On the top of my head here's 4 groundbreaking games this generation: Portal, Demon's Souls, Valkyria Chronicles, and Minecraft. Although you can say these games share similarities with older games, they use those similar concepts in a way that makes the overall experience unique and different, completely setting it apart from any other game. FFT, the ogre series, Disgaea, among dozens of other tactics games are all on a grid, with turn based combat, but Valkyria changes it up completely.
@MirinJests I'd completely agree with those 4 games. They are very different games that i've seen this gen. And this might be the reason why I absolutely love Portal and Valkeria Chronicles. :)
Although there are quite a bit of shooters, last generation we saw a plague of turn based RPGs. If you think about it, outside of the narrative (which I think are usually mediocre compared to books, tv series, movies), the turn based system is usually same. The difference from one turned based RPG to another is as drastic as any shooter. It's not only this generation, we've seen a similar trend for every generation. To make it clear, I enjoy both genres.
Gamers have nobody to blame for themselves, publishers are just out to make money and to make money you have to give the customer what they want. They look to the success of CoD and Halo and assume that is what the customer wants, and what's to tell them otherwise? When original ideas are implemented, the game typically doesn't sell well; Case in point, Mirror's Edge and, to a lesser extent Deadly Premonition. The only games we see that are successful now that aren't your typical FPS...
@aRandomMole Are sequels to games that already took that initial risk. That's why we have so many Marios and Zeldas and even Assassin's Creeds, because they took that risk and it payed off. It's safe for them to make a sequel to an established game. Do you think Skyrim would be half as successful it has been if it weren't a sequel? Like it or not, gaming is a business, and publishers and developers are still out to make money. To make a successful original game you need deep pockets in today's..
@aRandomMole Market, it just doesn't pay off to spend millions developing an original idea/game and possibly not even make your initial investment back on it when you can play it safe and give the people what sells. If we want new and original ideas, you have to tell them through your wallet. Money talks, and MW3 selling over 6 million copies on the Xbox 360 alone in a short amount of time doesn't exactly help anything.
I would have to totally disagree with this argument. This generation has offered a ton of originality. Granted, they're never going to "remake" gaming because the core of every genre has already been developed but the additions are very unique. If you're looking strictly for unique ideas the motion control, Kinect, & 3D handheld w/no glasses are this generations unique developments. They're pretty remarkable advancements, most just don't like this form of uniqueness.
@DlNKYDANA I think a lot of the motion stuff from this gen is playing on stuff from the 80s. Powerpad to DDR, Powerglove to wiimote, Virtualboy to everything 3d. 3d itself was used in the 60s. I don't think any real new ideas have been brought up just done remarkable better. They have perfected what was once a good idea done poorly but the idea was still there before. I'll agree that everything has been done already but with all these advancements I would like to see more innovation in genres.
@DlNKYDANA But I do think that the indie games and marketplaces are a great place that I've seen some unique games which is why I love it. It is a little financial safer to go with what will sell like a shooter but I dont think that you can step forward without taking some risks. I respect your opinion an agree with some of your points.
Never, because Mirror's Edge is absolutely awful. Sequels are here because people like games that improve on a familiar formula. It's all about money. If you don't like the lack of originality, just wait. Shooters will eventually fall off the map like platformers and fighting games.
Shooters sell... Game publishers are less likely to take chances these days and less games in general are created this generation. I think that innovation and originality is far more prevalent on xbla and psn because there's way less risk. I can't wait to pickup Rayman origins but I can guarantee it won't sell well at all.
It' annoying how everyone says they're no original games this generation. It's a common misconception and a bad generalization. Examples of original games this generation: Catherine, Child of Eden, Minecraft, Limbo, Terraria, Stacking, Valkyria Chronicles, Dead Rising, Alan Wake, Little Big Planet, Heavy Rain, El Shaddai, inFamous, Batman Arkham City/Asylum, Dead Island
It's also not true that most games today are shooters. Sure, they're the most popular, but they aren't the majority of games.
@MudoHama Child of Eden is basically a sequel to Rez, Dead Rising is a hack in slash in mall, Batman is a beat em up, LBP is a platformer that you can edit, Heavy rain is successor to Indigo Prophecy, Dead Island is a FPS with rpg elements (very similiar to Borderlands). El Shaddai is a hack in slash. All of this stuff has been seen before and most of those are spiritual successors to other games before. El shaddai and limbo are original in thier presentation. Not thier gameplay.
video games died off after gamecube,ps2,and xbox...........gamers still appreciate it still today BUT look at the retros around 16 bit, everything that was released was a brand new flavor in your mouth to enjoy.......now everything is either:realistic, first perosn aspect, shooters, simulators and sequels to more shooters...........video games have lost me 100% but will truly honor them b4 the ps2,gamecube n xbox.
I totally agree with you. This is why this generation has been the worst Ive played.
Most FPS are nothing but lame but yes I can play COD and I did finish Gears of War 3. I absolutely love Platformers and I hate to say that the genre I haven't seen rarely any games come out for the genre except Ranchet and Clank for the PS3 really.
It is very hard for developers to try for originality and make a lot of money off of it. IF their game doesn't do well then it usually means closure to a study or a big lose in revenue, but if they release sequels then there is not such a huge risk. First person shooter has become over crowded. First person shooters are so easy to just pick up and play, kinda like social media games. People do not wanna sit at their consoles anymore they want easy and multiplayer games.
I'm tired of all four of those things: shooters, remakes, sequels, and those stupid ass collections. Sony took out PS2 backwards compatibility, so now they're re-releasing every PS2 game in a collection. Why? Sly, God of War, Jak & Daxter now, Ico & SotC (which I think actually deserved it, since it wasn't a commercial success), Devil May Cry now, FF X is getting remade. It's sickening. :\ Give it more than just ONE generation to be remade.
@ShyBoy6D9 (cont.) Maybe not TOTALLY original, and it did have a few technical problems, but you know what? It was better than most of the big-budget games. Mass Effect and Dragon Age. Not to hate on them, but I found the main appeal of the games, the conversation wheel, to be more of an annoyance. I know it adds "depth" and everything, but to be honest, I thought it just made the characters and gameplay flat, boring, and generic, like a bargain bin RPG or shooter.
ya you do make some good points people love sequels and shooters and remakes but your right i would like something new to come out of no where and just destroy them all but only time will tell
Dude i totally agree with ya. The only difference between us is that i dont own any shooters. LOL But its all good. I fucking hate shooters. There all the same. Call of Duty is weak simply because their really aren't any characters. your just a soldier. Gears of War is awesome simply because they have CHARACTERS! Nothing creative man. Theres no innovation in creating a new story lines and stuff. Thats why im not really into this current generation of consoles. Ill stick to my 8-128 bit systems.
@GamezOfWar On my xmas list. I hear from everyone that its great and oh yeah the pro reviewers say its good too if anyone looks at that sort of stuff lol.

The whole shooter genre is one of the main reasons why this is my least favorite generation I'm sick of it.
