  • What happened out there is horrible but nothing out of the ordinary for any war in history. The facts are that the US sought to minimize and prevent attacks on civilians while North Vietnam made attacks on civilians a centerpiece of its strategy. Americans who deliberately killed civilians received punishments and prison sentences while Communists who did so received commendations.

  • wonder if obama has watched this

powerful series? kinda don't think so

    just saying

  • War is shit. No one wins.

  • Hate the "vietnamese" Americans on here thanking the Americans for the Vietnam war. Its easy to forgive them for things that weren't done to you personaly but to other people.

  • My father is a vet of this war and I firmly believe that Simpson's account of his life applies to so many men and women who were out there. My father lacks the ability to feel for others because of what he did and saw; after seeing your friend's head blown off, that emotion is erased forever. Not to say that the wars of today are easy, but these guys did not have the crazy gadgets the modern guys have now. No laser scopes, or night vision, just a gun and food while trapped in a jungle.

  • @2Phaktor Blame your administrations who send the US army out to invade other countries... The most guilty are the american presidents from JFK and Lyndon Johnson to Obama. Henry Kissinger and Obama even got the Nobel peace price...

And the US have not paid the vietnamese nothing to compensate the damage they caused by intoxicating vietnam with agent orange either.

Killing and raping innocent civilians can never be seen as something else than a war crime.

  • @urbanhedvall There is no need for me to blame anyone at this point. What happened in My Lai is something that has been a staple of wars fought throughout history. No country, culture, army, nation or general is exempt from that. It is a shame that this still goes on to this day, but the world power brokers have put young men in the position to do these things for over a century now. Sad but true. These young men were forced to go primal and had no idea of the ramifications as time goes on.

  • @2Phaktor I basically agree with you. But someone must be held responsible, but not these young people. they were drilled to obey the orders they got. The responsible were their leaders, who denied the vietnamese to decide their own destiny. Before the americans came the french looted the country completely. I feel sorry for you americans who are so hated in many places of the world because of their leaders.

  • @urbanhedvall I will also add that it messed up that reparations were not provided for the people of this village. I have Vietnamese friends and never brought this up and it seems that this is still a taboo subject in regards to the conflicts in which the United States gets involved in. There will NEVER be peace as long as the people wish to remain quiet and enjoy the grossly limited freedoms they 'enjoy'. I will also underscore that these guys were teenagers and young adults.

  • respect Vietnam vets? Why? They could have spent time in the can they did NOT have to fight, is that correct?

  • I'm Vietnamese-American and i thank them for help bringing my mom and Dad t safety in 1979 to America. The commies treated my mom and dad like shit. They killed manyt of ARVN citizens when US pulled out in 1973. My grandfather was a ARVN officer. Tortured and taken to reeducation camp. All countries committed all kinds of war atrocious. the British did, the Germans did it, the Americans did it, and i could list all the shit they did,

Bottom line: Humans make mistakes and we are guilty of it.

  • We must never forget - as the ex-GI says who took part in the atrocities says: 'That is why we don't need another war.' At least not a war where any outsiders come in to 'liberate' others. 'Liberation' can not be given to others. ' Liberation' is something you do yourself, otherwise it is invading.

  • Did that reporter just blame GOD for this................fuck that

  • Vietnam was a war fought by poor bastards, not the rich and privileged like Bush and co. What a fucking joke..AMERICA IS FULL OF SHIT.

  • "it takes 20 years of living to make a man, 10 seconds of war to ruin him"

  • u cant avoid killing innocent people during war but is it necessary to rape??raping innocent women is not a war!!

  • Jesus died for this man, died for me and you, died for us all. at the Cross The Savior Declares: FATHER FORGIVE THEM FOR THEY KNOW NOT WHAT THEY DO. What LOVE! what MERCY!

  • @PEDROCLASSIC We dont need a nut job talking this kind of bullshit here ..God dont exist and if he did he wouldnt have let things like this massacre happen ..and if he does exist then he's a cruel sadistic asshole ...wake up

  • William Calley pressured the soldiers into killing the people.

