It's great that you've got this lens, it really is a good one. But you need to base your reviews on some research instead of guesswork. It has no weather sealing at all, the rear barrel is indeed metal not plastic (I know... I cracked mine!), there's no mention of performance info such as flare, contrast, focusing speed etc. And instead of saying you didn't buy the IS or f2.8 version because you didn't need it, just be honest and say it is beyond your budget... there's nothing wrong with that!!
the non-IS version of this lens is tack sharp compared to the f2.8 is II...as long as you have the right amount of light to keep the speed up and avoid camera shake.
You can easily use f4 indoors if you have a camera with a good sensor like the 5d mkII, 7d or 60d. Just turn up that iso and maybe a bit of bounce flash.
@TheNickloyd T2i is fine. The t2i shares the same sensor with it's bigger brothers, the 60d and 7d. It is by far the most bang for your buck, if you can deal with the cheaper built quality of the rebel series. After all this guys seems like a young guy on a budget.
This version and IS has nothing same except than 70 - 200 length and the color. Buing this lence is waste of money if you ask me. The one with IS is way better in any way. Great for home-studio and portraits and almost anything as it is 70-200. WIth 1.4 extender is perfect. What comes to having 2.8 version of this...my friend has a Sigma 70-200 2.8 and I would propably get that over Canon 2.8 any time as it's as sharp as Canon and half the price and out of focus is better looking.
This IS the cheapest L lens you can get but it is NOT like a typical L lens. First of all, the difference between this and the IS is huge. The IS version has weather sealing, this one does not. The IS version has more elements as well.
@MrSchoerschken The "L" officially stands for "Luxury", a reference to the lenses' high price and proclaimed build quality. Get your info right smart ass.
@derekagain sorry, i worded it a little wrong. I will be doing Photography at a football match. On a cloudy day, would the f/4 be fine do you think? What kinds of shutter speeds and noise on the actual picturre do you get on a cloudy day with this lens?
Thats really hard to say, because it depends how cloudy it is and what time of the day Usually if its day time, you shouldnt have any trouble shooting with f4 low iso and fast shutter in cloudy weather But if its cloudy, and evening-ish you might have to start bumping up the iso Unless you run into those really nasty storm clouds, i think this lens would get your pictures with reasonable noise and shutter Shutter and iso will depends how much light you get so i cant give numbers
Hey, just a question... how old are you? You look pretty young and you did a great review on this lens! Im planning to get the IS version of this lens :D
@derekagain Cool, im 13, the f2.8 IS II is the best 70-200 from Canon, but I can't afford that one... the best 70-200 I can afford is the 70-200 f/4 L IS USM. I also don't want to carry a lot of weight when I travel :D Hope you get you 70-200 2.8 IS II... btw, Im also from toronto... where in Toronto are you? Also, do you think it's ridiculous that I have a Canon 60d as a 13 year old and getting a 70-200?
The lens is actually light enough to be just mounted by the camera itself. But it is a nice feature to be able to turn from portrait to landscape quickly with the tripod mount. I would say just get one off ebay since it's like $7 lol
@jacklen123 I would recommend the f/2.8 because you'll be able to shoot nicely exposed picture even with less amount of light. Also with f/2.8, because it takes in more light, you could set a higher shutter speed which means a picture that would be less affected by shaking / movement. But at 200mm, you'll still need to pay attention for camera shake The only reason i can think of where i would choose the f/4 is over the f2.8 is if you really have shaky hands and you're mostly shooting out door.
ok thanx man! I fine adjust the lens on my 5D Mark II and now is sharp as the razors blade :) If I shoot in raw, I can put some sharpness there to so ....beautiful lens !!!!
hm, so I have the 7D and 5D mark II bodyes. On each camera have the posibility to adjust the back or front focus point. I'see on my picture that the focus point is ok on both camera. What can I do to have this sharpeness? Like on my 50 mm 1.4 ?
@floryka I personally think it is. But then it also depends on how well the lens match with your camera body. Cause when lenses and bodies are made they're allowed to be off by a certain bit. So if your body is, say, -2, and your lens is +2, then it won't be sharp as if they were the same number.
nicr review,,, just wanna ask what u shoot with this lens? becoz i rarely use tripod but the IS is a lot more expensive to me. and Is it good for shooting bird?
For birds you'll have no problem as long as your outside (lots of light available). In fact if you're taking pictures of flying birds, having the IS or not won't make too much difference as it is Shutter speed that will count. But if you're taking pictures of birds in an indoor environment (zoos for example), you might have a little trouble as there is less light available.
I used it to shoot the moon and portrait with this lens. i no longer have it cause im upgrading it for the 2.8L
For the most part of the video, i use my Canon T2i to record (using either my Canon 50mm f1.8 or Sigma 20mm f1.8). For the part where i mounted it on my T2i, i used the panasonic DMC ZS7.
@derekagain Wow its amazing the quality you can get with a video capable DSLR and a sharp lens.I should have known because of the manual foucs.Hope you do more reviews like this, and btw Im considering buying this lens so your vid was truely helpful.
I believe that if you have the money, the IS one would do you better since it is a f4 lens after all. So with the IS you could slow down the shutter speed to take a better picture in slightly lower light.
Yup compared to the f 2.8, the f4 is a lot lighter and easier to carry.
I just got into photography and dslr film making in the past oct-nov. so i wasn't sure if i'm actually interested, which is why i go the rebel. Now I'm already saving up for the 5d Mark III. Just waiting for it to be announced :P

However, if this focal length is right for you, i do suggest you get the f2.8 if you're shooting indoor. but remember, the f 2.8 is about double the price of this lens

What the pro's actually do is they send in their body/bodies and their lens(es) to canon to be adjusted to match perfectly.
Theres an article about this issue at CanonRumours (The top tab that says "This lens is soft")

im really into wedding photography. so would this lens do great indoors? (i dont have enough money to get the f2.8 lens)
mervie17 10 months ago
@mervie17
I personally would not want to use this lens as it is too slow. But i've used this indoor with a speedlight flash and it performs really well.
but if you don't have a flash, or good lighting indoor, i wouldn't really recommend this lens.
if you don't need the zoom though, there are quite a few prime lenses that have larger apature and within the 70-200mm range for about the same price.
derekagain 10 months ago

for indoor shots, you do need to either increase the iso or decrease the shutter speed, because of the f4. Also for the most part, this focal range is a little too long for indoor shots.
