Temple Grandin has given me much hope that I didnt have before that my son with Aspergers can and will grow up to do great things. Not understanding Autism scared me into thinking that it would be too hard for him. Thank you
i hear music very well, and i usually focus more on the notes people make when they talk more than the words. sometimes its hard to make out words, especially when there are other constant sounds that interfere.
I had my hearing checked as I could not hear conversations and everybody else could! Only now listening to temple do I find that a lot of other Aspies have the same problem.
someone made fun of me for likeing her and then they told me she killed horses and made me belive she did and they were really mean and they lied to me
When I first saw this video about a year and a bit ago, this was just after being diagnosed with Aspergers, I took this video the wrong way because I did not know temple had autism, I just assumed she was like some person who thinks she knows a lot about something - making bold assertions.
I was very wrong about her, I guess I was kinda rebelling in my own way, I still act very much like a teenager sometimes and I'm nearly 27. I saw the movie based on her, I found it inspirational, great video
Awesome. She is so insightful and I love the way she trusts her OWN instincts about things instead of what so-called experts claim. I tend to do the same thing and it ALWAYS works better for me too. Nobody can know you better than yourself....except maybe Temple Grandin!
She was spectacular. Thanks so very much for putting this video together. We need all the insight and personal experience, as is expressed by Ms. Grandin, because as of yet there are many misinformed people out there concerning autism. Thanks again.
Thank you for offering insight for Parents, individuals on the Autism Spectrum, as well as, medical, educational and service providers for people with Autism.
Wfat a fantastic insight into Autism and Asperges! And what a fantastic lady, I really felt that she not only shared her own experiances but that she has looked into all the research and observed! Thank you this is going to give me a great starting point in helping my child who at 13 has just been diagnosed!
Temple Grandin, your amazing and i look up to you and i love you for what your doing. i have mild autism like you and i have always felt isolated in my life. my friends have moved on and im still stick in time (no boyfriend, no children). im trying to find my gift but i cant find it and sometimes i feel like there is more problems that my parents havent told me.
Thank you so much for this lecture and all of the work you do. I have a Daughter who is 26 with Autism who is rarely verbal. Over the years, your work has taught me so much that she could not tell me. Thank you so much Ms. Grandin.
I can only imagine the discomfort people with autism and ones with asperger's endure in daily life. Loud noise, flashing lights, color etc. And the ridicule and laughing by people who think it's fun to ridicule and make another human being feel uncomfortable. Thanks to Temple people with the above problems have more tools and knowledge to help them live in the world. God bless all of you.
Very informative and helpful. You make it plain as day to see there are very specific ties between Autism, ADHD..ie..picture thinking. Grandson, autism, daughter ADHD/dyslexia, me..who knows but I AM a picture thinker with math genius. Excellent show. Straight forward and ahead of where they are right now with Autism in mainstream America
I am a fan of Temple and I was quite happy to find her video on here. From one advocate to another, thank you Temple, and keep fighting the good fight! I shall be right behind you, with many others!
There is social game I have unfortunately begun to see about in the 'norm' world, a Emperor's New Clothes phenomenon. Sometimes people stand up and say something when something is wrong and other times they do not. There is no consistency. It seems that sometimes a victimized person or animal gets sympathy and other times they do not and social factors and timing often play a big part in determining if the harmed creature gets any help.
This game makes me sick. I have Asperger's Syndrome.
Absolutely, Emily! The only way I can rationalise it is that some people have the courage to speak up, and some people don't. The lack of consistency may be maddening, but it is related more to individual abilities to express what is wrong with the situation than any hypocrisy.
I am also proud of hainvg Aspergers, even though I was deying that I had it. But now I am happy and have a rich and vried life. I have a grilfriend and I am a uncle to my borthers son. So don't think your life is over if you have this or a slimlar condtion.
What a remarkable lecture. My entire life i have always had a unique way of seeing life and learning and interpreting things in my own little way. Although i have many things i am extremely successful at i suffer with the bad most people don't see. I feel much better knowing that there are different degrees of uniqueness every individuals brain has and i agree with focusing on the good and expanding that. Very inspirational, thank you for putting complicated thoughts in practical sense.
know dr stephen mccullough who works at salk institute. he is deaf and has aspergers. he is very fond of neurology. he is comfortable in the research world, but is uncomfortable socially
Amazing speaker! Brilliant and to the point. Much of what she says doesn't only apply to people on the autistic spectrum. Everybody needs to be understood, cared for, and have strengths built upon. We need to focus on developing the children we have and not the child we think we should have.
Well, be careful not to fall into autistic supremacy. We aren't better at everything than average people. We just have more dynamics in our skills, whereas those of average people are more evenly displaced.
My daughter has Asperger's syndrome and also ADHD and I have had to FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT for diagnosis, for medical help and for understanding and for suitable education, Let's hope things can change.
I have aspergers and a lot of the things she mentions in this video I had no idea were connected to my syndrome. When I was a boy I would start bawling the second my mother brought me into a supermarket, and not stop until we left. A few years ago I went to a rock concert that had blinking strobe lights, and I had to spend half the concert holding my hands over my eyes because the lights drove me crazy. I've never had any problems with audio and music, though; I'm always listening to rock music.
That's my worst sensory problem, sound. Next to touch. Other than that, tasting and smelling is all good. Seeing too. Lights don't bug me, nor the florescent ones.
The lopsided skills part makes a lot of sense. I have in the last year been diagnosed with Aspergers, and when I was in middle school they found out my reading level was first year college, but my math was below average.
Temple Grandin opens a new and important window on autism - how autistic people perceive, and then how they earn. This is so basic as to be almost ludicrous. Some high functioning autistics can all be "mainstreamed", but others cannot. The approach must never be "blanket remedies' although many autistic kids do possess common learning challenges. But each must be treated individually, with stimulation based on a particular child's strengths and learning deficits. Bless you, Dr. Grandin!
A truly inspirational lady. Thank goodness for people like Prof. Grandin. I think my son may be Aspergers and this information has be extremely valuable. Brilliant!!
I don't think that matters. However, in my opinion, I don't think she is savant. I think she is passionate about her work and her brain is programmed differently than neurotypicals. Any other opinions?
Many thanks and God Bless to Ms. Grandin. Our nearly 14 yr old son finally received his official Asperger's diagnosis last week, but we had known for years that there was more to his ADHD diagnosis, sensory integration issues, etc. He, we and his teachers identify greatly with Ms. Grandin, and can't thank her enough.

My son and I both are have Asperger's Syndrome.
The latest research on Austism and Asperger's is that they are different conditions.
I have no problems with loud noises: I find engine noises rather exciting actually.
My son and I have a need to clarify and classify any information we come across.
Muddle and formless information is stressful to us.
I am currently reading Temple Grandin's books.
Great to have some-one with an "inside view" writing about the condition rather researcher!
