The kirpan is not an offensive weapon in ancient times sikhs carried defensive arms when being attacked as well as victims of genocide in india. If we stop all forms of blades, should we stop builders from carrying tools, or barbers/tailors/butchers/chefs/scissors/protractors/sharp pencils/razor blades in our society. In criminal law there are 2 things the intention to commit the crime and the crime itself with evidence. Why? due to intentions such as mental instability + environment factors
My friends have some respect for others beliefs, many sikhs wear very modern clothing as well as brand names. In regards to turbans and beards they are not uncommon to western civilisation, it is these articles of faith that was in place for sikhs to fight in ww1 and ww2. Our issue about the kirpan is that some people believe banning all what they might consider as knifes will stop knife crime.
@snowstormcan Religion creeps in through different ways. Saudi Arabia is spending millions on suppling books to our schools. These books have a different history in them. They also give tons of money to our universities and fund courses, all with the aim of pushing the islamic agenda forward. They even have prayer rooms in our public schools, a place where we thought religion was banned, guess not if it is islam.
the kirpan is an irrelevant in its original form. it's a dagger. we needed it historically to protect the vulnerable. now people are utilizing it to attack individuals, IE the brampton gurdwara. despite the isolated event, i cant say I 100% trust every sikh to be responsible with what is on their person. I completely understand why we want to represent that we are sikh-but we don't need to carry a dagger anymore. Items such as lapels as used for airline flights could be used instead.
That's great and all but I would think it would be dangerous to allow someone with basically a weapon to walk around in public and government buildings. Most people with a Kipran don't have bad intentions but other people can take advantage of this leniency with obvious dangerous outcomes..
How small can a Kirpan be?If it is small and dull and only ceremonial I don't see an issue, but if it must have a blade that could be of risk to another person than I'm not comfortable with it.There have been cases of Kirpans being used in anger in Temple..(Gudwhara,sic)...I know it is extremely rare for this to happen...Anyway good luck in your run for parliament.
Why is Olivia Chow on her phone? I love the NDP and am planning to vote for the NDP candidate in my constituency (Willowdale) but Chow isn't giving off a good impression of them at the moment.

Religion and government do not go together, all signs of religion should be banned from the house.
