One interesting episode is how some native soldiers defected to the rebel forces and during this one battle they marched up to the Spanish forces shouting in Spanish that they were friends - the Spanish lowered their rifles and the native troops fired on them! So yea, it was pretty darn confusing. I think that basically the Filipinos in the 1st phase would have been more irregular in dress, while the Spaniards would have standardized uniforms and equipment.
Yup, pretty much. Well in the first phase you had Evangelista who was trained as a military engineer and then you had the local governors like Aguinaldo who would have at least experience handling provincial militia units and police to fight tulisanes. Then in the 2nd phase you had Luna, MANY ex-Spanish army officers including, as you mentioned, ex-Guardia Civil Sityar (who was among those who fought the first battle at Pinaglabanan - on the Spanish side!) so the quality was a bit higher.
I'm just wondering why they used Filipinos instead of foreigners to play the part of the Spanish Army. Baron Geisler, Carlos Palanca and Ryan Eigenman still looks Filipino despite being mestizos.
In another film epic "Rizal", they used a lot of foreigners to make the Spanish Army more foreign looking!
on your 2nd question... the soldiers in white were US Navy sailors under Lt.James Gilmore of the USS Yorktown. A minor quibble would be that they should have been - and historically were - accompanied by a detachment of US Marines such as in the film THE WIND AND THE LION - see if you can find the video MARINES UNLEASHED IN TANGIERS - PART TWO if you want to see how that looks like.
Having watched this movie, It enriches peoples knowledge about our roots and history and at the same time promoting tourism in our country. Well Done and Congratulations Sir Mark Meily! :-)
Finally, a film that paints a clearer picture of the Filipino revolution. In that war, the Filipino army had cannons and uniforms. They even had machine guns. The Filipino revolution was a revolution of the Ilustrados!
I have a few questions though:
1. Did the Spanish Army have the same uniform as the Filipino Army? The uniforms of the two armies looked very identical.
2. Who were the soldiers in white? Were they Americans?
Hi there, a few quick answers are in order... but first, you'll be pleased to know that this is one of the productions local or Hollywood, which does take care of and respect history! My salutes to Dir.Mark Meilly for not making this a Pearl Harbor but more of a Titanic!
1. The Spanish colonial army uniform was the RAYADILLO, the mid/light blue stripes on white which we automatically think of nowadays as Pinoy. The rayadillo was worn by native soldiers in the Spanish army (such as the 70th Regimento de Magallanes, which shot Rizal on Dec.30, 1896) and the Spanish 'expeditionary rifle battalions' or Cazadores, elite light infantry sharpshooters such as the detachment of the 2nd Cazadores portrayed here.
Thanx for the answers. So how did the two sides differentiate each other? By mere means of flags?
I also agree how in the film, the Filipino army used military commands in Spanish such as "Fuego". Being a new army, I'm sure we modeled its structure on our former colonizers.
Well if you noticed in the Cazadores' hats they had the little yellow and red cockade - Pinoys would wear red and blue or red, white and blue ones and have the red shoulder ranks while Spaniards wore their ranks on their cuffs.
Actually A LOT of Pinoys served in the Spanish army including Guardia Civil and Regimentos Fijos (fixed Regts) so there would be pinoys w/ mil.experience. There actually weren't that many Spanish soldiers in the country till AFTER the revolution began.
The soldiers there were a detachment of one of the Spanish Expeditionary Rifle detachments - Cazadores, elite light infantry who were very skilled sharpshooters. Compared to them, the Filipinos hardly had any marksmanship training and sometimes removed the rear sights of their rifles because it 'interfered with their view' so of course their fire was wildly inaccurate.
Actually they're not necessarily Macabebe's though it makes sense that they're kapampangan as a lot of native soldiers were recruited from there. Natives/Indios served all throughout the Spanish colonial army - in fact it was Pinoys under Spanish command which were keeping all the rest of the Pinoys under Spanish rule.
i watched the premiere night of baler ang sarap ulit-ulitin. it's worth paying for... i'm proud that we can produce a world-class film like this in fairness sa budget ha.
paanu naman kami makakapanood ng iskul bukol mukhang hindi naman yan showing d2 sa states. At saka if ever man, why would i waste my time watching a movie for senior citizel like the casts! heheh. If I were 60 years old maybe but I have a feeling that iskul bukol ay pag pe fiestahan ng nga langaw sa sinehan sa pinas hehehe
hello... d naman kya yan maxadong 2ngql sa history!! mas romance kaya.... based on a true story yan, 'no.. atsaka hindi naman yan isang educational film... bakit niyo kinukumpara sa LOS ULTIMOS DE FILIPINAS na yan??? ano ba nman....
All I'm hoping for is a good story that will entertain while taking into account historical factors - letting the history AFFECT the narrative like Cameron did in Titanic. I don't want some long boring docudrama like Abaya's Rizal (ugh!) which played too much like a badly written grade 6 textbook but something that challenges us to experience history and learn from it while being entertained. Hopefully this film will be the latter.
wag naman sanang sayangin ang pagkaka-exploit ng Baler...napaka ganda ng lugar pero ung story is the same as what what u can tell the ending is...anyhow salamat for putting Baler in the Silver Screen..
comment ko lANG SA MGA NAGSASABI NA dapat raw kung baler and title sa baler din ang kuha. ok laNG NAMaN kung hindi kuha sa original setting ng story where the movie was based. in fact MOST historical films are filmed on a different location: for example, the passion of the christ was shot in italy, great raid in australia, even the dark knight was shot in Canada. i think it is because of cinematography. as long as kAhawig ng story's setting, that is fine.
Romance isn't too bad but I really wonder why they can't just tell the story straight like in Zulu, A Bridge Too Far or The Alamo, without the romance. I'm worrying that the romance will detract from the film rather than help it. I'm not asking for a historical documentary but there are a good number of films which can tell a story without mush and still be great.
Did you even read what I wrote? I'm not against historical romances - I happen to love more than a few of them: Titanic, English Patient, Casablanca, From Here to Eternity, Dark Blue World, etc. What I don't want to see happen is a movie like Nouvelle France/aka Battle of the Brave or Pearl Harbor which pay lip service to history but are really just generic costumed love stories.
Baler is a place.. the Capital of Aurora Province.. it is situated in Region 3.. the story happens in that place.. the church plays a significant role in the story..
plus. if im not mistaken my prof said that one of the songs that was played was a soundtrack in one of robert de niro's films. think it was the missionary.
hay hay... isang hollywood film sa isang filipino film. ang traces ng titanic at pearl harbor ay kitang kita. sila din naman nagsabi pati na mala TITANIC daw ito - using the backdrop of a real event tas isasaksak ang isang love story na hindi naman talaga nagexist. can they make something unique? something truly pinoy? pati poster kopyado kung san. isa sa na naman sa madaming filipinized hollywood films... sad
I don't think that's necessarily bad as long as its more Titanic than Pearl Harbor. PH is a BAD historical movie because history is just the excuse for the romance. It doesn't teach you crap about what the PH attack was, the history behind it etc. At least Titanic, for all the bad dialogue, clearly situated the romance within the historical context and the history AFFECTED the characters and wasn't just pretty backdrop.
and they shud have gotten another leading lady aside from anne someone who's malay uknow someone who really looks filipina but pretty as well of course..
There were if I recall correctly, several mestizos or Filipinos (as the term was understood then - Spaniards born in the Philippines and not the 'indios' aka us!) in the ranks of Cerezo's Cazadores at Baler. Two deserted I think so I'm guessing that will be the story that they're trying to go for here.
In history, the Spanish Army was filled with Filipinos as much as the Filipino army was filled with Spaniards. The head of the Filipino military academy (Col. Sityar) was a former officer of the Spanish Army. Antonio Luna's staff was composed mostly of former Spanish officers.
If you read our history carefully, it seems that the Philippine Revolution was more like a Spanish civil war between the reactionaries (government) and the liberals (revolutionists). It was not a war between races.
What does regional history say? I'm not quite familiar with the history of the Macabebes. Although Nick Joaquin justifies their actions in his book A Question of Heroes.

