Its really too bad that Martin can't or won't hit the notes from the studio version. Every time he goes down instead of up on here, its like the air's being let out of the song. Great otherwise, but that's really annoying; the studio version is so damn passionate.
Not sure if I'm calling out the elephant in the room here, but what happened to Tony Martin's voice??? Why isn't he hitting those monster notes he did on the CD recorded just 12 months earlier?? Quite possibly one of the coolest, heaviest metals songs written of all time.
@KostasNaoussa1996 You're ignorant, as almsot anyone is, about this album. This song in particular is about a man who has gone too far and regrets his decisions (He saw the world...). He regrets the evil he's done, and the tragedies he's created. He knows he's going to die. He knows he's going to hell. He knows he's going to burn. He can do nothing. All he can do is tell off humanity (Misguided mortals...) and then be a huge badass to Death by not following for his tricks.
Such a shame that this music will likely never be played again by the original people... This entire album is excellent. Hell, virtually everything ever with the Sabbath name, in my opinion, is fucking excellent. That being said, I can not listen to Seventh Star or Forbidden... Although there are a few good riffs here and there in Forbidden. The addition of the rapping guy or whatever in Illusion of Power just killed that album for me.
All the albums with Martin are great and he sings great too.But i have noticed that in live performances,he can't reach the same high notes,even here in 1989 where he is supposed to be on the top of his career and in great shape.Great studio singer but really poor for the concerts.Nowadays,he is a total loser.He can't reach the high notes he doesn't even try.
I think that Bulter is very underrated. Imo best sounding bassist. Anyway - black sabbath wasn't about Iommi, for sure wasn't about Ozzy either - it was about all of them recording Black Sabbath, Master of Reality, Vol4, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Sabotage which is most influential recording ever (even more than hendrix imo) - it started heavy and doom and give lesson which is enough for 40 years as we can see. 2nd Iommi is Mustaine, but 2nd isn't ever better than 1st.
this song is Prophetic.... as most Sabbath Songs are....His reference to >> "the spirit of man can't be free" to me it refers to us being enslaved by the powers at be whom have an evil agenda....enslaving us by materialism ....
the second age of black sabbath was not the same that the beginnings with ozzy as singer. I think ozzy was a legend of black sabbath but when he had to leave the band, good singers came like tonny, and news styles of music too.
This song is based on an ancient story of an italian fisherman by the name of "Santo Della Ricadonna" who vanished without a trace while fishing for mussels and scollops in 1584. His native town of Stromboli celebrates his passing each year by cutting a peice of Cyprus pine, dousing it in vinegar and burning it on hot coals. The incense generated is said to create an aura of his figure and his voice saying "Misguided Mortals - You'll burn with me ..... spirit of Man cannot be free".
To everyone wishing that tony would work with tony again... I suggest you look up his current (within the last few years) live vocal performances right here on youtube. Yeah... exactly. This is the best version of this song. It's raw and real. The album this is from does'nt even sound like a sabbath album!
@creepychris11 Tony was hands down one of the best singers Sabbath have ever had. If they ever were to write songs again - which honestly, I don't see happening any time soon - I am sure they would be better than all the crap we are listening to nowadays.
@ozzy554 I'll pass thanks. His vocals have been frighteningly inconsistent since the end of the 90's. There are MUCH better choices out there for Iommi to collaborate with. I'm not sure if you understand my original comment. I meant that martin is absolutely SPENT! He sounds good on this clip but that voice died fifteen years ago!
I like sabbath way better with Tony Matin, Glenn H, DIO. The music is really awsome.Also Ian G did a great job live on the born again tour and album. That concert was kick ass. Not a ozzy fan at all. But the songs were good. I hope Sabbath can get Tony M or Glenn H back. One day
@MattDieHazzard666 It's not that I don't like Dio. In fact, I've got nothing against Ronnie; he was easily one of the best metal vocalists ever and I'm just a sucker for his work with Rainbow. I just don't think any of the albums who featured him are on pair with Sabbath's best. Plus, as great as Dio was, I've never found his voice really matched Sabbath's sound . That said, I'd still pick Heaven and Hell over Cross Purposes, though.
I've listened to Black Sabbath most of my life...I'm an Ozzy Fan (Big-time)!! But over the years my preferences have changed..... Tony Martin isn't Bad... But of all the Sabbath singer's to date, I'd have to go with DIO !!!... (Jeez, what a loss) :(
Not alot of point saying this but i will anyway, I do like Tony Martin as a rock singer but can you imagine if Dio had done the Headless Cross cd, that would've been awesome!
no matter what i still think ozzy has it all when it comes to black sabbath, dio was unbelievable singer, but sabbath with tony martin is my youth so when death calls ...no matter what is....my youth
my favorite album of black sabbath is headless cross and this song is fucking great and all songs from this album are great...awesome...i think this album is too underrated...shoud be first...i think these songs are better than ozzy or dio period songs...more melodic..better mood...great solos..riffs...everything...
I don't care if Dio or Ozzy's voices are better than Martin's...but this song is my fuckin' favorite from any period of Sabbath.....absolute perfection!!!!
@AFtheRocker Of course it's Sabbath. It's just a different era, with different influences. That's why Black Sabbath still is one of the greatest bands of our time, cause they weren't narrow minded, they evolved.
@findemundo ozzy no hacia tonos altos...y tiene una voz muy parecida a dio...dio ahora no se podia los tonos altos...no vamos a criticarlo,aun asi suena bien
