  • Good rendition, poor recording....

  • ONE thing is for sure they are stuck with each other ed and dave .never been a better singer for the band its the chemistry.if they could just be a band not an individual they are wonderful together.dave seemed to always push eds playing to new realms but keep him in a more pentatonic straight balls to the wall pure rock style.listen to the first 4 vh albums

  • Holy crap...I would rather listen to the Cheryl Crow cover of this song than this

  • what sux is the sound

  • what suckedthat intro

    u do better

  • that...actually kinda sucked. very dissappointing...

  • not too bad until 2:10....then it all falls apart

  • When ya think about it, the guitar riff heavy nature of the song and the harmonizing, the song lends itself to a good VH cover. I'm sure they could have nailed an album quality cover if they cared to.

  • no gimmicks just raw rock

  • coo rendition. great pix. but was sad to see James Caan get it with the cannon.

  • Not good !!

  • Great cover of a great song by a great hungry band.

  • this sucks.

    bailed at 1:04

  • so raw, the drummer is sounding real john bonhamish

  • "Van Halen was California not England", well the Van Halen brothers are dutch from the beginning...

  • So... it its true..

Van Halen CAN suck at music. This video is the only proof you'll ever find though.

  • sounds like shit. don't drink booze or do drugs. take showers or baths. be clean and respect life.

  • Here that beat zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzz JOE you the man!!!!!!!!

  • sloppy

  • pretty lame

  • Those are some great pictures of the band

  • eddie is the best

  • Diamond Dave butchers this as usual. How many ways can we say shite????

  • ugh

  • lol @ drunk eddie trying to hang with god of guitar joe walsh.......MUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • Dave sucked on that one but Eddie had a few cool twists on it. I just wish he did it with Joe Walsh.

  • If you like Eddie search for Dweezil Zappa playing Eruption . He tells a Great EVH story . and plays Eruption .

  • I like it more than the original, big fan of Walsh.

Anything ED and David touch turns to gold

  • Damn, they played the fuck out of that song!

  • Think it's time for VAN HALEN THE MOVIE! Get on it Hollywood!

  • EEEK! Only Joe can sing it right,or play t his. Some songs just shouldnt be covered,..only my humble opinion.

  • holly sweet fu@#k that singer could fuck up a wet dream .

  • just terrible!!!!

  • This is actually a terrible cover of a great song.. Geers to vanhalen for this one...

  • WOW...Have NEVER heard this before. Far out...

  • Gee

Thanks for letting your ego hair get in the way of a great song

  • Their cover of the song isn't bad , but the audio on the vocals is.

  • Do you Have the cover of aerosmith song Walk this Way?

  • Bad cover on this great song.

  • I liked it, sort of true to the original in the best parts of the song with a harder edge (if that's possible). Great song either way.

  • One day...the FILM footage of VAN HALEN playing in Anaheim Stadium In California will surface, the concert when SAMMY HAGAR was the opening act, Then VAN HALEN, Then BLACK SABBATH, and the Headliner was BOSTON....

When THAT footage surfaces, THEN you will REEALLY See something special !

  • @mikenobeardthepirate what year was that concert?

  • I have to agree halen doesn't do anythin for the song and sheryl crow's cover was better

  • @dictator54 Remember though, he was just getting started back in those days.

  • Surely the worst thing I ever heard of Van Halen. The voice sounds like a telephone handset and the guitar an insult to Joe Walsh...terribly bad!

  • All I can say is thanks. A great service to us all. Thanks again.

  • Be nice if Roth the Jew boy got the lyrics correct.Too many fucking notes by Eddie as usual. This is the pussy California gay version of the original

  • @70goldtop Try Sheryl Crow's version- Much nicer !! - She's lovely !!

  • Thanks for posting!

  • Wow, if Van Halen ever records a new album, they could include a modern version of this James Gang classic and do for Walk Away what they did for You Really Got Me back in '78

  • they came a long way, this was a train wreck, lol

  • @CletusColtrane it was Dave lol

  • Not my favorite VH cover. The pics were great though. I remember a day when I thought Eddie could do no wrong and every note he played was perfect. I wasted a lot of time listening to VH records when I should have listened to Steve Morse, Danny Gatton, and Larry Carlton. I later realized that about 75% of VH music was noise. I was young and naive, but hey I loved it.

  • 1:10 Sorry. I like Van Halen, but that is one of the gayest looking outfits i've ever seen.

  • All ears here

  • Kickass. Had no idea this existed.

