Yeah, Phil didn't start playing the Alembic bass until late 73 or 74, and Jerry didn't get the Wolf guitar until the end of 74, so the earliest this can be is late 73. No way is this from the Euro 72 tour.
gypsy, thank god for people like you. i was watching this and thinkin about it myself. doug wrote that he started working on what would become "wolf" in may of 72 and didnt complete it for a year.
Yikes Europe 72' WEEEEEEEEEEO thanks where'd this come from any more do u have the whole show worth fortune Keith Donna the band ready to rise to all time history fame around when i started with the shows
First time they played Row Jimmy live was at Stanford, Feb 9 '73 ... (that was also first date for several other songs including Eyes, China Doll, Here Comes Sunshine,Loose Lucy, They Love Each Other) ...
Definitely the 1974 Europe run, no doubt about it. This is shortly before the October Winterland run that became the "Movie". Speaking of equipment that gives this away, I'm a drummer and Billy is playing on the kit that he briefly used in 74. Very 70s, no bottom heads and no floor toms, the toms are mounted all the way around. Is there more footage of this?
Hey man, let's get in the VW van, not take a bath, women don't shave yer arms and we'll go around the country and freeload off of hard working citizens.
Have a bunch okids and name em 'all Jerry or stir fry! Oh yeah, Dude, want some of my kool aid?
I'd bet that this footage is from Saturday, September 21, 1974 Palais des Sports, Paris, France. Row Jimmy was the opener for the third set and was followed by Big River. A comparison with another (far better) audio source for the same show seems to confirm this. Any takers on the bet?
Deadheads pay attention! Great snippet. Hope more comes out from this show. Yes, it seems like 1974 to me - Phil with Beard, no Pigpen, Weir's larger guitar etc. etc. much more like the movie.
This video is unquestionably from '74, or at least definately not from 1972 - they're using the phase cancellation microphones, Jerry's guitar isn't a strat, no Pigpen and Phil has that huge bass strap pad.
It is definitely from 74. It could have been from Paris though I have not got the set list in front of me to say so, but, Weir has short hair, Lesh has a beard & that strap... besides the other stuff people mention.
Definitely 1974, you can tell by Garcia's guitar. In 72 he played a strat, in 73 he played a white guitar, the guitar in this video is the proto type for the rose bud and tiger guitar he would come to play and I think there is some truth to the show being in Paris...Just before the Winterland shows in October, they did play Paris, and on 9-21-74 they did play Row Jimmy into Big River...
crank that audio! this is nutrious. listen to those harmonies, and dynamics. was that just one drummer i heard? no wonder it has dynamics. hear that chorus when the drums cymble out, and the a keyboard plays a single skeletol line along with those ethereal harmonies, that was so refine. peace.
Ah, spoken like a true '74-head. I'm with you, the vocals have an etheral reediness, like they are piped into the exotic '74 atmosphere at their utmost evocative appropriateness. But you know, others don't like the vocals aspect of '74.
Yeah have to agree this is a rare one the only thing I can think of is the Dead movie from this era. Good stuff. BTW how do we even know if its Paris if the guy who posted it didnt know it was 1974? It is 74 but how do we know where? Who figured that out?
That makes no sense, They played a few gigs in 1974. Still doesnt answer where this footage is from. Are you saying Paris is the only place that year they played Row Jimmy because thats not true. The guy didnt even know it was 74 so, once again how do we even know its Paris it could be Winterland or Roanoke or where ever that year.
Ah - I thought you were questioning the year and not the venue locale -- I think the logic methodology applied here is matching a recording (e.g., see jpriley80 a few posts above, who apparently has a soundboard of the show which would obviously have the date documented) with the video. Deadbase is helpful with this, as would be the Way Back Machine Internet Archive, if you're not already familiar with those tools for archeological digs. Enjoy.
9/21/74 is the correct date.

The 9/21/74 second set started with the Phil Lesh and Ned Lagin composition Seastones. Wish you had that on video!

Its gotta be 74' not '72 - look at the mikes - its the wall of sound. Look at the pictures of Europe '72
its the old tie-dyed system.

It's '74, no "at least about it." And to change the subject, do you notice they start a "Big River"?

Because "Row Jimmy" wasn't around until then. I think this clip is nice, but for me, Donna's contribution was, to put it nicely "optional."

Great song. One of my favorites. this version is not the best, but it's neat to see them on video.

You forgot to mention Phil's furry strap, which was a staple of '74.
SmelOdies 5 years ago
agreed, its clearly the 1974 tour - they played France then too. Song is Row Jimmy Row (partial)
which wasn't written yet in 1972. And Jerry is playing the Wolf guitar, which he didnt have in 1972.
All this aside - thanks for this cool clip!
