I think plants don't need much C02.Fish produce CO2, and plants at night produce CO2, wich can be consumed by plants during day. I don't use CO2 but do regular water changes + iron, plants are fine.the advantage of CO2 is better algea control. BUT Fish are less healthy with higher CO2 concentrations, it even can cause CO2 intoxication. Okay, CO2 becomes O2 (photosynthes)e, but too much CO2 shall not be consumed by plants. My advise: no or only little CO2 injection, diffuser : not needed.
@godzilar35 what kind of fish do you have also what temp is the water ? im guessing it gets abit of sunlight either from the real sun or lighting ? use a algae removal product but i warn you it may knock about your fish best solution is to buy a pleco they are algae eaters
@godzilar35 you can but id wonder why besides making a cretain look as in theme for your tank sand usally gets moved about a far bit by in tank currents from pumps and such and if your using a pump that sits lower in the tank the is the poss ability of sand being sucked in and you will require cleaning the pump but there is ways around that so overall yes you can but it has to be sand that doesn't contain salt
I have built something very similar. I like your glass piece. I used plastic tube used to cover T12 tube lights to see the bubbles. Mine goes into PVC T fitting under the gravel and out into to PVC tubes into squeezed down PVC pipes which peak out above the gravel. it is a Co2 difuser and a gravel jet to keep the waste suspended.
1) i dont like that there is an actual bubble of air (water dripping down from filter, i dont know why but I would think problems would occur from that, i dont know i just dont like it) but it works, so good job.
honestly if you are trying for just a healthy ecosystem id use air if my system could aerate that much. its gonna be plenty of co2 and also a more natural mix of oxygen and the rest. if you are trying for lots of plant growth then of course CO2... but i like this design for its "violence", lotsa diffusion. a lil big, but with a purpose built smaller glass, or even just a tube into the gravel, i think rather than mess with CO2 id just do that, with air. would be like a pocket waterfall.
Damn that thing is enormous. Regular Co2 diffusers are pretty effecient already, personally I don't see the benefit of adding such a scene killer to my aquarium just for a little extra gas.
if u dont want the eye sore then get a fluval canister and have ur co² inject into the intake and by the time it leaves the canister it is 100% diffused into the water so u arent losing co² canisters work best because u want less surface movement, its where u lose ur co² bty nice macgyver skills
So you have the co2 going into the control hole of the powerhead? The output of the powerhead goes into the tube? How is the powerhead connected to the tube? Is there are cork or did you drill a hole into the glas? What was the tube?
execpt with a diffuser u have no clue how much c02 is goin into the water. it is actually possible for the co2 to reach a lethal level. i just dont like how much space a reactor takes up.
why on earth would u want that huge glass thing taking up so much space in ur tank, its pretty ugly and its not like u have it hidden, get a co2 ladder much smaller and u can actually c how much co2 is goin in tank. cost 20 $ maximum
how can u tell if the co2 is being properly dissolved and the plants are taking it in? i see in many shops that the plants give out little bubbles of oxygen but i dont see any in mine
You need lots of light and fertilizers for the pearling effect. Usually an aquarium with bubbling plants is right on the limit of what is possible and also very hard to maintain into a stable state. If you are a beginner good plant growth and no algae are what you should strive for.
@Meowbay I use 3 algae suckers and 5 snails for algae in a 55 Gal aquarium in constant sunlight. The plants grow like crazy and the algae is under control too. Or you can buy anti-algae pills for your aquarium, those for the most part work as well.
After seeing this, I order the parts to make my own!
Can I ask how you got a good join between the glass of the oil lamp chimney, and the plastic pipe from the power head - I cant quite make it out on the video.
You understand exactly what I was trying to do. Variable water speed is the key. It was so efficient that my aquarium plants exploded in growth rate. Sadly I left them without CO2 for about one week and the result was disastrous. 80% of my plants dyed of. Now I am looking for a PH meter and an pressurized CO2 container to avoid such mishaps in the future.

@AussiePrideCrew i only have a crown tail betta in their right now i was planig on geting pleco
the water temp is tropical because i have some plants in their i allso just made a co2 diffusion

What is this type of glass? Is it an old lamp glass? You know the ones that are put over a candle? Please tell me.
stoyashot 2 years ago
Yes! This was an old oil lamp.
qntt2002 2 years ago
I'm gonna steal this idea by using an old soda bottle as the vase. Think itll work just fine .
stoyashot 2 years ago
wont you suffocate the fish if this is CO2
datzfast 2 years ago
No because the plants give off O2 as they use the CO2.
lozgod 2 years ago 4
You can gas the fish if you go over 40+ ppm of CO2. This is why you have a drop checker so you can measure the amount of CO2 in the water.

Wow! It way be sort of an eye swore in the tank but that is a 100% effective diffusor. Nice tank also!
quaqa88 3 years ago
That looks like a hagen in-tank micro filter with a plastic bulb affixed to the output and a CO2 source attached to the venturi air intake.
Anyways, it looks like a heck of an efficient diffuser. Kudos!

HildeIII 3 years ago
so how is the glosso. doing? I am a bit confused as to where the Co2 is coming out?
HildeIII 3 years ago
the co2 dissolves into the water, rather than letting it to the atmosphere.
cepacol06 3 years ago
Not the prettiest thing in the world but I guess it works well.
quaqa88 3 years ago
It holds the CO2 bubbles into the aquarium. So the CO2 must diffuse into the water.

co2 ladder sucks and doesnt diffuse as much as a reactor would.
That glass thing looks pretty neat compared to a ladder.

@qntt2002 Exactly, you'll get bubbles on plants when you put your tank in sunlight for a few days. But you'll also get a lot of algae.

... use an ADA glass diffuser?
... use a CO2 'mist' setup?
... hide it with plants?
... place the reactor outside your tank in a sump?
... dont inject CO2?
Come on, use your brain!!! If you dont like the design ammend it, but you have to admit it is a very efficient design.

nice diffuser! wish i had one like that. mine telling me what powerhead u using? is the white tube delivering CO2 into the outlet of the powerhead?
chainer22 4 years ago
The smallest power head I was able to find thru my aquarium junk. About 100 / 150l per hour. And... Yes the white tube is feeding CO2.