  • He's son paid the price for him. That fucker should get his head blown into pieces. Whatta bad liar, doesn't even show any true emotional when he's telling the story about his son

  • @coolcoolcoolest Thought You'd like to know that he killed himself in 1997... Non of that was lies, he was clearly a mentally distressed individual, and that constant fidgeting is a sign of heavily supressed emotions. He definitely committed an autrocity and there is very little room for forgiveness, but I can promise you he hated himself much more than you hate him.

I am not defending him as I am equally disgusted by him, but I can tell he was filled with regret.

  • What the Viet Cong had done to their own people is worse than this because these communists had killed thousands of Vietnamese people in Hue in 1968 (Hue Massacre 1968). These filthy Viet Cong buried alive many of them. They entered the South and forced millions of South Vietnamese people to go live in jungles under so called “Kinh Tế Mới” policy, and most of them had died there because of diseases and hungers.

  • @CSVNNguSi this is the mentality of the vichoco dogs, protecting their American master from all wrong doing.

  • @CSVNNguSi this is a typical vichoco. denying all wrong doing of their American master.

  • @vntiger if you will open your eyes you will see more.

I know what Calley did at My Lai and for that he shold have hung as well as some of his superiors.

I also know what the NVA did at Hue, because I was there.

This was not the only incident of abuse. I saw first hand what the VC did to Vietnamese who wanted freedom.

Mistakes are made in war on both sides.

America did not wish to colonize Vietnam, just wanted to help those wanting to be free.

  • @KenLoweTopGo okay first of all we are not like American and Afghan Taliban we are not bloodthirsty warmongers, we don't kill our own people, we kill people who are against us and that is the American and their puppet. I am "sure" you saw first hand from what a VC did to "Vietnamese who wanted freedom" you wouldn't be here to speak of it if that was the case so your bull had just been declassified. second of all free from what? we already defeat the French, we are free. Then comes the warmonger.

  • @vntiger Your injection of the word puppet reinforces your political position. As a Recon Scout I did see it, first hand, in person. I was there for nearly two tours and I personally lost a close friend to the VC. What they did and how they did it was, to put it mildly savage and was done for the maximum emotional effect for the others. Yes the VC did kill their own people or at least other Vietnamese.

  • @KenLoweTopGo you yanks are funny. everyone wants to be free when your country say they want to be free. like the iraqmafghanistan, cuba, panama etc. but when they really need to be free your country sits around and help your friends colonized those country. american came to my country, killed millions of my people, bombed my home, sprayed agent orange into my water, tortured my people, starved my people with embargo.may you never rest in peace! all yanks are the same baby killers.

  • @vntiger I'm not a baby killer you fucking asshole. You don't know all americans. American people are kind gentle people, these criminals are not what we are all like. You stupid asshole. Americans give billions of dollars to try and feed poor children around the world. We send our young men to fight and die to help OTHER countries have freedom. Just because a few criminals did these murders doesn't mean we all are like that. Your country has muderers too. Does that make YOU a muderer? fuck you

  • @vntiger Ya wasn't it the same you VC had my mom and dad life a living hell? Fucking idiot.

  • @vntiger I don’t know how old you are and if were of mature age when the actual events took place and now only hear the stories that have been told but I caution anyone to take most things with a grain of caution. Be skeptical, often there is no black and white, just various shades of grey. I compliment you on your command of English. When I was there I met a lot of nice people and loved the country and it made me sad to see how it was being torn apart.

  • @KenLoweTopGo you yanks are funny. everyone wants to be free when your country say the want to be free. like the iraqi, afghanistan, cuban, panama etc. but when they really need to be free your country sits around and help your friends colonized those country. american came to my country killed people in my lai, polluted my country with cluster bombs, killed millions of my people, bombed my home, and sprayed agent orange into my water and destroy my burnt my house. may you never rest in peace!

  • There were soldiers that day who were present during the mission and chose not to participate in the massacres. The others who chose to murder and justify it by saying, "That's what happens in war" and "we were following orders" were and are always going to be cowards and murderers! What kind of "threat" did these unarmed women, children and the elderly pose to them???

