I wish Amtrak would use Grand Central. The Vanderbilt family must be rolling in their graves if they found out that Amtrak's New York-Chicago trains left out of Penn Station, the archrival to the New York Central. If Amtrak used Grand Central, then we can have ourselves a TRUE 21st Century Limited.
What was the Empire Limited??? New York Central had no such train. You mean the EMPIRE STATE EXPRESS? And this train didn't go to Chicago. It went to Cleveland.
Perhaps you are confusing it with the 20th Century Limited?
this almost reminds me of that scene in the end of "Carlitos Way" in 1993 but still nice catch although i remember them 2 weeks they had to be rerouted
they should run empire service, maple leaf, ethan allen, and andorondack trains out of Grand Central it would reduce clutter in Penn Station for the through trains to D.C and south
Correct. Not just the station, but the tunnels leading to them. Depending on what line the trains run on, the locomotives are either all electric, or a hybrid diesel electric that can draw electrical power from either the onboard engine, or a third rail or overhead wire, the majority of the hybrid locomotives being able to switch on the fly allowing them to serve the underground stations, but also travel on non-electified track as well.
How do the Amtrak trains turn around at Grand Central? Obviously the MNRR trains don't have that issue since they run in reverse out of the terminal. But Amtrak can't. Do they somehow turn around the whole train or somehow just move gennys around? Please investigate and let us know! Thanks!!!!
Besides the over-running shoes that Amtrak's P32AC-DM's have, their locomotives also do not have an escape hatch in the nose of their units, so to go into GCT, They needed to tack one (or two)of our P32AC-DM's on the head end and their unit(s) are then completely shut down.
The reason for the Metro North engines is because the Amtrak Genny can't draw power from the underlying third rail, even though it has a third rail shoe, so what happens is that the 2 MN Gennies will uncouple from the consist at Croton-Harmon and the rest of the train will continue on its way to Albany.
No. Amtrak will be here today the 19th as well and it will then be here again next weekend, the 25th and 26th. So if you want to get your shots of something cool and rare, come to GCT today or next weekend.

the deisel aren't aloud to power up in the station, that is why they have them run electric right??????

I don't know much about America's Railway system, but does this station serve most trains from America or just those that operate within New York?
ForeverSilver 3 years ago
New York region, to as far away as New Haven Connecticut. Amtrak operates out of the other big station, Penn.

Grand Central Terminal services most point north of New York City and the state of Connecticute which is Northeast of the city.
If you wanted to go to Washington DC or Philly or New Jersey, then you have to use Amtrak or NJ Transit trains from Penn Station.

They used to have a balloon track that ran around the front, underneath the station on the lower level. I don't know if it is still being used.

So the amtrak genny (P40) is the 1 with out the 3rd ability right? and the 1's MNRR uses is only for the shuttle?
SPAMPOLICE89 3 years ago
that is correct.

Evidently, an episode of "Wizards of Waverly Place" still has an Amtrak train running through GCT. Since 1990 it has been all Metro-North.
