Raccoons are absolutely wonderful, social animals. I have had a great deal of experience with raccoons; up close and personal. So long as they have enough food to share amongst themselves, they are really playful, mischievous and fun loving animals. They simply adore looking in on the human world, through windows and they would enter your home, if you let them! I imagine that there will come a time when raccoons are common suburban house pets, maybe within decades. S! MJ

Raccoons are indeed wild animals--but I'm not sure THEY know that. I live in the Sierra Nevada, and we get raccoons (with babies) who not only hang out on our deck, but like to come inside and take naps in the hallways, thoughtfully pat our feet, and curl up on the sofa when we're sitting in the next chair over.

I work in the field of wildlife biology, so my statements are based on my experience in the field. In the early stages of disease, animals may not have visible symptoms. Feline/canine distemper take 10-14 days to show symptoms. Rabies can take months. Most veterinarians don't offer vaccines. There is a reason a majority of states do not allow wild animals as pets. It is a health risk, and having wild animals taken out of their natural habitat to be kept as pets is not a good thing.

He's absolutely adorable...but from a health and safety (and legal) standpoint, he should not be kept as a pet. First of all, the incidence of genuinely 'orphaned' animals is not as common as one would expect. Just because they're alone doesn't mean they're orphaned. Mother is most likely in the vicinity, and many well-meaning people who try to adopt baby animals often cause more damage than if they left it alone. Dependence on humans is, in the long run, detrimental to an animal's survival.
