  • Dont feel bad...Ii is hard to produce a video for a band that at thier pinnacle of success,,,,would not even comprehend what a music video even was.

I remember as a youth listening to this and thinking it was the coolest song I ever heard.

    Thanks man!!!

  • This song has helped me through so much stuff...it got me through a 15.5 mile race around Cape Ann, MA... I think of that every time I hear the seagulls... this is probably the best song ever!

  • Man against man even Here? Divide and conquer that is their trick...this is music for the soul stop the ugliness. Thank you for the post and being YOU Happy 2009 to ALL..! Hey this planet is our ship....

  • @Creatorisintherain Shut up, hippie.

  • Reply to dahoss65: No. Fletcher Christian is the good guy. But it is a fact that compared to other British sea captains, the real William Bligh was not as bad as Hollywood films have made him out to be.

  • Brings me back to the early 70s when I was just out of high school and me and my girlfriend use to drive through the Pocono Mountains in Northeast Pennsylvania. One night we were making out in the back seat of my car and I told her that I am her captain until I found out later she was a guy so I threw up all over the back seat and ran home never looking back. I left my car behind and as each hour went by I was getting closer to my home. What an amazing decade it was.

  • hahah thats rough man

  • oh damn! hahahaha

  • WTF!!

How in the fuck did it take you that long to find out she was a dude? Too much LSD? LOL

  • No sir my older brother was in college in the late 60s and he would be tripping on LSD every weekend. He lived out in California. I was a heavy pot smoker and experimented with acid that's how I met that girl (really a guy). But looking back it is impressive how the technology of the time could make him look so much like a chick. That was until she showed me her dick and my life was forever changed. Lesson to be learned: Be careful who you go out with and lay off the drugs.

  • Remember blasting this on my 8 track blowing down Rt 3 in my 65 Volvo 544...Take me back YouTube take me way back.....yeeeaaaa sweet..

  • Thank you, I'm too stupid to make up my own mind. I'll put that on my ballot. In fact I'll not claim resonsibility for helping any of these loosers Pres.

  • Cool song. Hey, while I am here, do not vote for Obama in November. He is a Communist, and might even have sympathies with the muslims. Plus, his wife is a loose cannon. I know this is true because I heard it on Sean Hannity's show, and Hannity is a good freaking American. Happy forth of july?

  • This is classic rock at it's very best. The song reminds me of the mutiny of the Bounty and the dire prediciment that the Captain of the Bounty, William Bligh found himself in. In reality, he was no where near as bad as the films made on this subject make him out to be.

  • So what are you saying, that Fletcher Christian was the actual bad guy?

  • The group was awesome as "Terry Knight and The Pack" and just got better when they became known as Grand Funk Railroad. Some awesome tunes came out of the late 60s- early 70s era. Closer to Home and Inside Looking Out are two of my faves.

  • no video,no problem. i just want to hear the song.

  • @madog20 don't need video, though a joint, bottle of wine and some headphones make the sailing with this song even smoother........

  • perfect!

  • I always think about driving to Lake Superior and the northern shores of it when I hear this song. Excellent tune! Thanks for posting it.

  • monumental song, period.

  • Someone told me this is about Vietnam???

  • No, it's about LSD.

• I am 51 now but when I was younger, i got kissed by Mark Farner following a concert. I used to play this song Closer to Home SO much that my dad would say, "you're gonna be getting farther away from home if you don't turn down that stupid "Closer to Home" song!!!!

  • I used to practice this song with when we were teenagers (garage band) and the neighbors call the cops on us. We were too loud late at night, this was our first song. My fingers did bleed too.

  • I am 51 now but once I got kissed by Mark Farner immediately following a concert.Well, there were about 4 girls who he kissed and I was one.

  • All you young Funk Cousins need to start showing your loyalty to their music by signing the petition to get this band into the ROCK HALL OF FAME.

  • I first heard this song when I was 11 years old and never forgot it. I am 45 now and it still sounds as wonderful and unforgettable as it did then. Definitely a Rock classic.

  • Someone told me this osng is a tribute to Morrison, Hendrix, and Joplin.

  • considering Morrison, Joplin and Hendrix were still alive when this song was released

  • Fuck you. :)

  • Te is!

  • Summer 1973-three old friends of mine driving thru the Blue Ridge Mountains at sunset-this song adding to the beauty of it all. Always Grand Funk!

  • A simple band with heart-felt music.

These are ordinary people that are able to combine heart and soul with musical instruments & vocals. Many of us have it.

What a dream it must be for these guys.

Sing on brother, rock on drummer.

  • I have loved this song sence I was a kid

  • It doesn't mean a thing unless you become a Funk Cousin.

  • I can play this full damn thing on bass

  • love the ending to this song-- he is just so intent on getting home , no matter what it takes-- "relentless"-- i love it. I know he'll make it. Maybe he has the love of his life waiting there for him.

  • Great original. This Mark Farner classic was named one of the 10 greatest songs of all time by Rolling Stone Magazine.

  • Grand Funk Railroad...Yeah yeah yeah

  • Great song.

  • a mi gusto la opera matter de este grán grupo.

  • yth8er76 - Please give Highway Star one more chance. Try listening to a digitally remastered version. I can't find any better vid or audio here in YouTube.

Same comments that I've been getting from the vids of my top 10 list. They looked up Highway Star and they get an old live vids with poor audio. I wish someone will post a better version.

  • im sorry but i dont think its the best song to go on #1 top 10 best rock songs. it has nothing to do with better versions besides i have it on my ipod. but at least its in the top 10 so be happy about that.

  • Check out the Shea Stadium live version from 1971. It is awesome.

  • Greatest rock would better be defined as greatest or most influential/prolific. That would include Chuck Berry, Elvis, Beatles, Stones, The Doors, Hendrix, The Who, Led Zepplin, Aerosmith, and Eric Clapton.

  • Rock would be defined as everything from 50's Chuck Berry. Pure rock would be 'Satisfaction', 'Twist and Shout', 'Light My Fire', 'Hard Day's Night', etc. Rock ballads are 'I'm Your Captain', 'Stairway to Heaven' (melody is a knockoff from an ancient Irish song, BTW), 'Hey Jude', etc. Metallica, Guns, and Sabbath are Metal Rock. Hendrix is in a class by himself, even to this day. Therefore, you've got an inaccurate list of the greatest 'rock' songs.

  • Greatest song of all time. 1. Closer To Home/I'm Your Captain - Grand Funk Railroad