  • @glaetze: Loved the slide show...especially the Van Halen family foto!!!!!!!!! I never knew their father worked in the Methodist Healthcare System. I have recovered many times in our local Methodist in San Antonio. It is the most loving setting I know...staffed with angels of mercy.

  • Wow, I NEVER KNEW VH DID THIS!! How cool, good job Dave on singing Joe

    Walsh's song.

  • This shit is an awesome piece of history.

  • hell of a cover. Van Halen and James Gang are both great

  • The picture at 1:47 with mom and dad was touching. The looks on Eddie and Alex appear so child-like, at the moment. The Van Halens had humble beginnings in America, when they immigrated to Pasadena, California, from Holland.

Eddie and Alex's father walked miles to and from their home, in order to work as a dish washer, at Arcadia Methodist Hospital.

This goes to show you how an American dream can be accomplished. It almost makes me cry.

    Kudos to the Van Halens!

  • Movie posters are laughable. I bought a CD of compiled covers, not all complete, sadly

  • Fail

  • The Gary Cherone Van Halen III cover is priceless.

  • looks pretty gay to me now....not like 30 yrs ago.

  • Thanks a lot for posting this. I love the "Roth Man" poster. Did you make that one?

  • Van Halen was without a doubt an Excellent band especially when dave was singing but his ego is what led him down from stardom. A legend in his own mind. Sorry Dave, but Eddie proved that they can and did move on without you.

  • @abashal Dave likely felt that's what you need to be the lead singer, and person in control, as he is doing solo, etc. He's just not naturally a great singer, though he has a good voice, so we enjoy it regardless

  • VH had it on lockdown back in the day. Even the covers they made their own.

  • Looks like a lot I saw from the ol Circus mag......

  • @ch8ch I still have most all of My Circus, one or two Hit Parader, but I love this old vintage shots, they capture the band in time. David was never a strong vocalist but he can still sing in key at times, and he's more a showman then musician

  • @MetallicBill

Wow thats great....Im terrible at saving stuff....except junk lol

  • Just watched Joe's original version and this one pales in comparison..sorry because I really do like VH

  • I love van halen so much but I like joe walsh's version wayyyyyyyyy better. This is still pretty good though

  • Are triplets the only riff Alex knows how to do?

  • Cool...but no match for the James Gang version.

  • Joe Walsh is the coolest dude that ever lived.

  • "Roth Man".............Hahahahahahahahahahahah!!!!!!

Diamond Dave must've come out of the womb dancing and singing.

  • wow, alittle low on the pitch dont you think?

  • All the negative comments just prove one thing....THE WORLD IS FULL OF IDIOTS!!!

  • Van Halen in there Best Day they Couldn't do this song the way Joe Of the James Gang did it. Because Eddie is Eddie and Joe is Joe! James Gang was one of the 1st Hard Rock Band they Showed the other how it is Done.......

  • Gotta love that totally MAXED tube amp sound...that thing is just growlin'. Thanks for posting

  • love the photo-shops! lmao

  • this bites!.....too busy sounding for a song that was simple straight ahead rock. And Diamond Dave doesn't have that vocal range of Joe.

  • @Skinhitta WTF U TALKIN BOUT WILLIS???

  • One of my fave bands ever - but look at 2.40 - is that Dave Lee Roth or Jim Dandy!!??

  • sucks

  • Fascinating historical artifact. It would be interesting if you included some information about when and where this was recorded. You have so much pre-Warner' s VH stuff up I'm guessing that you where an early fan? If so that would also be cool to include in the info section. Either way thanks for posting.

  • @hanksteelbranch I'm pretty sure this is at the Whisky in '77, or the Pasedena Civic Center on New Years Eve '76-'77. I had a guitarist with lots of bootleg VH stuff, I remember hearing this, but don't remember the specifics. They were doing "House of Pain" back then, too.

  • @flugplatz21 It's actually Gazzari's 1974

  • @kfyten Cool. My old friend had all kinds of old stuff, it's been years, so I forgot some times and places. I wish Gazzari's was still standing, it seemed like VH's main club back then. Really '74, though? This must be real early stuff then. Thanks, and take care!

  • Like that !

  • Always wondered what a song with Joe Walsh and Eddie Van Halen would sound like, both playing guitar of course.

  • ROTH MAN LOL!!!!!

  • AWESOME!

  • This is insane!

I only wish some of the vocals were easier to hear.

  • I really like this!

  • no one touches the legendary joe walsh, not even eddie and dave, sorry

  • @rome108 daves vocals are and always have been weak.

  • You speak the TRUTH !!!!!

  • @rome108 Pardon me, but you must have your head up your ass, because you certainly can't hear how Eddie and Alex were playing circles around the original version! (and that's hard to to do, as the original was great!)

