  • These guys are telling the truth about education. I'm almost finished with an MBA, and higher education has been a joke. It really hasn't taught me any practical skills except how to write papers in MLA and APA format... Universities are a rip off. Go download the UDK Tool set, learn it, build with it, get really good, and get a job.

  • IM HAVING TROUBLE FINDING A GOOD FREE GAME DEVELOPMENT SOFTWARE, IM IN A HUGE NEED OF HELP HERE! DOES ANYONE KNOW A GOOD ONE OR ANY RESOURCES?

    THANKS!

  • @rgGamerfreak69 Udk.com (unreal development kit) has everything you need to create great games.

  • @rgGamerfreak69

Learn Java and write your own Android game engine, that'll get you started. And please never use caps lock again...

  • @rgGamerfreak69 Learn C#, use XNA, and create your games, your code, be a pro

  • This is one of the few good IGN vids out there

  • I would love to work for ign.

  • something i realy want to do is get into the game industry. im realy good at story telling, im descent in art and im descent in computers. i just dont know where to start thou. i dont have the full support that i would like to have and in my area theres barely any places to help get into a job like this. my passion for games and getting into this job is unbelievable and games have a massive part in my life. any help?

    Please reply and thank you!

  • school helps but its not the number one thing they look for. if u have a passion for gaming your already heading in the right direction.

  • School, giving you the basic knowledge and motivation/confidence, and then afterwards your on your own and need to go and get to doing things yourself. I guess the only thing scaring most people is the age...

  • Let me tell you'all: In order to break into game industry, you'll need high grade for either science or art stream in education. If you're on science; you can do programming, if you're on art; you can do graphics. Plus, do not wait for people to hire you, you must do few projects and work on them, and when you look for studios who are looking for talent such as yours, tell them why they need you and you're done :) ~ Advice from me, director/producer of Junnav Productions game developer.

  • @DaFleegsta. none of that will be worth putting on a resume. every fat little kid in highschool thinks they can do this job.

  • @WeaverLED which is irritating when there are those of us who went to school to do this, and learned on the first day, "just because you can plan video games, does not mean you know how to make games"

  • Im still in highschool and already programming online games by myself.. How valuable is that for getting hired for the first time / breaking into the industry? I've been programming for 7 years now, I'm top of the class in computer science, I have dozens of past projects, and next year I'm going to college for game programming as well..

Compared to the competition, do I have a reasonable chance to land a job?

  • @DaFleegsta the only people who have a real edge on the competition are people who already have 5 years experience in the industry. good luck, your gonna need it

  • What happens if you want to write stories for games? I'm not good with drawing stuff for crap and i have no clue on howd progam but i sure can write something great.

  • One thing I would like to point out is passion. (0:22). Know where it is directed in video games: Do you love playing the games, or do you love games?

For me, I am almost always drawing, and even before I sleep I am always trying to think of not new ideas, but changes to current ones to make them better and better. I was unlucky, for I didn't actually have a computer and the tools to start making games, but when I did, I almost stopped playing video games(without friends) and began practicing.

  • between each press, wait a second: press 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 then leave it there. The video in a nutshell.

  • 1:30 twitchy as fuck :P

  • Cliff blezinskis got swagg i tell you i love his games and some day i want to drive to do what he has done or better

  • School is just waste of time .. long live free education "The real education"

  • @HoSsaMVip1 thats what the homeless guy around my town always say

  • Comment removed

  • @HoSsaMVip1 All American forms of schooling is a waste of you life and time. My friend tried some self education system, Now he is a big publisher and I work for him in the industry

  • I'm 16 years old, 1,5 year preparing before going to the Game Academy. I really have a passion for games and I try my best to train and train. What the most important part is that I really like modelling, texturing, rigging, so seeing how this object I made comes to life. I know there are lots of people who don't take me too serious, but I will proof to family and friends that I'm capable, and be a much happier man then those who dislike the games industry - Joris.

  • i'm 12 and i know how to model and i know the basics of scripting. i also know HTML.

i'm mostly certain i'll be a game desighner

  • Look, I really want to join the industry, but I haven't seen one brown person in the industry, and I'm afraid I'll be made fun of because of my skin colour :/

  • @InvalidBullet

Dude thats awesome. The game industry could do with less white people lol jk.

    GO FOR IT!

  • @InvalidBullet That sucks doesnt it :(... Where is the diversity?

  • Are there any females considered as a top game developer?

