Well, maybe people in western countries still don't feel rich enough to give money away. I don't understand, why Madonna, who fights against HIV, too, appears in these stupid ads by Versace, Vuitton, ... I mean, it's cold-hearted to buy dresses for $1000 or bags for $500, if you could help people in Africa with this money. A dress for $100 would be enough. I really don't understand, why Madonna "teaches" people, that it makes sense to buy these luxury products. That's "poison" to their minds.
who would of EVER thought i's see annie in a rural part of my country! in a 'spaza' - thatz a zulu name for their country stores/supermarkets. she could of gone to all our glitz and glam areas, where you have monolithic supermarkets that have everything that one would need! our big supermarkets are 1st world but she went right out into third worlda povery stricken rural areas. i'm amazed and admire THE LENNOX again!!!
Annie talks about women because SING is 23 female singers raising funds & awareness about HIV in Africa. The support is for all affected by HIV, but a major issue is getting help for pregnant women. 1/3rd of pregnant women in South Africa are infected most don't have any symptoms so are not aware of their status. It only takes 1 dose of an antiretroviral drug to stop the baby becoming infected but even this isn't available to most women. Hence the video showing childrens coffins.
Yes that is correct. The Sing campaign is directed at preventing vertical transmission. The actual single dose anti-retroviral costs around 4$, and has been shown, moreso in non-breastfeeding populations to significantly reduce the likelihood of the infant becoming infected. Such transmission is nearly non-existent in industrialized countries due to access to ARV regimes given during preg, labour and postpartum.Further, cultural barriers and blame placed on women prevent access to care.
The little coffins...how heartbreaking. Thank you for making this part of the HIV tragedy available to us. I doubt anyone else would film it. How can it now touch our hearts.
Annie - What a powerful campaign you are SINGing. This supermarket should give out FOR FREE - simple educational material - to prevent the need to BUY these coffins.
Very, Very Sad!!! Something has to be done, these people need help. They also have to be taught birth control methods "Condoms" to help stop the spread of HIV, and control the number of infected births etc.