  • @rome108 i think they just did. End of Discussion

  • @rome108

+1 This sounds like rubbish compared to the James Gang.

Van Halen butchered The Whos` Won`t get fooled again also.

  • rothman

  • There are some cool things about this version for sure.

  • To the guy who posted this...thanks! In my opinion this is priceless. I have watched it about 10 times now and it really reminds me of a day when the greatest heavy "American" band walked the earth. Yes Black Sabbath, Priest , Maiden and the like were among the greatest bands on Earth but Van Halen was California not England. Great addition to this site. Fantastic addition. Thanks again.

  • No problem

  • @vhfanjack And 5 more stars

    Amazing, rare post !

  • Agreed never heard this version before 5 plus stars thx for this post

  • @jehennem I love the Rothman picture.. He really was a asshole in his day.

  • @tmpc45 And still is!

  • @felipeandjason Yep, You'll get no argument from me.. The new song Tattoo sounds much better without the video! When they come to Denver may 24th 2012 I'll be there for one reason.. Eddie!

  • Yeah this is BRUTAL compared to the various versions Walsh put out.

  • I agree with SkizMaroo!!!! If your a great musician or band you keep making new music not reunion tours!!! That's a job for KISS!!! Sammy keeps working and writing. I know some people hate Sammy but at 63 he's still rock'in!!! Chickenfoot ROCKS!!!!

  • @redhead5150 the only song ive ever heard by chickenfoot was 'oh yeah'. and to tell you the truth the radio overplayed the shit out of them i got so sick of hearing it so quickly ya know?

  • I can play it better than this.

  • What gives you the right, the guys who screw around in their bedrooms with their guitars,(attempting)to play classics like this one, to say that Van Halen shouldnt have covered this song, whilst you are doing it aswell...kind of hypocritical, dontcha think?

  • Yeah, I don't know what everybody's talking about. Sure, it's not the original- but it's alright. A cover is a cover. I'm sure they weren't thinking about composition or production quality beyond that one night. It's a little sloppy, but they were probably a little tipsy, and the people there listening were probably equally inebriated, if not more-so. The drums & solo work on this rock, actually.

  • Holy shit, thanks for posting this. Never heard this before.

  • This isn't all THAT bad!! Christ, by what people were writing, I thought it would be practically unlistenable--solo is a little bit much, but what do you want, it's VH!

Now what IS wrong is that yellow guitar to Eddy's right at 2:20... don't think that one made into the arena gigs.

  • Dave looks like a Drag Queen

  • As a long time VH fan I can say, without reservation, that the "reunion" tour sucked balls. I saw it in 2 venues in the ATL and, well, it sucked balls.

As much as I love EVH he has finally shot himself in the foot. Now hes got no Dave...hes got no Sammy.... he aint even got himself any Gary.

    VH is done.

    Breaks my heart.........

  • i love van halen. hell... eddie van halen is one of my heros but they should stay away from this song. this song is gold and they seriously trashed it...

  • Great stuff! James Gang w/Joe Walsh was fucken KICKASS!!

  • what the fuck is this!!!!!! sounds like a piss poor drunk session hopefully this crap only goes this far

  • Sorry, i love VH, but this blows, no way around it..

  • This is actually a cover of the "Walk Away" from the James Gang "Live" album. And it's not bad.

  • This is terrible. I stopped it at 1:49. Worst 1:49 of my life. I have heard far better from bar bands. The pictures were lame.

  • Read my lips, JOE WALSH OWNS this song. And Van Halen destroyed. They can't even cover a song, but I am a VH DLR fan from the first "vinyle" album. They were bad. Joe Walsh still kicks ass, VH has lost it. Joe Walsh is amazing.

  • Read my lips, Joe Walsh

    WROTE

    this song.

  • Well, Joe Walsh's version is better, and this definatley ain't their best, but you went a little far. This is from their club days. They got better year after year. I saw them on the reunion tour with Roth, and they were incredible. I also saw The Eagles last year, and they were incredible! Van Halen rocks, and so does Joe Walsh! This version doesn't stand a chance against the original, but this was BEFORE they became bigger and better!

  • Terrible version of the song, but some amazing pictures!

  • Jimmie Vox can drum circles around Alex VanHalen.

  • What's with you stupid fuckers comparing musicians!? Nobody cares!

  • They just like to compare yellow to brown it's like nothing to compare.

Either 1. get some instruments and play

    or 2. STFU

  • Yup

  • eucutta, no worries, anyone 40+ that rocks listens, or has listened to mucho VH. they were it.

