either everything is open to make jokes about. or nothing is.
the point of comedy is entertainment, not an outlandish personal attack on a specific person or race.. whatever. its observational comments that make people laugh. if you dont like it. deal with it, nothing happens to you when your offended, cos im so sure that these celebrities who get jokes made up about them dont even know there happening alot of the time, and if they do i dont think they should even care. i certainly wouldnt.
If she has ever laughed at a joke about someone else then she can't be upset about that. Most people have heard jokes about things that are close to them, like disease or race but you can't laugh at a joke about pedos if you haven't had a kid who was raped. Then be upset about a joke about obesity if your a fatty.
The funniest part of frankies joke was this, rebecca heard it/about it, thought about it, realised that he made a good point, and got pissed about it :L
Oh Yeah, lets ban this aswell. Each new law we introduce like this disproves Democracy and freedom of speech, this place is gonna end up like syria in a few years, Frankie Boyle is a genius.
I'm having trouble with this one. Apologise for what?! One of the tamest gags we've ever heard from Frankie Boyle?! If the BBC admitted that gag was offensive, why the hell did they allow him to remain on the programme for so long? Have they actually heard his other material or what?! To say the whole thing was blown out of proportion is an understatement. Soon enough, comics won't be allowed to say anything about anybody, just incase somebody finds it offensive. It's pathetic.
Comedy is called COMEDY cause your not suposed to take it for real. Comedy=joke, real life = real life. Where the fuck would we be if we couldnt laugh at ourselves.
I have to say, comparing a personal comment to full blown out racism is bull Pucky. There is a significant difference between the two.
One is about a specific person, as in this case, and that's free game. It's fun.
The Other, is about an entire race, and that isn't alright.
This wasn't malicious, or cruel, she should man the heck up and take it in her stride; if Frankie Boyle made a joke about me, I'd take it as a mark of being worth makeing jokes about.
Female olympics is redundant anyway...who cares if a woman wins a gold medal? Women will never be better than men at anything, unless women can compete at male atheletes abilities they should not be allowed to join the olympics. It's about being the BEST not the best woman or the best fucking retard.
The thing some people don't understand is that everyone i can think of and everything people laugh at is laughing at something or what some one did, racist jokes are different as that saying all black people or Asian people or ugly, you cant say that for definite unless you have met every black or Asian person, weras a joke about a specific persons looks is you own opinion, i don't think anyone hasn't at one point made a joke about someones looks at that persons expense it happens, get over it
The host of this is of course running a deliberately provocative argument, but no-one points out that it's flawed. Stewart Lee did a good analysis (it's on youtube) of Jimmy Hill's attempt to equate making racist remarks with making fun of his big chin. Check it out if you agree with the host of this show.
Expecting Frankie Boyle to apologise, kinda barking up the wrong tree there? There is about as much chance of that happening as hitler coming back from Neptune and trying to steal my liver to make a new breed of super carrot.
i think it's absolutely insane that the court of "public opinion" is ruled by 75 digruntled BBC viewers as opposed by the millions of mock the week fans who watched the show and had no comment at all. Boyle tailors his jokes carefully. he doesn't just "go off" on visible minorities like Wright suggests in an off-the-cuff devil's advocate sort of way. here's the way i see it: people will mock you. whatever the reason. deal with it. stop looking for emotional compensation and grow a pair.
it was a joke. t's a shame we've gotten to this stage. Humour is fucking humour. It's like when a danish guy made a muhaamed cartoon, they threaten terrorism and break into his house. Thank fuck for Sickipedia, atleast there i can get sick jokes :D
i hope he never says sorry. frankie boyle makes the deepest controversial jokes aimed at different people, and its hilarious! no-one else would have the balls to in the media, and he has no boundaries, thats what makes him brilliant. People who are offended need to get a sense of humour for christ sake.
He's right to not apologize, it was a joke, i hope he doesn't ever say sorry. It made me and millions of people laugh, he always does. He insults people in the deepest controversial ways that no-one else would have the balls to tbh and its hilarious. These type of people who get offended by it need to get a sense of humour and stop being so silly
All this fuss and only 75 complaints? Why is this even an issue then?
