I'm actually not surprised that Carmack's "graduated" from advanced programming to rocket science. A smart person can do anything they put their mind to.
I very much like how the future of space exploration could very well be in private hands instead of in the hands of slow, bureaucratic, inefficient and expensive government agencies like NASA.

You don't understand. A genius is know about many things. A programmer genius can think about very complicated subjects that others can't do. And A polymath talented lots of subjects. And for him thinking about very complicated subject a exercise or motivationing process on her general culture while it needed a hard-working for you. And all of this terms valid for John Carmack. John done several "magnum opus" and you cannot how he do that. So show respect.
