Bill Murray improvised the “Cinderella story” sequence from two lines of stage direction. Director Harold Ramis simply asked Murray to emulate a kid announcing his own fantasy sports moment. Murray simply asked for four rows of ‘mums and did the scene in one take.
Fact: The scene where Carl and Ty are talking in Carl’s “house” was almost entirely improvised between Bill Murray and Chevy Chase.
I like how he hit's 2 iron 100 yards, 5 iron 150 yards, and then holes out from 195 with an 8. Must be some wicked dog legs on that hole to require those kinda lay up shots..
That whole scene was all ad-lib (making it up) all Bill Murray. In fact the whole movie Murray's charater was not supposed to have alot of lines i know Dali lama and this one was all Murray.
@hbdywtk It's funny because it's spoofing the commentators that call golf tournaments, plus he's uses 100 golf cliche's in a 1 minute stretch, is dressed like a moron, and is imagining himself playing a round of golf at Augusta all while beating the crap out of the pathetic little flowers with a gardening tool at an upcale country club...all completely improvised and made up on the spot...pretty genious...look up the Gunga Galunga scene, if that's not funny to you, I feel sorry for you...
@dmb3305 thanks for the explanation. It's probably because I know nothing about golf that I didn't see all that and don't generally like Caddyshack. I like other movies of that genre. I love Fletch for example.
@Dreamy839: While you're writing your "stern letter", how about you grab a dictionary and learn to spell "horrible". Proper spelling and grammar will allow you to accurately display your displeasure with the destruction of flowers.
All i can think about is the poor flowers. My god its just awful watching them die. What is wrong with you people? Flowers are buitifull things. Its horable i have a good mind to write a stern letter and voice my opinion.
I love how the imaginary announcer knew it was his "last shot" before he even took it, yet didn't know for sure whether he had tears in his eyes or not as he lined it up.
(tongue in cheek) it's funny, his first "shot" was 455 yards, he used a 2-iron, and he "got all of that one", but it only went 105 yards! And his second shot, which he also "got all of" with the 5-iron, only went 155 yards. I mean, come on, Carl! At least say you were behind a tree or in a lake or something! (just kidding, this is still hysterical, I'm just being anal, don't take this post for anything serious).
@KingsFan9987 think bubba MIGHT be able to get it that far. back then their 8-iron was closer to a 9 or even a PW for today's standards. plus, the balls and clubs have come a LONG way technologically speaking. you can bunt a driver 200 yards nowadays. try to do that with a persimmon and a balata.
@machetero1 pretty much every Bill Murray role you hear a story about how he improvised it, and I don't doubt any of them. The guy's just a comedic genus, shame he's somewhat stopped caring.
Love this freakin' movie. Best cast of all time. My mom and sisters all own copies. We used to watch it every Christmas. You know, instead of It's a Wonderful Life.
He's got to be pleased with that one the crowd is just on there feet here at Augusta he's a Cinderella boy got tears in his eyes I guess, as he lines up this last shot he got about 195 yards left he's looks like he got about 8iron this crowd has gone deadly silent Cinderella story out of no where former greens keeper now about to become the Masters champion it looks like a miraculous 'ITS IN DA HOLE ITS IN DA HOLE ITS IN DA HOLE
Greatest golf comedy of all time? I believe so, and here's why. If you've seen thr movie, it is impossible to play a round of golf without quoting it. Meanwhile, I've never heard anyone quote Happy Gilmore on the golf course.
what you guys don't get is I'm not saying Bill Murray isn't awesome in this movie, because he is. He's unbelievable in it. I laugh my ass off everytime I find it on tv. Chevy Chase is good too. But the movie as a whole, is so overrated. I mean doesn't anyone else realize how badly it skips around to these pointless storylines? Like what's the point of the pool scene? Or the subplot of Danny and his gf? It's not funny and rather annoying. All I'm saying is the movie is no better than two stars.
@ADion03 I agree with you here. I think there's a conversation in the tv show Freaks and Geeks that explains it best. That there are some amazing scenes that are really funny, but you can't tell me what happens in the middle of that movie, because it's boring and all over the place. All the Bill Murray scenes are outstanding, Rodney Dangerfield is great but after seeing the movie a few times now, those are the only parts that stick out.
@atork88 Exactly. And I'm not trying to lessen any of the great performances by Murray, Smaels and even Chase, but to say that Caddyshack holds up as one of the best comedies not even the best, to me, is just ridiculous. The movie as a whole is garbage. Two stars at best.
If you want to see a great comedy that features outstanding comedic performances, quotable lines, etc. and a story that flows, Dumb and Dumber is that movie. Best comedy of all time in my opinion.
@ADion03 I'm sorry I can't at all agree with you there. Dumb and Dumber is no where near my favorite comedies list, I really don't like that movie at all and the Farrelly brothers are terrible directors. I'd probably watch Caddyshack over Dumb and Dumber any day. For me, the best comedy is Dr. Strangelove, Duck Soup, or Blazing Saddles (probably that order).
@atork88 well everybody has different taste but if you're looking for a comedy film with a great comedic duo (timing, etc. all there), classic moments and quotable lines with a story that doesn't jump around and bore you -- Dumb and Dumber has it all with JC in his prime. I'm not necessarily a big Farrelly bros. fans, but that movie is a gem.
Other great comedies are Ace Ventura 1, Christmas Vacation, Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Wedding Crashers, Old School, Big Daddy and The Big Lebowski.
@ADion03 what?? caddyshack is one of the best comedies of ALL TIME! You wanna talk outstanding comedic performances? More than half this movie is improvised!

Caddy Shack... One of the best sports comedies ever.
@dhz35 It's not even the funniest golf movie of all time. Happy Gilmore is better. The only thing good about Caddyshack is the all of 10 minutes of screen time that Murray gets. That's it. The rest of it is beyond retarded.
