When Adam gets a critical hit, when Karna promotes to MasterMonk, when synbios does his Lv.3 special... that's when I look the modern JRPG in the eyes, straight face and all, and say: "You're... you're just fine... with your token/obvious love interests, copy past "world be in danger" story and using fanservice as main sell.

@TwistedWinds64 I don't think JRPG's have become bad at all, I just think a certain popular franchise that's one of the most well-known in the genre gives the whole genre a bad name. There's still plenty of great JRPG devs like Atlus (their games are incredibly complex in mechanics and story/themes) and Gust to name some, and even Squeenix still makes decent games now and again.

The original is from the era where imagination still played a major role in gaming (though it would be a bit of a stretch with the Black Belt/Monk- even female bodybuilders hyped on testosterone injections don't typically look like that without plastic surgery). Giving the WM a female auto-name was due to fans thinking "long hair = girl" and "healing = nurturing = girl." I thought all classes were male when I was a kid

Monk - Arvis: He outranks the party in damage with his fists. He's also incredibly intelligent. Can be either Ayla or Robo, although he is preferredly a male.

Red Mage - Tot: He can use a variety of weapons, but is not as skilled with a sword as Banon or Doma. He is a mage of decent power. Fits Magus, although Magus can only use dark magic.

Last time I played through the game I got by with 4 red mages. Even though they were all red mages, their stats varied greatly. Ended up doing the usual two warriors, two magicians route no matter what their classes were. And of course near the end of the game, one warrior and two, some times three healers. (GBA version, maybe the PSP version is different)
