Agnes Baltsa was THE BEST Carmen ever. Elina is good but new performance in Met are not so good as in age of Levine, Baltsa and Carreras.

PS: Garanca with her blue eyes and blond hair is not very creditable gipsy. :P

@cedarjolt You have not heard Irma Pavare, if You say so ;) Irma is much better and more talanted. Anita Garanca was a teacher for both of them, bu, of course, she made a carriere for her beloved daughter and derogated Irma... but Irma was strong enough and made her own progress :)

@warprodigis You are kidding right? Carmen is for the mezzo. Elina is a mezzo... I'd take Garanca as Carmen over Gheorghiu any day. As to the strength, heard her in November at the Met as Carmen. Had rear orchestra seats which are supposedly the worst acoustically. Her voice is sufficiently strong for Carmen, and as LordHettrick said, she has the low register, and her voice is beautiful, and she can act.