  • @goodalwaysworks there is some girlz in ubisoft thats imporntent

  • @goodalwaysworks someone high up in bioshock 2's development was a woman but mostly men play games so men are usually better at creating them, atleast in bioshock 2's hardcore gameplay.

  • @HRHippieRanger Is that true for Bioshock Infinite too?

  • fighting, fps and rpg games are my main thing i want to work on.

  • @GeTSUGAxX9 those are all really different games, maybe you could try working on a hybrid like borderlands.

  • for example?

  • 2:56 fuck....Well there goes my dream...

  • @masterdave122 It's like, "well you worked on SPORTS games so fuck you too" XD

  • i realy want to work in the game industry. i want to make the maps and that things, what do i need to know? how is it done in a game company?

  • "If you're the kind of kid who grew up loving video games in your room with your door closed playing your console games, and didn't spend any time talking to human beings... chances are you're not going to be effective in this business"

YES, so get outside and don't be afraid of people!

  • i will make it

  • What are good programs that I could use to make a video game. Its doesnt have to be top of the line programming but it has to be easy to use cause Im a beginner. Any advice?

  • @chile0wns You could use: Flash, Scratch, Alice 3d, Dark Basic, you can also make basic to professional level games in game engines such as UDK, Source SDK, Unity 3d and many more, you just gotta find em.

  • @Reload25 Thank you very much :)

  • my company name will be called "Prefix"

  • these advices are great..

  • I have an ide scarface 2 tony comes back as a zombie!and ses " say hello to my littel friend AGIN!!"

  • @TompanX .... keep thinking for more ideas..

  • western game developers sucks , japanese game developers are the best , so fuck you all western developers you can suck my dick

  • @blueyesalexya ....huh? umm...provide a logical explanation for how a set of individuals in the same field can be superior to one another based on where they come from. You're not stating who's better you're stating whose method of game development you prefer.

  • @Ravengaurd6 well , western mother fucking developers knows only making shooting games WTF ? japanese game developers just are not lazy ...they make the best out of any game , look at namko tekken , look at capcom games , fighting games etc , those are bad ass graphics , westerners know how to make only shooting , why is that ? cuz americans are prepared for army from childhood that's shit , play an adventure game like shadow of colossus or god of war made by japanese , western titles sucks

  • @blueyesalexya

God of war wasn't produced by a Japanese team, it was developed by an American crew of Sony developers that were based in Santa Monica California.

and truth be told the west has actually produced a whole slew of remarkable rpgs and adventure games.

  • @Ravengaurd6 yes , my bad ...but game engines are made by japanese

  • @blueyesalexya

not all of them, the Unreal engine wasn't....

  • @blueyesalexya

Japan started the gaming industry, but all of their games have a fucked up storyline or something similar like that.

Western developers maybe less, but they are better, take Valve for instance, anything they make is gold, and none of them are from Japan.

  • @Ginteru valve has half life , anyway japan has the best titles , examples :tekken , resident evil , castlevania , lots of fighting games (westerners have only mortal kombat and it sucks bad) , shadow of colossus , ICO , metal slug (tell me any hand drawn western game like metal slug ?) , metal gear , samurai spirits , zelda series and lots of them , western games will never beat japan , god of war sucks balls

  • @blueyesalexya

Why don't you just shut up and go fapping to your anime porn collection?

It's like betraying your own country, Valve won a shitload of game of the years, while Japan focuses on making games out of the same gender, style and elements by the hundreds.

We have Killzone, Assassin's Creed, Fallout, Starcraft, Mafia, Spore, Lara Croft, Battlefield, Call Of Duty, Halo, Grand Theft Auto, and a lot of other great games I'm failing to mention.

  • Comment removed

  • @blueyesalexya I gotta love how you tell people to play a game like GoW the first second but when you realize it was developed by western developers you call it shit.

  • @blueyesalexya

    Obvious troll is obvious.

  • Great Advice

  • BUT CHIN!!!!!!

  • IGN = Biggots

  • mmm, i wanted some advice from shigeru miyamoto but this advice are great =)

  • you can be an animator and draw characters or environment, you don't have to be a programmer and do any of those c++ stuff if you don't want to

  • what happen if all these developers team up and create a single game that can do anything lol

  • Id love to make games, but i cant programme for shit, fuck java and fuck c

  • @Sronpop go buy a diy book. i bought one that taught how to make source engine mods and now ive been making new weapons and models. all it takes is practice and time

  • @Sronpop hey man, i hated it at first, its so frustrating learning them but after you learn them, its so much fun and its definitely worth it. keep on trying.

