  • Shouldn't it be Hawking supports Kubrick's hostile alien theory?

  • Someone has clearly never seen the movie or read the books.

  • @giggletronics How elitist of you to say that you read the book. I admire your modesty. Please be friends with me.

  • EEEEeeeeEEEeeeeeeeeeeeEEEEEEEeeeeeeeEEEEEEEEEE

  • Yeah because nothing says hostile like imbuing prehumans with intelligence allowing us to attain technological mastery over our world.

AND THEN they have the gall to elevate one of us to Godhood to aid in another race's rise to sentience.

    Those aliens are DICKS!

  • The reason the signal went out at that time was that the sunlight had touched it for the first time since the monolith had been uncovered, which was a sign to it that humans had made it to their moon.

  • If they played some Michael Jackson, this would make more sense.

  • Country music sucks balls.

  • Hostility is not the same as insensitivity or indifference to harm. What the human perceives as a harmful result of contact, the alien may not perceive as harmful or important, or may not perceive it at all.

In this scene intent to cause immediate harm would be illogical, since the alien had previously intervened in human evolution to provoke aggressive development that would bring humans here, and in this moment it is luring humans to Jupiter where it will take further steps.

  • I don't think the monolith was intended to appear hostile in this scene. It was blasting a signal at the monolith orbiting jupiter. Given that the signal had to go 12 light hours, it had to be powerful. The signal just was picked up by the astronaut's radios. Given the nature of the aliens in other Arthur C. Clarke stories and the depiction of the monolith in the first scene as a bringer of knowledge, i think your video is mis-titled.

  • @doppleganger3 At first I was in agreement, but I let it go to the end... And now I completely agree with the poster of the video :D

  • @doppleganger3: Agreed. It's explicitly stated in the books that the purpose for the monolith's presence is to act as a gauge of humanity's evolution. When humanity reached the necessary degree of intelligence and technology to discover and unearth the monolith on the moon, it then made its transmission to Jupiter both to draw a human there to be turned into a star child, to trigger the implosion of Jupiter to create Lucifer, and to transmit its findings back to its creators.