I've been on the receiving end of many jokes, some of which hurt, but at the end of the day its just a joke and you need to get over it -especially if it was hilarious.
on the subject of looks if ur commenting on how they were born (they cant help it) then yes its nasty but still funny if theyve made themselves look like that (amy winehouse) then it doesnt matter what colour u are
also how often do blacks take the piss out of whites for their stlye looks and fashion it works both ways we look odd to them they look odd to us
He seems to be missing the point here. He repeats the question of why you can make a joke about a blonde white woman, but not a black person. Not the issue. Because the joke was about general appearance and general sexual innuendo. The joke was not about race or skin colour. If it had been, then his point would have been relevant. I think that's what Christian Digby was trying to say, and I agree absolutely. To be extra sensitive about someone due only to skin colour is discriminatory in itself.
Frankie Boyle is magnificent, and so long as he continues to slag everyone, indiscriminately - he'll be a demigod. I hate the host of this show. He looks like someones just shoved some fox shit in his mouth before the camera turns to him.
Kristian was right.....comedy should have a free voice, it shouldn't be restrained in all formats, obviously some shows offer a lighter variety of comedy while others i.e mock the week go for the more dark, black comedy.
there is a huge difference between raceism and making a joke about a swimmer holding her breath, you cant compare the two. the host is making a stupid point.
Drawing comparisons between personal attacks on a specific person and the generalisation of an entire race is completely ridiculous.. they're not even in the same basket.
Comedy and satire should have no boundaries. Frankie has made jokes about Kerry Katona, Princess Diana, Heather Mills, Heath Ledger the list goes on an on. He should not apologise, he should never have even been asked to. The media need to realise that regardless of how personal an insult from a comic, it is just for comic effect. Stop cracking whips and pointing fingers. If it is really that abominable, who should be blamed? The comic for saying it or the vast majority that found it funny?
have you noticed around 30 complaints jonathon ross and brand got over the phone call. after they apologised they got blasted by 30,000 complaints yet, Jeremy Clarkson got 100+ complaints about prostitutes and simply said PISS OFF and no one followed him up on it the only way to survive is never admit responsibility as soon as u say ur wrong theyll beat every form of punishment out of u alot of genocides have never been apologized for, for the cost it would have on said government
Spot on. Comedians dont use jokes as personal attacks, in this case, Frankie Boyle's simply noticed a prominent feature and made an amusing observation about it.
Oh please. What Frankie Boyle said about her was actually nice compared to some of the other things he says. If you are one of the people who complained about this joke, that show is clearly not for you.
75 comments. Wow, never mind that millions of people watched mock the week and pissed themselves. That cow needs to get a sense of humour 'cos she's not exactly got her looks going for her.
The thing is, not one person said a thing when they cracked jokes about Pete Doherty on Mock The Week. Clearly if you're in the public view you're gunna get people saying things about you. At least what he said was funny.
well theres a huge difference bewteen mocking(how ironic) a racial stereotype/physical feature of a particular race, its not all blonde swimmers who look like a penguin so its all good, and its not about womans opression either its be cause she looks likea cross between barbie and morph. id still shag her though
Mock The Week is a COMEDY show. COMEDY involves JOKES. JOKES, as the name suggests, aren't meant to be taken seriously. For God's sake, Britain has a sense of humour, why aren't we allowed to demonstrate it?
frankly(how ironic) you can take your middle class gah angrow a sense of humour, oh and while im here, the queen is a nobody, harry and willis are publicity stunts and your stamps taste like a 40 yr olds fanny, and yes before you ask, i know minge.......
If there is a problem that is100% the fault of the BBC editors!! Mock the week isn't a live show!! The BBC are so slimey for trying to palm this off on Frankie - they are behaving like politicians!!
"Frankie Boyle is not a malicious person" hahahaha, that woman has no idea. She's right, though, about it being just a joke. Frankie Boyle should never have left Mock The Week, and the BBC are gay for making "comedy guidelines" so that nobody gets offended. Now, nothing will be funny anymore. Comedy, by nature, is laughing at something. If you're not allowed to laugh at anything, in case it causes offence, where is the comedy?