Ang ganda ng movie na ito, magaling tlga c anne at echo.I hope it will make it to box office same with Ang Tanging Ina N'yong Lahat by star cinema for the MMFF Dec 2008.
Sana gawin nyo rin yung Noli Me Tangere tapos si Sarah G ang Maria Clara.. hehe just a thought. This really looks like a great movie sana marami makanood.. Bibili nalang ako ng dvd nito pag meron na coz I'm from the other side of the world.
This trailer gives me goose bumps! Bravo to the staff, crew, actors, actresses and director. This is the movie that will make me and my family go to the movie theater again for a Filipino movie. It has been a long time that the Filipino movie industry has been saturated with famous faces, but poor acting ability; mostly just with romantic "tweetums" comedy. I got teary eyed already even with just these 2 minutes of video in a small youtube box.
Batangbaler loves the trailer. Sunset or sunrise it doesn't matter.
And casting Anne Curtis as the Balerian is culturally accurate. We have beautiful girls like her here in Baler. Feliza Reyes was probably the granddaughter of a Spanish priest like my grand-grand-grand-grand father Fray Jose Urbino Esparragoza.
One major flaw in this movie: the scene where Echo and Anne kisses, the sun setting on the sea is geographically wrong. Whoever came with that idea is a dumbass! They should've checked first. The sea, in Baler or in any coastal town in Aurora, is in the east. Meaning, the sun would only pop out of it.
Good observation and knowledge of geography except that there is no sun setting in the shot you mentioned. The clouds are reflecting the afternoon sun.
ganda nito. sayang di ko mapanuod to. may mapupulot tayong aral dito. congrats sa lahat ng crew to anne curtis and echo. especially viva. congrats sa lahat.
GREAT MOVIE! can't stop watching it over and over...BEST ACTRESS FOR ANNE CURTIS,BEST ACTOR FOR JERICHO ROSALES, BEST FILM, BEST DIRECTOR FOR DIREK MEILY!!!MARAMING SALAMAT PO=D
Awesome video. I will watch this movie my whole family. Is the an international screening/ premier night in Los Angeles, CA? Congrats Anne, Echo and Derictor Mike. Kudos to the staff, crew, actors and actresses.

