I've just bought this pedal and I'm very satisfied of how it works! But I've got a question: when I turn the SUSTAIN knob all the way down, the tone gets higher and sharper (the contrary, if i set it all the way up, of course); is it the same thing with the SENSITIVITY/THRESHOLD knob of other compressor pedals (MXR, Boss, etc.)? Thanks to the first answerer!!!
After watching the vid, I bought this pedal off of craigslist. I'm glad I bought it ($50). The only thing this video doesn't express is how much that it will color the sound of the amp, even when volume is in the 1/4 to 1/2 range. When at jamming volume, it's obvious when engaging the pedal, due to true bypass and coloration. Although the chicken pickers here only want the compressor for poultry, it will sustain a note nicely, and soften transition between from chord to single note solo.
A very nice reveiw Paul. It's great to see someone finally put up a review of a compressor who's not just strumming chords or showing me how long a note will sustain. That's the last thing in the world anyone needs a compressor for. It's all about hammer-ons, pull-offs, harmoncs, pinched harmoncs, slapped harmonics, tapped notes, or anything else that normally is hard to get much volume doing. It makes the guitar so much easier to play. You're the first guy I've seen who gets it.
so for someone who plays blues and rock is this something that im looking for? I would like my licks to be smoother and i guess louder. in comparison to chords that is. and for the chords i just dont want them to over power my licks. what do you suggest?
@AnthonHarvey18 A compressor will mainly smooth out the difference in volume between the strings, limit your dynamics range, and increase the sustain (how much for each depends on the compressor). When you're playing licks, it'll keep the volume of the notes generally a little more consistent. However, single notes just won't be the same volume as chords - there's not as much sound, period. If your chords overpower your single note riffs, you should work on your technique or use a boost pedal.
@AnthonHarvey18 Very few blues guys use a compressor. This video showed you pretty well what a compressor does best about halfway in when he played some country licks involving a lot of hammer-ons and pull-offs. Normally you would have to dig into the fretboard very hard to do pull-offs. A compressor brings the levels up for you though so you don't have to work at it so hard. Same with things like tapped notes and harmonics. It makes them easier to do and the notes just jump off the fretboard.
Yeah, EMGs for country, jazz too. You kids are too young to remember such things as the Les Paul Recording -- a guitar with low impedance pickups, designed for going straight into the board. All an active EMG is is a low impedance pickup like they had on the recording, with the high impedance converter built in the circuit. Sounds good, know? Les Paul had a clue when it came to the electronics side of things. As far as the compressor for county, yes, it brings out the chicken picking.
@Timbertea Nice post! There's actually a video, here on YouTube, of Don Rich playing a Les Paul Recording. Search: Buck Owens and Don Rich - Above and Beyond.
One of the best if not the best test on this pedal I have seen,It highlights all the plus of this excellent cheap little monster ! Thanks for posting it
DO NOT GET THE NANO CLONE! i'm serious...i took it home, and do what i do for every new pedal i get. stomp it. i do so, and the switch breaks into the pedal! FIRST TRY. the nano stone works for me though :)
Seriously _doubt it_. That heavy duty switch just smashed right down through the cast aluminum case huh? Like it was made out of thin plastic ? These pedals are rugged - if you got a lemon, go get it replaced.
that might be either due to the camera causing a very very very slight delay to the guitar amp (like when two tv's are on together but have that little delayed stereo thing) that causes it to have a doubled chorus like effect effect.
I found out about a week after I wrote that, that there is an internal pot that controls the amount of Boost/Cut that it had....I ended up selling it because I still did not like it.

I'm glad Yingwie Malmsteen, and Ritchie Blackmore didn't pay attention when some ass hole told them they can't play classical runs on a strat.

I just go this pedal used, but it cuts about a third of the volume when you switch it on. Does anyone else have this problem?
Crash171 3 years ago
no. you might wanna throw it somewhere else in your chain or crank the volume more.
vlagtr 3 years ago
almost forgot. Maybe lower the sustain too. The more sustain u have the more volume is gonna cut out when u engage it. I almost forgot about that.