FRANKIE BOYLE! FRANKIE BOYLE! FRANKIE BOYLE! Adlington should apologise to frankie and learn to laugh at yourself love and offensive comedy is the best.
being in the media as an actor, performer, athlete, politician, any kind of public figure, is taking a risk. you WILL be criticized, and not just for what you do. EVERYTHING about you will be criticized when you are visible to the public eye, and you need to be prepared for offensive remarks along with praise. she has won gold medals, and should be proud and secure in her achievements. no apology required. also, comedy would not exist if you can't make fun of anyone or anything.
The whole topic is laffable. He makes jokes about rapists and peadophiles and serial killers and terrorists and this is the joke that gets highlighted.
75 people complained. I bet at least 70 of them had the surname or were friends with people who had the surname Addlington!
The other 5 were probably just the typical in your face Poltically correct cunts who the world would be a better place without.
For the record i would shag Rebbecca Addlington............ with the lights off ;-)
they really cant tell the diffrence between a joke, a personal attack and and a racist joke.... frankie boyle was a legend and its a shame hes gone :(
they said that frankie never makes jokes about men being ugly......he talkes about gordon brown all the time.its just a joke and frankie boyles a legend and shouldnt have to appologise for it.
My fundemental objection to Wright's argument? Not everything has to be about race. And is it just me who's noticed that he ignores completely valid points? Spitting Image did highlight characitures, so I want to know exactly what difference it makes whether that's portrayed using puppets, make-up, or if it's just a comment made on a panel show. And he just dismissed it with: "Well, they were made of sponge."
Wright copped out because there were no other options. I'm with Frankie on this.
I honestly don't see why the fuck Frankie should apologize.
If there are any fans of him watching this, you'll agree that he's gotten away with far worse than what he said about Rebecca hasn't he?
For example, he's said stuff about Princess Diana, Richard Hammond's Crash etc etc.
These idiots on here were comparing him to Bernard Manning I reckon. Well Frankie's humour is tame to that of Bernard's. Bernard's is FAR more offensive.
The only crime here is the lack of sense of humour from Adlington. I'd prefer Boyle to represent the UK over her. Also, it's a ridiculous comparison from racism to "she has a weird nose", it's freaking patronising.
3- the point is, all he said was that she looked like someone who's looking into the back of the spoon, and there are FAR more insulting things like that, said on tv every day, but she just needs to grow up, I really couldnt giva sh** if someone said that aboutr me, cos my mind isnt as petty as that.
....graham norton made the exact same spoon comment about danni minogue about a year before this. ignoring the fact that frankie seems to have recycled a joke to begin with, were there any complaints made about the apparently bullet proof norton? no.
@sharkey4123 (and everyone, really): She's upset about the comment (probably) because, like almost all women, she's self-conscious about her appearance. There are no women who relish being told that they're ugly. She's certainly not the first female celeb to have been told that - she's simply one of the few who is making her mind known, rather than swallowing it and smiling. Of course, then again, it's impossible to make a joke without breaking someone's heart. * shrug *
I love Frankie, he's my favourite comedian, but I didn't really find this funny. He should have said he was sorry and it should have been over. Most famous people can take a joke about them but if someone is so offended by a joke then you should apologize. Comedians should be allowed to say what they want though.
Last week on Nevermind the Buzzcocks Frankie said 'Brainier than Kurt Cobain's garage walls,' I think that was mocking someone's suicide, surely more offensive than mocking someone's appearance. I'm a huge Nirvana fan, but I laughed at that one, get over it, it's a big bad world, wow you got insulted, and?
So if a white person with a wide nose and thick lips got insulted for thier appearance it would be okay, but if a black person were insulted in the same way it would be worse murdering a child ( a crime notorious for its lack of harsh punishment). Wierd fucking planet this is. wierd.
i love the way u picked features that r so clearly and distinctly in reference to black people....i mean i can only speak 4 maself in sayin that i cant recall the last white person i saw with big lips and a wide nose lol....an interesting comparison none the less!!!
i wish these political correct idiots would just disappear , it was a joke ,it is humour and comedy and the easily offended should watch something else and stop trying to censor what others find as funny .
comedy has no bounds ,Rebecca Adlington needs to get real . there is tragic things in peoples lifes other than getting 'offended' by a comedy show .
