Americans knew nothing about world history, world geography or current world events. All they seemed to care about was Civil War dates, the military and dead Presidents. The students weren't dumb by nature, just horribly educated. Years later, my CDN friends who attended US college said US freshman year=CDN 11th grade.Sad.

Depends on how you define democracy really. People voting on something has genuinely been around for forever. Greece just adopted it to a government structure. However, the structure of Greek democracy is impractical in the modern world, and so the current "democracy" isn't actually the same thing. Also, a lot of the ideals of democratic governments were actually based around the Napoleonic code.

I used to live in UK, and they rarely knew where Hungary is. Most of them even don't know what Great Britain means! So, actually we do not need to go to USA to find people who has limited knowledge. I do not protect this woman here, but this is not just about Americans. In Indonesia people think that Hungary is in the USA. I don't think this is sad, but general people just simply not interested. They can live without this knowledge.
