This song is not about octaves, and singing ability, or chords..It's about a FEELING. Watch the one that is titled "WIllie Nelson - 1997 - Funny How Time Slips Away." You can FEEL what he's playing and singing.
A Willie Nelson masterpiece... sung as he wrote it, it spans two and a half octaves. It takes a singer of considerable range to cut it... Matthews is not such a singer.
@tuxguys Hmmm.... I would not call this piece a particularly demanding song to sing. I mean, I love Willie... but I don't think of him as having a very wide vocal range. And two and a half octaves? I'm checking it now and I get A to Csharp... an octave and a third - 16 semitones.. That's the original version. Unless you are somehow saying that from A to the next A up is "spanning two octaves" plus a third?
Willie himself didn't sing it the way he wrote it. Check out the biggest hit version of it from the early '60's by Jimmy Elledge, the '70's remake by Narvel Felts, or an r'n'b version I've only recently been introduced to, performed by a guy named Hinton. They all nail it. Matthews does not.
(In fairness, neither Elvis nor George Jones, nor Tom Jones for that matter, did, either.)
@tuxguys Well you got me curious now, but unfortunately Elledge's versions are all blocked for me here in Germany. So are you saying Elledge is the only one true to the song "as written"? Where do you have that factoid from? I would think Tom Jones for example wouldn't back down from any notes. Are you sure Elledge wasn't just improvising something?
PS - I'm not a big fan of Matthews. Actually, that is being kind. I am just covering the song and wanted to hear some different versions.
The thing about DMB is there is a song for everybody. If your saying nope thats not true then you havent heard all their songs. For real DMB fans It's not what is your favorite song of DMB but what is your favorite version because real DMB fans like almost all of his songs and if this isnt true then your not a real fan.
As a Dave fan since 1995, I personally dont know what to think of a person who would claim to be a Dave fan but know nothing of Willie Nelson's music. Dave has done tons of Willie covers and has always mentioned Willie's music. Heck they have even recorded together and toured together. I saw them together in Memphis and it was an awesome show. One of the best I have ever seen. You cannot be a true Dave fan and not know these things. We like to call those people "MTV DMB Tagalong".
@jwgray10 who cares? Im ok with anyone who appreciates Dave/Dave&Tim/DMB, even if they only know and like Dave's popular radio hits. At least they're not one of these douches that says Dave sucks!
@jwgray10 you dont know what to think? Good Lord your a DMB snob and what makes being part of the dmb family unlikeable. We can all can be BIG Fans and have a life. Peace
@UnderSquare Well I usually dont get to reply to these cause I have been out of the country and too busy but yeah 1995 is about right. Considering I was living in Manaus, Brazil from 1993-95 on a Conservation Work Study Program, I'd say '95 is about right. Plus I didnt mean to offend anybody. I was just joking around. Dave's music speaks to us all. Whether you are a radio fan or a touring fan, DMB has a special message for us all to be free and making the most out of life.
@jwgray10 clearly people have to know every single fact about a band or artist's history before they can claim to be a fan...because liking their music simply isn't enough
@jwgray10 reguardless, anyone can be a fan if they like the music. who gave you the right to say whose a true fan if you obviously dont like a favorite band of yours having such a wide following.
@iKaHDoosH DMB is a great band. I love their music too. But perhaps you should get to know the greatest american songwriter Willie Nelson, its worth it. There are so few originals left.
well i actually was aware of that... i even prefer this to the willie nelson version too. i really don't like the elvis version very much though. watching the willie nelson version you can see willie's really good on guitar though...
I do not think that you evoke the manners of your generation. Cordial disagreements are part of a social discourse. I am sure your parents do not condone your derisiveness.
