It's wrong that the LHC shutdown for CHRISTmas. Part of the LHC's mission is to explore the big bang and possibly destroy the idea of God I'd hope. It just wasn't good taste nor fitting to shutdown a potentially God ending machine in the name of Christ. I hope it's able to sucessfully start back up again in those very cold temperatures or Christians might claim it's a act of God to stop it.

There will not be a new weapon developed using the technology behind the LHC. We already have other particle accelerators in use and they cannot be used as weapons. The LHC is simply the biggest and best one to date. CERN is not trying to destroy the world or disprove God's existence. They are simply trying to learn more about how the universe works. The LHC's purpose is to recreate conditions similar to a few microseconds after the big bang. So that we can better understand how and why matter and the universe behave the way they do, and chiefly to discovered what dark matter is. That being said YES it could make a black hole NO it wouldn't end the world. You could stand next to it and not even know because it would be micro-microscopic.

Yes, nuclear reactors have a very small chance of damaging our environment. The reason we use them is to replace coal powered generators that have a 100% chance of damaging our environment. There is always risk in everything we do. The important thing is to choose persuits that offer the greatest reward for a minimal risk. Its unfortunate that people have to blow things out of proportion just to have a sensational story.

The LHC's purpose is to recreate conditions similar to a few microseconds after the big bang. So that we can better understand how and why matter and the universe behave the way they do, and chiefly to discovered what dark matter is. That being said YES it could make a black hole NO it wouldn't end the world. You could stand next to it and not even know because it would be micro-microscopic.
As to all these people claiming it is going to end the world, you are simply wrong.
