I just found another bio by Ronald Bergan called Anthony Perkins: A Haunted Life. Has a very Psycho-looking pic on the cover. Why not something from Friendly Persuasion or even Mahogany?? I look forward to it however as an alternate to the Winecoff bio, which I think was extremely unfair. Too bad, because he literally interviewed hundreds of people and really did his homework, but the conclusions he came to were bafflingly negative. Why write about him, then? A thwarted crush?
I've looked at this one several times. Charles WInecoff just massacred it in his bio of Perkins, Split Image. Try listening to it without the visuals, and the only part that is weak are are the strained high notes. I will bet that he was no worse than most of the performers recapping songs from 20 years ago. But I think I have put my finger on the real problem. In long shot, he's fine, and this is the way he appeared on-stage. It was never meant to be seen with a camera shoved down his throat.
@ferociousgumby Winecoff does not have a clue - that was brilliant - his high notes were passionate and well I could go on - Even in this sureal stage set, I love looking a him, I could go on but all I can say please buy Evening Primose, new out there, and see him creating another musical theatre (really TV ) Role.
For the life of me I don't understand what people are being critical of here. You have a man who only sang live in front of the public in one production, which took place years before this performance, and he came back in his middle age and sang a very vocally demanding, rangey song, on key. I was personally impressed, and now wish that he had performed Bobby in Company at least a few times so we would have had a record.
I think he made the mistake of being coached for this. His original singing voice was great, very straightforward and unmannered. Here he is trying to be "good". Plus this is NOT the kind of thing he should be singing! I love Friendly Persuasion besf of all.
perkins looks very angry (1:37) or half stoned. everytime he says the word "dead," his eyes take on a scary look. and the lyrics are quite ironic, given perkins' homosexuality. if you read charles winecoff's bio of perkins ("split image"), you will see that perkins had a bad time with this musical.
Every man should age as well, yet live longer. I didn't know he ever sang a note until a couple of years ago, when I stumbled upon something from another youtube post -- Evening Primrose. It was kind of jaw-dropping to discover he had a Broadway background.
Guys, u don't get it - this is a show from 1960 that is being presented as a little clip of the show but this is from late 80's/early 90's. Look at Tom Bosley - he's presenting this and it's on the same show, it's not like he's saying - "here's a clip from 30 years ago" - it's here's a show from 30 years ago being sung now with an original cast member.
Well said! The viewer must keep in mind the late great Mr Perkins was MUCH younger, stronger & more vibrant when he appeared in the original Broadway version of "Greenwillow".
I saw this show in Philadelphia when I was 14 years old and feel in love with it. The music is exceptional but you never hear anything about it. Too bad.
You go, Norman.

He is just beautiful! If this is his worst performance, as Winecoff says, then he is a genius and very, very touching.

Well technically he only performed in a musical once, but we shouldn't forget the TV musical of Sondheim's that Tony was in!

Mr Pathenews: Perkins was not 28 when he sang this song, this clip was recorded in the 80-90's, he was more on his 40s then.
He might have been that age when he did Greenwillows on Broadway

damn he is beautiful!!!! wow what a voice

I'd like to know how old Perkins is here. He looks awfully young. Was this pre or post Psycho?

very post.

This was probably done in the 80's or early 90's and Psycho opened in 1960. Do your maths.

you need to view psycho again. its astounding how young he looks in that film he looks old here in comparison
