Thanks for uploading this song. It was one of my favorites in 1981 and still stands out as one of the most haunting and realistic tunes about a relationship on the very brink. Just beautiful! I hope you're enjoying your retirement, Saxa!
I remember playing the cassette over and over, and the heartache of the CD not having it. Finally had my brother find it and send it to me. Not on itunes, nor amazon, and zune. Love it, love it, love it. Thank you
This song is so good! I really wish there were bands like The Beat around. The Two Tone era was such a great time for music. Would you by any chance be able to send an MP3 of it?
The English Beat at it's best ..... Used to blast this out from my bedroom when I was a kid ..... What a pity it seems to get overlooked on all the Beat CDs I've ever come across ?
Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this incredible song. The last time I heard it was just before I set my "What is Beat" tape on the dash of my car, took a turn a little too fast and out the window it went. LOVE this song!
Great Song !!! I have the Cassette of " What is Beat ". And copied to my C. D. Recorder, transfered that to my Computer and now it is in my I-Pod . Yeah ! My I-Pod connects Directly to my Alpine Car Stereo ! So yeah, it sounds Great.....
They had a way of working on singles, so when you here their tracks you cant help to smile, dance and just feel good and even think. Rare band to mix socio-political and relational content
This was an unlisted bonus track on the cassette version of What is Beat? in the US. It wasn't even printed on the playlist but appeared on the cassette anyway. On the vinyl of the same album it wasn't there. It has ALWAYS been my favorite Beat song and I'm a huge fan!! Just hearing this and it's summer in the early 80's again, backseat of a Plymouth Valiant, sandy beach road......you can guess the rest. ;) How do I get the mp3??? My ipod screams for this!!!
@kind2311 wow this song brings me back...ive been looking for it for years...to the point where i thought i might have made it up....i would love to have this song!! reminds me of my first date on the bus with my boots and braises...classic!!!!!! can you help?????
Interesting, my 1983 cassette of "What Is Beat?" does list this track. Can anyone confirm if Which Side Of The Bed is included as an unlisted track in the CD "What Is Beat?" The reviews I've read notes that Pyschedelic Rockers is no longer on the CD but do not mention Which Side Of The Bed. Arrrrrgh!
@982Munchie. I do remember having this on "What Is Beat?" on vinyl but I seem to remember that it was an import version of the album. I don't remember it being on the US version on vinyl or cassette.
@radioelvis Thanks to whomever put it up as you've solved a mystery. I've these guys 20 times or so dating back to 1981 or 1982 and when I saw them in Boston last August, they played a song which I didn't recognize and thought maybe it was new. It was, in fact, this song so "hard-to-find b-side" is probably an understatement as because took 30 years for me to find out. Go Feet!!
@radioelvis Thanks to the person who put it up. Despite seeing them 20 times or so since 1981, I had no idea it existed until today and I've got things like The Special Bodysnatching Selector Beat Live in Okinowa. Ok, so I exaggerated for dramatic effect and it's Special Beat Live In Japan but hard-to-find is certainly accurate. Like Emelia Earhart hard to find for me. Thanks.
Awesome post. Thought I knew every Beat song but somehow missed this one. Excited to see the U.S. version of the touring band with Dave Wakeling just announced a show here today.
I so wish that they would put this out again. I think I have a cassette of it somewhere from MANY years ago. I think this and Walk Away are a couple of awesome relationship (or the end thereof) songs. Long live The Beat!!!
Just found this on 12" for $2 in perfect condition...in America! I didn't even know that this record existed. What a score, this song's amazing. "Hit It"...not so good. Go feet!
I've been looking for this song for years. Thank you for putting it on here. Can I get a copy of the mp3? I can't find it anywhere. I just bought the "What is beat" cassette because that's where I remembered hearing it but the song is not listed. Thank
My Space just allowed 4 more downloads so we have this song back on the page now. It was never on any of the albums but was the B side to Hit It. (Which is why it is so hard to find)
damm i love this song is their anyway i can download it ??? or buy it or something i looked every where for it = ( well at least i can hear it on youtube =D
Thanks everyone for your great comments. I really want to remove this version and upload one with better sound but I've got all these wonderful comments that I don't want to delete and I also don't want to have to re-do the lyrics in Windows Move Maker again ; ) lol. So enjoy for now and please leave a comment when I re-post the video.
My absolutely fave Beat tune and one that I forced my band to play over and over during rehearsals...f**k me, what a great post...forever in your debt...
great thanks for the comment. Your enjoyment is good enough for me to know I have done my job here. If you have a video or mp3 of your band covering this song I'd love to see it!
I cannot believe this song has never made it onto one of their Greatest Hits...as far as I know, this is only available on the cassette version of "What Is Beat?", and as the b-side on the "Hit It" 7". Truly rare indeed...thank you for uploading this.
I agree and I never even heard it before.
