Usually I start by just marking out the head measurements. I got this idea because of the material I'm going to be using for the armature.
There are some great how to disks out there by a guy who sculpts figures for movies. Sculpture With John Brown, produced by Gnomon Workshop and Design Studio Press. You should google it. You'd love them. It's how he starts.. sorta. lol