Actually A LOT of Pinoys served in the Spanish army including Guardia Civil and Regimentos Fijos (fixed Regts) so there would be pinoys w/ mil.experience. There actually weren't that many Spanish soldiers in the country till AFTER the revolution began.
Norrington516 3 years ago
The soldiers there were a detachment of one of the Spanish Expeditionary Rifle detachments - Cazadores, elite light infantry who were very skilled sharpshooters. Compared to them, the Filipinos hardly had any marksmanship training and sometimes removed the rear sights of their rifles because it 'interfered with their view' so of course their fire was wildly inaccurate.
Norrington516 3 years ago
Actually they're not necessarily Macabebe's though it makes sense that they're kapampangan as a lot of native soldiers were recruited from there. Natives/Indios served all throughout the Spanish colonial army - in fact it was Pinoys under Spanish command which were keeping all the rest of the Pinoys under Spanish rule.

hello... d naman kya yan maxadong 2ngql sa history!! mas romance kaya.... based on a true story yan, 'no.. atsaka hindi naman yan isang educational film... bakit niyo kinukumpara sa LOS ULTIMOS DE FILIPINAS na yan??? ano ba nman....
tabarnakkaliz 3 years ago
All I'm hoping for is a good story that will entertain while taking into account historical factors - letting the history AFFECT the narrative like Cameron did in Titanic. I don't want some long boring docudrama like Abaya's Rizal (ugh!) which played too much like a badly written grade 6 textbook but something that challenges us to experience history and learn from it while being entertained. Hopefully this film will be the latter.
Norrington516 3 years ago
agreed!
aurorascience 3 years ago

wag naman sanang sayangin ang pagkaka-exploit ng Baler...napaka ganda ng lugar pero ung story is the same as what what u can tell the ending is...anyhow salamat for putting Baler in the Silver Screen..
dino2x1 3 years ago
comment ko lANG SA MGA NAGSASABI NA dapat raw kung baler and title sa baler din ang kuha. ok laNG NAMaN kung hindi kuha sa original setting ng story where the movie was based. in fact MOST historical films are filmed on a different location: for example, the passion of the christ was shot in italy, great raid in australia, even the dark knight was shot in Canada. i think it is because of cinematography. as long as kAhawig ng story's setting, that is fine.

