I'm from southen Philippines. I really don't know the origins of Silat but I met a Silat master from Sulu Island (southern Philippines). He gave us a demo at our MK headquarters. A very humble and skillful master. He said he learned it from his father. Sulu Island is near Borneo. Mabuhay po Kayo.

According to history. Malay culture was born in Jambi, Sumatra. Silat is an integral part of Malay culture. The core form of Silat was created and 1st developed in the island of Sumatra and Java in Indonesia.
It was later spread when people from Java, Sumatra, and Sulawesi migrated to Malay peninsula and other islands. They passed on the art to their descendants who in turn developed it into various styles.
So now each of Malay countries have their own distinct form of Silat.

poin taken. but martial arts practice is not only about killing and maiming others in a street fight. sports competition enables the practitioners to perform certain elements of the art in a much safer way. it is also used to propagate the martial art to the public. olahraga ( sport ) is just one of the elements that a pesilat goes thru in his silat education.
ye i know, actually i was more talking about competitions like TKD where people do those kicks and don't seem to care about defense... it's all about getting points.

If you do pencak silat, you should know there are hundreds, if not thousands of different styles which looks beautiful in demo's, but when doing competition, anything style-ish gets thrown out of the window. This is definately pencak though.
Beautiful in Demos? i do the real thing. and it looks beautiful in real life. But yes competition does throw alot out the window. But to me this doesnt look like pencak silat. More like a Karate.
This is pencak silat :) And like Xiph1980 said, anything stylish is throw out! I also train Pencak silat Bongkot style, more modern style of pencak silat here in Holland. Our training's are more into competitions, so the real tradition is a little faded.. but we still do that :)
Cuz it's not the true learning of Pencat Silat, western country have adapted it to make a kind of hybrid pencak silat more accessible and easier to learn for people whose martial arts don't belong to their culture.
pentjak silat is also very popular in Holland.. But thats kinda logic because the indonesian came here after the war! a lot of indos live here now! But the style has been changed compared to the original!

no.. you cannot compare it with MMA of JKD!! We only train little pieces from every art that are usefull in real life combat instead of in compatition fights where there are rules.. we also don't do compatitions but train for our selfs with a little group of 10 people :) not many people know that Tsou Chin excists! The original silat predates immigrant influences so NOT religion-based although it focuses on inner spiritual development. Many young Malays are put off that non-Muslims are learning this art and becoming masters while the Malays are losing its inheritance and thus identity. Maybe to encourage more Malays, integration needed together with Malay youths and relax the close-door Islamic requirements. Mahagurus should take note of this because culture is being eroded by this double standard.
To me I don't care what your guys chat. The main thing is, as long as we learn martial art is important. Why? becoz in war or battlefield, enemy doesn't ask, U learn taekwondo or silat. They just wanna kill U. So, up to U to defend your country from invaders by using any martial art.

I'm a jiu jitsu marial artist. I like Pencak silat because it's a beautiful martial art. In the past I've practised taekwondo and the matches in the video look almost similar as a taekwondo match. A lot of kick techniques. These matches are different than the practical performance during a training. With pencak silat, you can develop your inner force. This makes pencak silat a very impressive martial art. Do not under estimate these people. They can hurt you without touching you.
Thank you for your offer. Someone is going to teach me Satria Nusantara to develop my inner force. I also started pencak silat (Gerak Saka style). Is always good to learn new things and then combine it with your own background. Trying to develop new combinations. Anyways, I wish you a lot of succes with your career.
did you know most of silat fighter is actually from tkd in malaysia, silat is just copycat from tkd, malaysia slogan "malaysia boleh" apply in malaysia only, when go oversea "malaysia takboleh" try fight in mma, i'm sure they will learn the lesson.

army n police train tkd first,then later they developed silat sparring with rules and regulations,original silat practise for demo,their training not allow visitor to view with high fencing blocking the view during training section and some silat's branch train black magic.
there was once when malay guy train tkd n silat invite tiger spirit possessed spar in tkd tounament and banned from sparring.

According to history. Malay culture was born in Jambi, Sumatra. Silat is an integral part of Malay culture. The core form of Silat was created and 1st developed in the island of Sumatra and Java in Indonesia.
It was later spread when people from Java, Sumatra, and Sulawesi migrated to Malay peninsula and other islands. They passed on the art to their descendants who in turn developed it into various styles.
So now each of Malay countries have their own distinct form of Silat.

@cbusilat correct, the word `malaysia` only express that: `we are malays` and thats it, while malays as race spread along: central and southern philippine, singapore, indonesia, malaysia, southern vietnam (former champa kingdom region) and southern thailand(especially yala and fattani province)

poin taken. but martial arts practice is not only about killing and maiming others in a street fight. sports competition enables the practitioners to perform certain elements of the art in a much safer way. it is also used to propagate the martial art to the public. olahraga ( sport ) is just one of the elements that a pesilat goes thru in his silat education.

If you do pencak silat, you should know there are hundreds, if not thousands of different styles which looks beautiful in demo's, but when doing competition, anything style-ish gets thrown out of the window. This is definately pencak though.

This is pencak silat :) And like Xiph1980 said, anything stylish is throw out! I also train Pencak silat Bongkot style, more modern style of pencak silat here in Holland. Our training's are more into competitions, so the real tradition is a little faded.. but we still do that :)

no.. you cannot compare it with MMA of JKD!! We only train little pieces from every art that are usefull in real life combat instead of in compatition fights where there are rules.. we also don't do compatitions but train for our selfs with a little group of 10 people :) not many people know that Tsou Chin excists! Maybe one day people will!

The original silat predates immigrant influences so NOT religion-based although it focuses on inner spiritual development. Many young Malays are put off that non-Muslims are learning this art and becoming masters while the Malays are losing its inheritance and thus identity. Maybe to encourage more Malays, integration needed together with Malay youths and relax the close-door Islamic requirements. Mahagurus should take note of this because culture is being eroded by this double standard.

I agreed with U regarding the spirit of martial arts. In the battlefield, spirit n mental is the two key element while we at war. Yes. off course we have to focus one martial art when dealing with spiritual concept. I said like that previously becoz lots of people said their martial art is the best. I'm a jiu jitsu marial artist. I like Pencak silat because it's a beautiful martial art. In the past I've practised taekwondo and the matches in the video look almost similar as a taekwondo match. A lot of kick techniques. These matches are different than the practical performance during a training. With pencak silat, you can develop your inner force. This makes pencak silat a very impressive martial art. Do not under estimate these people. They can hurt you without touching you.

army n police train tkd first,then later they developed silat sparring with rules and regulations,original silat practise for demo,their training not allow visitor to view with high fencing blocking the view during training section and some silat's branch train black magic.
there was once when malay guy train tkd n silat invite tiger spirit possessed spar in tkd tounament and banned from sparring.
that why silat not popular, even most malay join tkd or karate

is allowed, UFC is a for of MMA (mix martial art), there just havent any fighter in UFC who use pencak silat. just base on UFC most fighter use jiu jitsu, kick box, wrestling and boxing. technical fight like silat are kinda hard to master i gues, expecially in all out no holding back fight.
