The cat uses the narrow pupils to focus on the target (estimating distance, etc.), right before the attack the widen the pupils to have a greater field of vision, since, cats expect their prey to run away.

I was looking at my sister's cat this morning and damn, those eyes went from really narrow to fully round in 3 seconds. That was some scary shit

My cat does the exact same thing! When he's about to pounce or is playing with me, his pupil fills up almost his entire eye. It's so cute. XD