  • Hi im nbot sure if you read you comments or not but as you said you put out your tools if it is posible can you send me a private email with the link. I am in the process of creating my own curvival horror game mutch on the lines of left 4 dead or killing floor.

    thanks

  • i am so crap at programming, but i want to do what these ppl do...

  • Practice dude, you can do it! Every skill on the planet can be learned. There's no such thing as natural talent. Everyone in the world who has achieved something achieved it because they wanted to. If you want to do it, do it! Don't let your modesty hold you back.

  • @Distrub122334 Hey sorry, someone marked this as spam so I didn't get a notification that you replied!

If you want to become a game developer, you need to look into the different branches of game development. Then ask yourself an important question, "what exactly is it that I want to do with games?"

If you want to be a creative director, basically the only route is to start your own independent company. If you want to code engines from scratch, you'll want your bachelor's in computer science.

  • @Czarewich There are many aspects of game design to get into, but if you want to work on big-name games by huge developers, most of those routes will require at least a bachelor's in computer science, or an internship for work experience. The art route is a bit saturated with workers, as is the writing route, but as long as you practice and build an unique and professional portfolio that you're proud of, and you have charisma, you'll be able to go a long way! Also, keep an eye on local projects.

  • There are always tons of funding programs, grants, incubator companies, and incentives in every city. You'd be surprised how many of them are catered toward film, but apply towards video games too! You should also subscribe to gamasutra, kotaku, and check for city specific services. My province has a website gameonmanitoba, and your city, state, or province might have something similar.

Lastly, don't be afraid to speak about your dreams. You might bump into someone who can help them come true!

  • @Czarewich

Thanks for the encouragement, my good sir!

  • @Ginteru Any time.

  • @Czarewich wow dude, most inspirational comment on youtube ever. all toher comments i ever read were troll comments but this is some good shit right here. and it's true, there is no such thing as "natural talent".

  • @lucirz Hey I'm flattered, thanks.

  • @Czarewich That's not really true, but practicing doing what you like is vital.

My ability to sing and play guitar didn't stem from practice. Natural talent, it was just there, I just picked it up and did it. I'm mostly self taught, 3 years in music school was just an eye opener for what i really wanted to do.

5 to 7 hours a day i practice, not because i must, but because i like it. And i think that is vital. Finding something that you like doing, even when not working.

  • @Czarewich if there was any option for even more thumbs up, from me, you'd get them! Great advice that applies to everything in life!

  • @outbreaker2008 i wish that skill can be learned (More thumps up)

  • Kojima

  • what's a mod?

  • its a modifcation to an already exitsting game just like counter strike it was from half life then people moded the game

  • Pause on 1:44 extra lol

  • Where do I start???? C++?

  • if your skills are fluent in C++ then you are in the right path.

  • i want to go into video game design or maybe programming but i live in toronto. Finding work is probably impossible unless ubisoft or ea open offices here. I love computers and i really want to do what these guys are doing. Something they love.

  • wasnt Tabula Rasa a major failure

  • 1:43... biggest butt chin ive seen in my life. very ugly. LOL

  • i absolutely love where video games are headed. No longer is it about countless hours of button mashing, limited social life and boredom! Gaming has now placed a solid footprint in the online world. it has truly flourished into a unique art-form. i now see where i am supposed to be! i have to get my foot in this damn door! lol

  • Anyone taking action in response to this video, PLEASE send me a message as soon as possible!

  • My name is Todd :P

  • i wonder how much you get paid for videogame design to make a living, i would do this since videogames are one of my passions

  • well it really depends on which department you are in.Level design, script design, sound design...but you got to start somewhere to climb up the industry ladder.

  • Playign video games and developing them are ALOT more different.

  • is it just me or does todd howard remind anyone of steve carell?

  • its just you

  • and you think cliff bleszinki actually was the one who made them changes to GOW2? he's epics creative director and poster boy. nothing to do with how the game plays...

  • that Richard "Lord British" guy when on a space expedition to the ISS once.

  • .... What? What you just said has nothing to do with the video I just watched.

  • Today more people are involevd in making a single game. Now game designers are like brigde designers, its very procedure.

And the old school nerds are no longer appreciated.

    Its all social now.

If Einstein have lived today he would probably have been totally rejeted by the math/physics/computer community.

  • ben matters, does he have parkinsons?

