  • McGovern's first choice was Boston mayor Kevin White, mentioned here. The Massachusetts delegation to the convention threatened to walk out on McGovern if that happened, because White had been an Edmund Muskie supporter. Ted Kennedy refused to share the ticket, so Eagleton was the one. Interestingly, Massachusetts was the only state McGovern carried in Electoral votes on election day.
