@Douglas12982 It does have odd ballistics, it was designed as a fast replacement for the 450 N.E. when certain countries like Ethiopia and India banned its use (and ownership I think). The 450 was and is a awesome round for elephant and cape buffalo. While the 470 makes a great stopping rifle as you said, it was designed for elephant and hippo.
not sure if you're retarded or just trolling. Normal guns would just shoot a hole in the jug with minimal splash. 470 destroys the bucket and sends water a good 10 feet in the air. Don't believe me? Try shooting an elephant with a 40 pistol, good luck.
@bwhitepwns Well, I am not wanting to prove anyone wrong or argue, BUT it really depends on the type of bullet. Define "normal gun"? I mean, a Desert Eagle, 50AE with a hollow point bullet meant for cutting and shredding would actually have a similar effect with the amount of muzzle energy it releases and the sheer power of the round. Now, you're right about a 9mm, 40, probably a 45ACP wouldn't do as much either. However, the bullets if hollowpoint, would NOT just make a tiny hole. They shred.
@NastyBuilt What you hunt in Africa with a 40 Pistol? what the fuck is a 40 pistol? Its like saying a 45. Are you gonna go up to an elephant with a .40 something cartage and prod it? Specifics and proof are something we need, all you end up doing is either graze shots or wound the animal causing you to hunt it down and finish the job. If I recall a pissed off elephant is harder to stop then a pissed off Coyote.
My dad, God rest his soul, had a .450/400 elephant gun which I shot once and only once. We had a target backstop of 8" thick railroad ties. I swung the crosshairs on the target.... and woke up a minute later with The Bells of St Mary's chiming in my head. The bullet went THROUGH 8" of hard wood!!!
Ammo is roughly $200 a box! A little much to be shooting a water jug! A 50bmg is cheaper and more powerful!! A 50bmg rifle $3000 start out compared to that double rifle $10000 plus ammo is $50 a box compared to the $200!
The .470NE has weird ballsitics. I think it's a defensive cartridge designed to stop charging water buffalo at closer ranges.
