ian sure doesnt have the same power he used to, but you gotta give the guy a break. the way he sang before he was pushing ALOT of air, he had a powerful voice. everyone gets old I guess
i saw them a few years ago at a hit and miss show ... this is what happens to singers when they get old and out of shape ... doesnt happen to all ... just those who let themselves go ... he needs a singing/breathing coach or they wont even last on the touring cirucit
are you kidding me? he sounds amazing. I think they sound better today than in the 80's and early 90s. obviously all these amazing songs (not just firewoman) were wrote in the 80's, but he Ian Astbury doesn't get enough credit as one of the all time greats...he is. check out his song Ghost with Slash...keep rockin folks
1:01..."dancing like a flame..." that's the one point in the song he hits that A minor clearly. If I were him I would conserve my voice by not even ATTEMPTING to do some of the short screams. He's not off time though; he's attempting to conserve his voice by starting lines late, etc. Every singer does this. But he shouldn't try some of those short screams; they are wimpy and just weaken his voice for when he needs it.
Two things a singer shouldn't do: drugs, and get older. :)
It's silly to expect to hear live what you hear on a studio recoding. Even in the early 90's, when Ian was still in his prime, he didn't sing this in concert like you hear it on the CD. In the studio they do pitch adjustments, they can "cut & paste" a re-take over a bad "patch" of song, they can artificially extend a note, add chorus, delay, & other effects, etc. Plus, in this recording he's, what, in his mid-40's?
But to be fair, his voice hasn't held out as well as some others. Go easy on him!
what the hell is wrong with him is he so out of breath he can't sing all the words ?that is so pathetic it sounds like someone is punching him in the stomach if i went to this concert i would ask for a refund
hahahaha!! canadians suck!! hahahaha!! I bet I get a load of them whinging at me now, they LOOOVVVVEEE to whinge and whine, fucking canadians....hahahaha!!!!
The vocals are lackluster on this because he can't carry the entire tune before losing breath, he misses the mark on his timing, and he looks like Jean Reno from Loverboy. Sad!
Ian has a amazing voice, but I saw him perform live in the late '80's he was worse with the words...too fucked up. He does seem out of breath here....
Musicians are really good but even if I love Ian Astbury, he's really out of breath on this song. He souldn't jump around the stage. Really sad... But the studio version is incredible.
@touffmorrison Sadly, you're right. Whatever the reason was, his voice on this song is pretty much gone. Just as 'Rain' on this very concert. Which highlights the problem of the vocalist, who sooner or later is the one really affecting live performances, as their voices tend to go away. Something that does not affect this bad the other members.
The problem is that he is jumping around too much and he is not in shape for that and singing. If he didnt jump around so much he could probably catch enough breath so that he didnt have to break up his singing so much.
Thats my opinion.
But his voice is still there he just needs to hold down on the moving.
yeah thats him. this song came out in the early 80s so i guess your voice can give out after all that time singing. but then again, maybe he is just sick of singing this song over and over lol.
I am waiting for the lead singer to have an alcohol or drug induced stroke. Ian is his name? I don't know much about The Cult, but I LOVE this song. I have watched about 5 newer versions of it now on You Tube, and not one of them is good. He barely sings. What's up? If anybody has a better version of Fire Woman let me know.
it's not his age, that's for sure. he's off cause he had bad sound monotoring - he couldn't hear things right. that's obvious to abyone who know something about the cult, music and live sound.
Come on guys, Give Ian some slack. His voice isnt going to sound the same as 20 years ago or like on the album. At least he gets out most of the words in this one. And doesnt cut off in the "FIIIRRRREEEE" part so much. Everything else is all good. Ian should perhaps run on the tredmill a bit, to build up his cardio, and therefore have more breath to sing.
All in all, a good attempt, Ian needs some improving.
so frustrating to hear Ian butcher this tune so badly. Constantly sounds like he's out of breath.. his vocal intonation is totally off, never comes in when he should.. sounds like he forgets the lyrics almost. Does the same thing in the other vids posted here of Fire Woman. arghh.. the record is SOOO Good too. pffffft.
Ofcourse gothic hard rock, well, that's how they started out in the 80's. No reason to be and profane here. Love Ian, but he needs to condition his voice a bit and do this one ealier in the set so he's not so tired for apowerful song like this. Still love 'em! Thanks for posting this!