Unfortunately he answered the call and he`s gone, let`s keep rocking for all those great bands and singers that make this world better with rock and heavy metal. Is it a concidence the way he died?
@petriofsweden Murray, Martin and Powell were definitely loyal replacements to play with Iommi. Powell and Murray were best friends. I don't know what the odds are of Murray coming back. Since Ronnie died, Iommi has only done an EP with Ian Gillan. So I don't know what will happen next.
@petriofsweden I agree. Iommi, Dio, Geezer, and Vinny Appice got together and toured again as Heaven & Hell. Iommi, Martin, and Murray should do the same thing. They could call their band "Headless Cross" (I think that's a better band name than "Eternal Idol," but I don't care what they call themselves) and tour, maybe even do a new album. Cozy Powell has passed away (RIP) so Bobby Rondinelli or Eric Singer could play drums.
this era of black sabbath stands alone, and not because it's better or worse than the other eras...this era is sadly missing from the record shelves...what about a sabbath "best of" for the forgotten singers of sabbath?...the studio version of this song is better for the vocals, though...
yep the headless cross is the exaclty the same age as me i adore the album it is to me better sabbath than ozzy singing though i do reconise that he is the founder and the first just tony martin to me is better.
@thesicknessishere Iommi = founder... Iommi is god! Iommi is Black Sabbath not Ozzy. It is his band, not Ozzy's. Any good singer, bassist, and guitar can work with Tony Iommi and make a great album, even if it is just one album. Those who can work with him well, Ozzy, Dio, and Tony Martin are allowed multiple albums with Mr. Iommi (a.k.a creator of Heavy Metal and of Black Sabbath)
@NerdWerld Saying Black Sabbath is Tony Iommi's and not Ozzy's is no less horrible than those who thinks that Black Sabbath is anyone else's. Black Sabbath belongs to the lineup: Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi, Bill Ward, Geezer Butler. Noone else, they started the band and they all share 1/4 of the right to the band name.
@NonstopTrapdoor For me music goes beyond band´s name and who owns it. Black Sabbath is Ozzy, Tony, Buttler and Ward, but Black Sabbath is also Heaven And Hell. And Tony Martin sung in excellent form in 4 Black Sabbath studio albums. Hughes and Gillan recorded also 1 prominent album each. Black Sabbath is a monstrous dragon with several heads.
@NonstopTrapdoor no mate...........no matter if it is ozzy,dio,gillan,martyn,me or you singing.....the Master of all Riffs,the composer ,the mastermind,the leader is Tony.........abd by the way.....why ozzy was ok in the 80s when sabbath kept going around with differetn line-ups???? maybe because they didnt have the greate succes that they had with hte dio reunion...??? and mr Ozzy deceided that there are frantsize issues???
The Tony Martin BS era is so underrated, it only started getting the acknowledgement it deserves the recent years. Personally, I still think no one can surpass the greatness of Ronnie James Dio in Sabbath.
holy shit i thought i heard Dio talking at the beggining but then i saw it was that tony martin guy. the way he was talkin right at the beggining i swear it sounded so damn much like Dio.
sabbath needs a new singer ...rip ronnie (your the man) but one thing for sure it dont need to be bitchass ozzy he dont deserve the position ,hes suing sabbath for christs sake fuck him !!! tony martin would be better than ozzy ..i mean who the fuck wants to hear paranoid thats all ozzy brings to the table fuck that there is way more to sabbath than just paranoid and iron man
Just finished reading the black sabbath story 1979-2005 , and they did,nt half treat this bloke badly. It is disgusting , when you consider that he was with them longer than any other singer[par ozzy]. He also made some top rate albums with this track coming from the best of the six. He deserves a lot more credit than he,s ever received.
It's listen-able LOL just playing for real it's a great song, great lyrics,
hard to get used to vocals without DIO/OZZY
no one will beat Match ozzy -can sing very strong high notes well and high (but not talk) and Dio is very strong in vocals can sing anything not just metal!
He didn't "fuck" it up, he didn't hit the high notes. Tony was always a great studio singer, but had quite a bit of problems live, so, being the experienced singer he is would change the melodies a bit live to prevent his voice from cracking or going out of key.
Feel free to listen to the studio version, where to you it isn't "fucked up"
Live is a different beast for singers. Many don't put on pitch-perfect performances night in, night out. And as far as what people don't like, it is uneducated opinions, much like yours.
Its really too bad that Martin can't or won't hit the notes from the studio version. Every time he goes down instead of up on here, its like the air's being let out of the song. Great otherwise, but that's really annoying; the studio version is so damn passionate.

Really, a great song from Sabbath. It proves that Black Sabbath is not only made with Ozzy Osbourne.
Tony Martin is a great singer, as Dio(RIP).

long live Cozy!!! This is one of the greatest moments of Black Sabbath!
heavymetal1983 1 year ago

How did he fuck it up? I don't notice anything...
BlackSabbath1776 1 year ago
@BlackSabbath1776 no effort in that part of song
Melekthavs 1 year ago
@Melekthavs
Oh okay, I see that then.
BlackSabbath1776 1 year ago
@Melekthavs
He didn't "fuck" it up, he didn't hit the high notes. Tony was always a great studio singer, but had quite a bit of problems live, so, being the experienced singer he is would change the melodies a bit live to prevent his voice from cracking or going out of key.
mysteric70 1 year ago
@mysteric70
he did fuck it up, for me at least. Don't be such a explain-ready guy. No one likes that.
Melekthavs 1 year ago
@Melekthavs
Feel free to listen to the studio version, where to you it isn't "fucked up"
Live is a different beast for singers. Many don't put on pitch-perfect performances night in, night out. And as far as what people don't like, it is uneducated opinions, much like yours.
I'm done.

Iommi rules! The only man I worship is him.
