the master of scary film scores.
