This was DCI midwest, real turf, it had rained that day. It was hot and muggy. We were sweating like pigs in the uniforms. That was Todd Welch and that was a bit of dueling bangos and Frank Zappa mixed together. We heard a Frank Zappa record at a party and then Todd started to play that in the solo. I marched that year in the soprano line and never tired of hearing this solo.
@alexzondo Incredible stuff. I thoroughly enjoy those Madison Scouts corps from '74-'76 because of Welch's xylophone playing. I've never heard anyone have so much fun with a xylophone before.
He had fun at working hard. He practiced and focused on his instrument. He had some really nice street beats. I would like to thank the guy who posted this because it was really great to see again. He played snare in Santa Clara which by the way had a great snare line that year.
Correct, Astro Turf and the U of P letters are some of the keys to identifying Franklin Field. Players from 'The Bell' also practiced here (now there's a trivia question!). I recall droves of afternoon performers dropping from heat exhaustion.....that asphalt and green synthetic surface soaked up the hot/humid sun. The Scouts were simply awesome. What a soprano line!
Ya, This is not Franklin Field and '75 Finals. There was turf @ The U of Penn Field..Hard to explain, and maybe the crowd audio doesn't translate, but there was serious buzz around their complete show!!
Two guys with marching bells and xylophone put on perhaps the most effective presentation of keyboard playing in drum corps history. Please do away with electronics and an army of front-pit players with their $500,000 worth of instruments and equipment cluttering the front sideline! There is certainly elegance in the simplicity of this drum line. Nice snare work, too!
Nice snare work?? The entire line plays together about 25 seconds out of that entire solo.....I'd suggest you watch the '75 SCV excerpts for nice snare work.
best percussion break ever

@alexzondo He is a supremely talented musician. I hope he's still playing.
When did he march with Santa Clara?

One of the most impressive exhibitions of marching mallet percussion. Amazing performance. This never gets old.

@newtojo Yes, I agree that they put on a spectacular performance. But seriously? Do away with the pit? No.

@newtojo I know! I march bells. People need to man up and march mallets.

I believe this was DCI Midwest in Whitewater, not Franklin Field for Finals.