  • VH will never not be the shit

  • Fuckin great pictures!

  • Thanks, took my a while to get all of them, lol

  • @ch8ch Some of the pictures used are available at 80srockphotos by David Plastik

  • Is he singing this through a loud hailer.

  • My friend, a brilliant quality audio.. I saw Van Halen in London '79 ,'80 , and at Monsters of rock in England in 1984 and they seriously kicked my bits and pieces every time...what memories... Nice one...Ta..!

  • oh, i think i have that 1980 show lying around somewhere! They really tore it up then...

The most myserious tour, and possibly the best....the 1980 invasion

  • No doubt... Not much on youtube from the Van Halen 1980 Invasion tour.I have a boot from Landover,Maryland on CD from 1980,& one from the Fair Warning Tour.If you would like to trade me a copy of that tour for mine, that would be great!

  • Dude, dw about trading, send us your email via message, and ill email them to you for free, no trading, no nothing

  • Hey gfrkiss. I was happy to read your comments here. I've always been very interested in how folks from the UK viewed Van Halen. Did they headline in 1980 when you saw them, or were they opening for someone? I don't think they toured Europe much after 1980—just a few shows here and there. I know it's hard to answer, but just how popular were Van Halen in England in the early '80s? I know Van Halen I and 1984 sold well there, but I often wonder how much folks listened to other early stuff.

  • great pix-VH rocks

  • thanks man, and amen, lol

  • I saw VH with DLR last year in Hershey-they were ON! DLR is one of the greatest front men of all time..others:Robert Plant, Bob Pollard, Jon Spencer, Elvis

  • man, i would give my left nut to see them live

  • Because i'm posting the music for fans to listen to. It's not my fault that you have a problem with still photos. Why watch the video if you don't appreciate the music?

  • What are you, a retard?! This is historic Van F**king Halen!!! Open your ears. If he had the video to accompany it don't you think he'd post it? Besides, a lot of these pictures are either classic or pretty damn amusing. Thank you for sharing, vhfanjack.

  • thanks for watching

  • Van Halen is always great till Dave opens his mouth.

    Where's Sammy?

  • Drinking Tequila...How can you not like Dave? Van Halen with Dave is timeless, but Van Hagar is boring...Your call though...

  • I agree about the Van Hagar- the newbies don't understand because our first listening experience was with DLR. It's the same with ACDC- I despise Brian Johnson. He sounds like an old fart bag. Bon was the man and angus misses him dearly. Hagar was great with Montrose, Bad Motor Scooter etc. My Call, though.

  • This Is Not As Good ,As I thought It Would Be

  • At 2:55 who is the African American gentleman playing the drums LOL!

  • Sucks

  • love the cover and loved the james gang

ahhh..the good ol days of real rock n roll

  • You just know Dave loves to take it up the ass.

What a fag. Joe Walsh should beat the shit out of him.

  • fag or not he is more famous and did alot to shape music in the future!!!!!your whats wrong with this country!!!!1

  • daves goot some sweet kicks at 1:10

  • ehhhh

  • Some people just don't get it. This a really cool jam/cover meant for a club crowd, and not for any kind of release. We're lucky to get to hear this stuff over 30 years later and enjoy what they did from the beginning. Anyone that wants to compare this stuff to the original artist or studio recording should be riding the short bus.

  • Well said... just enjoy it for what it is. To me (despite the bad recording) it's a great version and not that bad at all. Plus anytime ya get to hear Ed's playing during these times is just a bonus.

  • Very kewl...neat cover. FYI to the bone heads. This is a club take....way back when...prolly. Are people this dense, not to understand this. Cool pics...thx.

  • keywords "club days"

    dummies

  • Not impressed by this at all. They did better versions of other cover songs, but this one more or less sucks a big ol' purple pickle.

  • Great pictures, anyway. Thanks for sharing.

  • Sucks. Van Halen certainly had an illustrious career, and Recorded a ton of Great stuff, but........here, simply fell flat. this is nothing more than a Shitty sounding, sloppy club band version, Mucking thru an otherwise,

Great Song. I'll take Joe's Version anyday.

    Halen is Dead.

  • I'm sure the song wouldn't sound nearly as crappy with a much better sounding recording.

  • thanks for posting this jack, i love it!

all you negative comment dudes, never understood what rock and roll is! it's rock and roll! it's not polished licks, and perfection, it's rock and roll! long live rock.....and lighten up a bit all you negative comment gays, i mean guys.

  • yeah, i know, i dont see whats so bad about this performance

  • no they didnt, they made their own version of it....

  • They ruined it!

  • they changed it