  • After killing one, two, three hundred people without finding any weapons whatsoever in the village, how could they go on and ultimately kill 504 innocent people and say it was justified in any way?

  • My Lai is one of the most disgraceful and disgusting chapters in our country's history. We should never forget it or we'll be doomed to repeat it again....

  • I dont believe that anyone can turn a women/child murderer just because they are under stress.....fucking bullshit you murdering bastards

  • the men who did this..bar the few who are trully sorry 4 what they did..will be judged by the lord..

  • Let's go rape the rapers and cut their penises off and we'll interview them in 20 years.

  • true lesson from this event is that normal people under extreme circumstances can turn into monsters. All the men who did this are guilty, but not more guilty than the people who put these men in that position.

  • @krizzzju1980 amen to that

    hopefully GOD cuts these guys

    a little slack

  • @krizzzju1980 Those that killed the innocent people are more guilty to me. NO ONE forced them to pull that trigger and kill innocent women and children.

  • cowardly act of cowardly bastards.

  • The hardest part of this sad episode to swallow, is that with all of the evidence, the powers that be swept it under the carpet. The fact these soldiers are remorseful (and some clearly not) and have to live with what they've done is a small but neccesary price to pay, by all comparisons. Raping, scalping, cutting tongues out etc etc....War is evil, but there are those that go beyond the conduct of war as a means to fulfil a disgusting and savage curiosity - that's what happened here.

  • Even if you take for granted what you said: how can killing be right, just because some other person told you so? How can you say: well no this is not murder, it's just war? Why do people decide to get together to kill each other? If everyone did not only believe, but know that killing is immoral, there would be no such thing as war.

  • These guys would not have been shot, families locked up, friends persecuted for disobeying orders. There is not a westernised military that trains its soldiers to 'not blink' when faced with 'dilema' on whether or not to shoot civilians, let alone women and children. These assholes simply makes excuses for their behaviour, after the event by saying they were following orders. Orders can be questioned and are in a civilised military. This was a turkey shoot, and the commanders knew it.

  • I'm thinking of joing the British forces because their staying out there longer than my army(Canada,2011)

what regiment is your m8 in?

  • 1st batt Royal Anglican Reg - He's an officer over there. Not sure how easy it is to switch though???

  • bro soldiers arent made to be killing the wrong people here alright "M8" soldier are made to obey the right things and respect in what you do so make the right the decisions MOTHERFUCKER!

  • I am still going to join the Army, better than a dead end job, but I won't kill and civilians

  • area51er6: DON'T JOIN ,,,DON'T DO IT...you will KILL,or THEY will SUICIDE YIOU.why do YOU think the suicide RATE is so HIGH?????,

  • It's the best career out there, and I ain't no college boy!

One of the few places where one can experience true teamwork

  • area51er6 THE TEAMWORK,of fighting for BANKSTERS<<<<and LATER,they WILL program YOU,to turn AGAINST the American people...remember,in the last YEAR,the AMERIACAN public, has bought MORE than 1 BILLION rounds of AMMO PER month,WHO do you THINK,THEY are buying it FOR???The public KNOWS they will be in the MIDDLE of a civial WAR...PICK YOUR side,,the WRONG side,WILL GET YOU KILLED.

  • well, those banksters give me free food and board and a great pension and great benifits medical, dental. sounds like I'm a winner

I can barely afford my rent now!

  • You are pathetic. You think joining the military is an accomplishment? Didn't you know any idiot can join? "It's the best career out there." Ha! For an idiot without any intelligence maybe. Who wants to risk their life for the shitty money they offer? A fool that's who.

Go ahead and throw your life away for a lie, have you heard of the Trans-Afghan Pipeline? It is worth 3 Trillion dollars. No conspiracy you can find info easily. You're willing to possibly give your life for a natural gas pipln

  • Looks like the army marketing hasn't been wasted on you!