  • THE GUY at 2:24 what is this guy saying? he says people on their resumes have worked in 5 games but they dont show for it and he needs people to show what THEY did. does he mean what they did as a mod or a flash game because if u make 5 games its just as much as your game then your co workers

  • What he means is make sure when you apply for a job in the game industry is that make sure you have a portfolio that shows the work that you have done.

  • isnt making 5 games work you have done?

  • You'd think that..

  • :38 THROUGH :40 where can you learn for yourself?!?

  • at college! that was preety much given

  • CLIFFY B ARRGGHH!!

  • 1:35 butt chin..

  • lol BCE

  • sure

  • i think my inspiration is todd lol

  • 1:17

    That guy is very familiar.

  • looks familiar*

He looks like Al from "Home Improvement"!

  • I like this video! I enjoyed it a lot. haha Very nice. It's cute in a weird way lol. but good job making it! it's unique!!

  • Richard Garriot? IGN really is irrelevant. Kill Murdoch.

  • your a fucking moron. go spam some other site.

  • ok.... 1st) christianity isnt the only religion in the world. 2nd) what does this have to do with anything. 3rd) get a life bro and stop preaching on youtube all mighty one. i mean, i beleive in God and I am a catholic and all but, seriously

  • Fuck you.

  • Thanks for the video, it was interesting.

  • I really want to get into the business and industry of video games and although i dont know how to make flash games or script and stuff like that i really have a drive to learn and do it and i hope that if i can learn i could make a bigger step into getting a job in a company.

  • If you have the money but don't know where to get started, there's lotsa game design schools like Digipen and Vancouver Film School. But you need to be good at math and stuff, they're quite expensive, and it is VERY hard work. I was thinking maybe when I get out of high school, I could major in marketing or business, or something like that, and minor in courses like computer science, and etcetera to get prepared for the industry. Then I figured I could go to Vancouver Film School.

  • I think i've just been inspired ^_^

  • I am thinking about it, I am a very creative guy but I think I'll be a producer/script writer, I won't be the guy on a big ass rig doing some amazing graphical work because that shit looks annoying.

I am kind of undecided but I want to go to the airforce first, retire early and start the games. I hate multiplayer but I love single player so I will end up making games similar to bioshock. I have some amazing ideas in mind.

  • i want to get into the industry cuse i live and breath gaming but i dont know how in the hell to make a flash game. all i do is mod some games

  • I really want to be a video game maker, and I'm learning how to make flash games, but I don't know how to mod and that seems like modding is more of a bigger step to being a video game maker.

  • I cant help you, i just wanted to wish you the best of luck ^_^

  • Stay in school kids... xDDD

  • good advice (thats the job i want)

  • shit man i wanned to b a vid game designer but ther is so many steps to it its almost imposible to make it

  • Not if you try reeeeally, reeeeeeeeeeaaaaally hard, believe in yourself, and... er... use some magic... pixie dust?

  • that didnt help tho? Like what should i take at scchool where should i look for a chance, they dont care reaalii cause their already in the job :(

  • add R1syed heart me as a auther and all my levels and play all my levels heart everything for me please and after that thank you

Ill try helping in a trophy game if u want remember heart everything please

    little big planet

  • can i play al you levels too

  • I mod Garry's Mod.

  • This is my dream Job ever since i started playing video games when i was 5 Years old

  • mines too and this video is an inspiration to me

  • ok.......that was pretty much useless advice.....nothing actually concrete like where or what to study, educational resources, an actual plan on how to get in, these guys dont give a shit cause they're already in

  • Yeah I know. I also can't believe that they aren't telling everyone to go to college and take computer science or something similar.

  • @insomnia100 If you're that fucking stupid to need to look for video game development programs from the ign youtube channel, then you will never be able to create games.

It's stubborn little fucking shits like you that don't take the best advice they will ever get in their sad pathetic lives seriously, and end up working in a gas station for the rest of their life. Fucking nigger.

I HATE console gamers, go fuck off back to your dysfunctional consoles in your own world.

  • @KoolKluxKlan666 well i guess i will forget my dreams and joy of creating just becaus i wanted to listen to the leading people in the industri.

  • this insprided me so much!!!

faved it :D...gunna folow their advice and hope for the best :)

and gd look to anyone ells wanting to get into the industry, if u do then good on ya :p

i wud most probbably wanan g with smaller devz, like highvoltage (theyre small ish atm) and nprobbably not someone like EA lol

  • i'm all ready making a game, so this vid was nice, but i don't need the industry to say anything

    already know it