Norrington516 3 years ago
buh the center of the movie is not the BALER..its the LOVE story in BALER..if u dont want this.dont watch then.too easy
losbagitos 3 years ago 2
Did you even read what I wrote? I'm not against historical romances - I happen to love more than a few of them: Titanic, English Patient, Casablanca, From Here to Eternity, Dark Blue World, etc. What I don't want to see happen is a movie like Nouvelle France/aka Battle of the Brave or Pearl Harbor which pay lip service to history but are really just generic costumed love stories.

hay hay... isang hollywood film sa isang filipino film. ang traces ng titanic at pearl harbor ay kitang kita. sila din naman nagsabi pati na mala TITANIC daw ito - using the backdrop of a real event tas isasaksak ang isang love story na hindi naman talaga nagexist. can they make something unique? something truly pinoy? pati poster kopyado kung san. isa sa na naman sa madaming filipinized hollywood films... sad
kahnt 3 years ago
I don't think that's necessarily bad as long as its more Titanic than Pearl Harbor. PH is a BAD historical movie because history is just the excuse for the romance. It doesn't teach you crap about what the PH attack was, the history behind it etc. At least Titanic, for all the bad dialogue, clearly situated the romance within the historical context and the history AFFECTED the characters and wasn't just pretty backdrop.

ok i don't understanad is jericho really a spanish soldier..? he doesn't look like one to begin with
OscarLorenzoStaCruz 3 years ago
There were if I recall correctly, several mestizos or Filipinos (as the term was understood then - Spaniards born in the Philippines and not the 'indios' aka us!) in the ranks of Cerezo's Cazadores at Baler. Two deserted I think so I'm guessing that will be the story that they're trying to go for here.
Norrington516 3 years ago
they're Macabebe soldiers from Pampanga. They were HIRED to keep peace and order, not because they are pro-Spaniards.
That explains why Jericho's character here is half-Kapampangan and the other soldiers were claiming that Pampanga is there home.
sisigman 3 years ago
In history, the Spanish Army was filled with Filipinos as much as the Filipino army was filled with Spaniards. The head of the Filipino military academy (Col. Sityar) was a former officer of the Spanish Army. Antonio Luna's staff was composed mostly of former Spanish officers.
If you read our history carefully, it seems that the Philippine Revolution was more like a Spanish civil war between the reactionaries (government) and the liberals (revolutionists). It was not a war between races.
ventadamanila 3 years ago
that is if you read only Philippine history. I'm talking about regional history, which i believe you should also read about.
sisigman 3 years ago
What does regional history say? I'm not quite familiar with the history of the Macabebes. Although Nick Joaquin justifies their actions in his book A Question of Heroes.

Feliza Reyes was probably the granddaughter of a Spanish priest like my grand-grand-grand-grand father Fray Jose Urbino Esparragoza.
batangbaler 3 years ago 2
One major flaw in this movie: the scene where Echo and Anne kisses, the sun setting on the sea is geographically wrong. Whoever came with that idea is a dumbass! They should've checked first. The sea, in Baler or in any coastal town in Aurora, is in the east. Meaning, the sun would only pop out of it.
200768213 3 years ago
Good observation and knowledge of geography except that there is no sun setting in the shot you mentioned. The clouds are reflecting the afternoon sun.
markmeily 3 years ago
But is there a sea in that shot? I'm from Baler just so you know. Would I be mean to find another flaw? (Nah, I shouldn't.)
The movie still interests me nonetheless. The first history contest I won was on the history of Baler.