  • @gfunk1975, better than a dead end nowhere 9 to 5 life style, fuck sitting behind a computer the rest of your life

  • I'm not trying to lecture you buddy, my mate is in Afghanistan and it's no bed of roses. What's the point in having all those benefits if you're not alive to recoup them

  • well thats where I want to go, and trust me they don't send everybody either, it's a privilage to go there, a lot of civilians think they send everybody right away, not the case. you have to earn the right and thats not even enough sometimes, not like the Vietnam days where you had no choice, now soldiers a fighting to go over there.

  • Maybe a transfer over to the US forces? They'll be plenty going over there within the next 6 Months!!!

  • the US doesn't take foriegners any more, but being a commonwealth citizen I can join the UK, congratulations on your m8 for getting a university degree, check out ross kemp in afghan for Angilan footage.

  • No country or soldier ever really knows what is going to come out of a conflict.

This video is not about American disgrace, it's about the dehuminisation of individuals for Political goals. The real criminals are the politicians, who prosecute wars on the other side of the world against people they don't understand. Today we have other wars that can't be won in Iraq and Afghanistan, from Vietnam there was something to learn which, to this day has not been absorbed.

  • Im glad this piece of shit finally KILLED himself...his actions dis-honored MANY US soldiers,,,in a war spun on LIES.....and YES,we the US lost, and got an asskicking from the People Of The Republic Of Vietnam......I saw enough US COMMITTED ATROCITIES in Vietnam,,,I still see them when I dream....What goes around,COMES Around...

  • I feel for somepeople how can you call this one man a piece of shit when it seems to be the American way

  • gliddon; NOT all Americans think like this asshole, nor did many that went to Vietnam committ atrocities like this jerk... I DO NOT feel sorry for him,,

  • he disgraced and was disgraced himself. but he regretted it so DONT call him piece of shit. u piece of shit

  • tinmanism : I WAS IN Vietnam,,,and IM NOT proud of IT,,,this guy is/was a pc of SHIT,I have to wonder, how many Vietnamese SHOT at ME,and my company,,,because of the INNOCENT LIVES this asshole TOOK....YOU call ME a pc of Shit, and I was in VIETNAM,,looooong before YOU were BORN,,,fuck YOU

  • I think he did more than disgrace himself. He admited killing babys, rape and cutting out peoples tonges. How is an normal human being going to do that in the first place? Fuck that guy, bullshit did he regret it. Sorry as nigger was a piece of shit, just look at his skin color!

  • you say that like you are proud of being a mindless tool of the government. well cheers to you then. have a great life letting people think for you and tell you what to do

  • yes i am proud of being a soldier its all i av wanted to do since i was a kid and at the end of the day no one thinks for me yes we have orders and we do them not because we are told to but because we have to if some one is fireing at me then i am going to fire back and my famly are proud of me because my famly are the men in my unit they are my brothers and i will do anything so that they live

  • the true war criminals are those that open pandora's box...the so called leaders....kill or be killed...hard to argue with that logic...therefore we should never put each other in such a situation....the biggest failure of ww1(the war to begin all wars) was that it did not destroy the myth that war can actually accomplish something...it doesnt and never will.

  • so war dose not accomplish angthing that are just will what about world war 2 and the falklands and the american revolotionary war all therse wars werew fought for the right reasons some times war is the only way to sort things out take 9/11 and 7/7 its called a eye for a eye

  • I don't think what was exemplified here is war, it's just plain murder. You can't defend these men.

  • he committed suicide in 1997.

  • How do you know he committed suicide?

  • just googled his name. You'll find out.

  • how do u know his name??? where does it tell u

  • His name is Varnado Simpson.

  • Personally I always assumed that war was killing your enemies not going into a village and killing innocent people

  • No one is innocent

  • Its sad we have to have war and it makes no sense why they want to brutilize civilians they have nothing to do with that war.

  • somebody should slit his throat like he did to his victims.

  • Ashamed sorry and guilty but no remorse

  • It would be psychologically impossible to continue living if the affected subjects fully came to terms with a "remorse" appropriate to their deeds. That is why they rationalize (or, as the case may be, attempt suicide).
