think it means time at time writing song 25 to 6 or 4am same time when writing a song doesn,t matter what time of morn it is....its early!!! go to bed. lol
I was growing up in the Soviet Union. I do not think there was a hoard of Chicago admireres everywhere then, but there was a very small group of fanatics in the speciallist music school in Kiev, where I studied, & I belonged to it at about 1976-78. Once fallen in love - it is forever! Long live Chicago!
@vichniakov When I was in High School the school was attached to a stadium that was used by the city. The Chargers football team played there and when they were not playing concerts were held there. They were warming up (CTA) awesome. 1976
@SunnyvaleRaider71 Because it's 25 or 26 to 4 - says so right on the record label. The writer said it's a reference to being awake in the wee hours, trying to write a song at 25 or 26 to 4:00 (ie. 3:34 or 3:35 AM). Others have speculated it's a ratio of ingredients for acid; 25/4 or 26/4 or about the number of joints you can roll from a baggie of grass.
@3salamanders It's to different kinds of acid. Not speculation. That's true. Kinda makes sense why he told the press its being awake from 25th hour. But they are different types of LSD. EVERYBODY KNOWS THIS. Cmon brother. Says great things about the band teachers btw to play this at school. I love it. but dont do drugs kids until your at least 24.
So me and my friends are playing this song for our school talent show. Does anybody know where we can get the original score to this song. Not a marching band or jazz ensamble , we want the score that these are playing in this video. Can anybody help me out??
Chicago Sesame Street? If that's how you count the shopkeepers around you way must be robbing you blind every time you need change lol
The title refers to the time being 3.35 or 3.34 AM (ie 25/26 minutes to 4) - Hence the phrase "...at the break of day" and all the references to feeling tired and closing my eyes, etc, etc...

haha i love this song tonight at my concert im playing this and the drummers are freaking beast sounds like an actual rock band --im first chair trumpet so i have to play really hard and i was allowed to add in my own stuff like at 0:43 i get to play that and it sounds so sexy!
Sounds like Led Zeppelin's "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You." Hell, it's even in the same key. Try listening to Zep's song, and then listen to this right after and you'll see what I mean.
Yesss, i love this song. The jazz band at my school got it back in grade 9, but now graduating year grade 11 we're getting a chance to play at the jazz fest downtown, this is on our list of songs ;D
I just showed my 16 year old this song,!all the while he is practicing the (exact same) chords for Led-Zeppelin "Babe I'm gonna leave you". I had the same experience looking through my dads records Twenty years ago. Nice!
@vfgjhj I grew up with this band dude. lol. I know. Don't ask a question, and then criticize the answer! "Who sings 25 or 6 to 4?"... Let me Google that for you! .... it's "Chicago" mate.
@pistolpete426p the band has multiple singers, songs are sung by different singers within the band, he was probably knowledgeable about that and wanted to know which one of the singers sang it.
@pistolpete426p oops srry, didn't realize the guy was a complete idiot lol, srry. But yeah, which singer of the band sings this? is what I'd like to know lol
@vfgjhj then why ask the question in the first place? C'mon now. Yes, the band is called "Chicago" because they began, in "Chicago".... like I said, the link title above is, "Chicago - 25 or 6 to 4" because... THE BAND'S NAME IS --- CHICAGO. Thumbs up please if you agree. I'm getting tired of explaining this for the 4th time. lol
@XxTheAmandaxX it might be that way on an alternate writing, but it's in the key of A Aeolian, most scores are in differen't keys so it's easier to play.
@carebearnmbr46 The title is talking about the time of day. (25 mins to 4:00 or 26 mins to 4:00). Some people also believed that the title was talking about drugs, but the person who wrote said it was only the time of day. :)
Always thought it was about drugs LSD-25....should I try and do somemore? Don't want to lose touch with reality ;-) Waiting for the break of day.....LOL I have no idea what they're talking about
@iluvmusic354 yeah Chicago consisted of 1 trumpet, 1 trombone, 1 tenor sax, electric guitar, piano, and drums. small band but they were good and loud. the band i am in the citrus heights community marching band(based in citrus heights california) is performing this song at multiple venues over the duration of this year.
@me9100 It's a good song for a marching band. Appalachian State played this, You can Call Me Al and Lucretia McEvil during the haltime show at the 2007 Michigan game.
I only wish their band had more members so it would have been easier to hear.
Listen to Babe I'm Gonna Leave You off their first album(Led Zeppelin I), the riff is exactly the same. That album came out in 1969, this came out in 1970.
@silentsniperrr what? i play trombone which happens to be in this song. i also play tumpet and a lot of other instruments. im just proud of what i do. w...t...f is weird/wrong about that?
@guitarchick150 No. it's about staying up late having to write a song and wanting so desperately to sleep, but you know you have to finish writing the song. So, you do whatever it takes to stay awake "getting up to splash [water on] my face". It's purely about writing lyrics to a song in the late hours and the title is about the time on the clock. Therefore, it's in no way about "drugs". Unless that "dug" you are referring to is "sleep". lol. But seriously, That IS what it's about. Look it up.
@japguy360 ok ok chill haha my music teacher told me its about drugs cuz the guy in the song was so high he didnt know if it was 25 or 6 to 4 haha it could be about sleep idk im just going with what my music teacher said =P no hate
@guitarchick150 - japguy is correct. The song is about musician's writing a song. It is late, he cannot concentrate and is so tired he must splash his face with water to stay awake. He also questions whether he should try to "do some more" writing or just go sleep. He notes the time as 25 or 26 (minutes) until 4am. (It was explained by Robert Lamm, the writer of the song himself). Sorry but your music teacher is mistaken, but many people mistankenly thought the same.
@Umihime that not completely true. It is about writing a song but some thing that "should i try to do some more" is about drugs becasue his writers block is so immense he is wondering if drugs will help his writing. Which he later proved to be true. hah.
This riff is the exact same one from Babe I'm Gonna Leave You by Led Zeppelin, which came out one year before. Both great songs actually but Zeppelin will always rule.
I never understood this edit. Five minute singles were not unknown in 1970, even in the USA, as Simon & Garfunkel had a transatlantic no 1 earlier that year with Bridge Over Troubled Water
Lyrics thought to be drug related...back in the 70s...only because fat christian old ladies had nothing better to do then complain about rock and roll. USA USA USA
i heard this song is about writing a song and staying up late to do so, and the title deals with the time.. 3:34 or 3:35 AM hence the 25 or (2)6 (minutes) to 4 (AM)
The band wrote this song about a huge wildfire in California that took place in 1925. It raged on for almost a month. The fire was so big that that the firemen were lucky to get 4 hours of sleep. 6 hours was considered a great nights sleep. It became known as the fire of 25 or the 6-4 fire. Listen to the lyrics closely.
@AwwwMuffin What the hell are you on. Robert Lamm even admitted that it was about staying up late thinking of lyrics to a song. Stay off the meth dude.
I was lucky to find this. I heard it on the radio again and I had to listen to find out the name of the song. I had been wanting to hear it again, but all I could remember was that superhero-like little music part.

I never understood this edit. Five minute singles were not unknown in 1970, even in the USA, as Simon & Garfunkel had a transatlantic no 1 earlier that year with Bridge Over Troubled Water

i heard this song is about writing a song and staying up late to do so, and the title deals with the time..

25 is the compound for LSD, and 6-4 is approxmately how long an acid trip is supposed to last...

I was lucky to find this. I heard it on the radio again and I had to listen to find out the name of the song. I had been wanting to hear it again, but all I could remember was that superhero-like little music part.