Yeah but, would you get upset if people insulted you and your looks infront of a room of people you know? Or infront of a pub full of people you don't know? Imagine if someone insulted you and a whole country heard it? It's her physical features, she can't escape them and nobody likes to be called ugly...It's like being in the street where there are a lot of people and someone shouting out "YOU'RE UGLY" Everyone will look and judge you. It's not very fair.
This presenter is an idiot. Frankie Boyle would make a joke about her looks because of her looks. He wouldn't make a joke about an ugly black person because of their race, it would be because of their looks. Everyone is fair game to a comedian, this is a hypocritical strawman argument on the part of the presenter, he's completely missed Boyle's approach.
oh come on he basically said she was ugly.... hes said much worse.. i mean have a sense of humour everone insults people get over it. I mean its comedy when have we got to the point where no one can be offended theres nothing wrong with getting offended get over it. otherwise were going to start limiting freedom of speech
But that's the whole point, she has the right to be offended by someone insulting her. And anybody who says they wouldn't be offended, is a fucking liar.
they would get offended but I'm saying there is nothing wrong with getting offended, We live in a cushoined society where everyone is sued for everything and everything has to be perfect. Well its not most comedy will be offensive. Just take it in good humour. Its called MOCK the Week the whole point is mockery. And if frankie is forced to apoligise that means everysingle comedian will have to apologise for something. And thats not happened yet because other people have realised its just a joke
Yeah but, like being a different race can't be changed, which is why it is unacceptable, somebody can't change their looks, so why is that any different?? I thnk that is what he is trying to say.
I can understand being offended by the joke but trying to limit his freedom of speech is unacceptable. It's comedy. There are too many idiots trying to regulate good taste these days. Imagine if we had these kind of rules back in the early '70s when Monty Python was in its prime.
Haha, do you know me? who are you?- well anyway, rebecca does need to grow up, anyone else would just laugh it off, but if everyone were like her then freedom of speach dont count for nothin', and comedy shows would be very boring.
1- IF my face remotely looked like a rat, and I lookied in the mirror and saw the resemblance, yes- i would laugh.
2- as you dont know what i look like, and my face doesnt look lik a rat, and some random weirdo who hasnt seen my face goes on tv and says so then I'd just have to say that's silly, then I'd eat a sandwhich.
It's nothing to do with PC. You can' t just insult people because you're a comedian and on the tv. if you called someone ugly in the street it would be unacceptable!
aww Kristian... :( RIP :(

FRANKIE BOYLE! FRANKIE BOYLE! FRANKIE BOYLE! Adlington should apologise to frankie and learn to laugh at yourself love and offensive comedy is the best.
edwafc 2 years ago
being in the media as an actor, performer, athlete, politician, any kind of public figure, is taking a risk. you WILL be criticized, and not just for what you do. EVERYTHING about you will be criticized when you are visible to the public eye, and you need to be prepared for offensive remarks along with praise. she has won gold medals, and should be proud and secure in her achievements. no apology required. also, comedy would not exist if you can't make fun of anyone or anything.
fedayi1177 2 years ago
The whole topic is laffable. He makes jokes about rapists and peadophiles and serial killers and terrorists and this is the joke that gets highlighted.
75 people complained. I bet at least 70 of them had the surname or were friends with people who had the surname Addlington!
The other 5 were probably just the typical in your face Poltically correct cunts who the world would be a better place without.
For the record i would shag Rebbecca Addlington............ with the lights off ;-)

Its wrong if you say all white women are sluts. Its wrong if you say all blacks look like gorillas.
However if you call Jordon a slut, or say Shaq looks like a gorilla thats alright.
The difference is picking on individuals, rather than painting a race with a brush, or putting a race down.
However its ok to take the mickey out of men or women cause its something we all have in common.
The day we cant pick on individuals cause theyre different from ourselves is PC going too far.

Strange. I could have sworn it was a joke- not a personal attack.
What a funny world we live in.

Shouldn't Wright of done a little research before he talked a load of crap about Frankie Boyle?
seeing as he hosts this show, he should've read/watched some of his jokes, to see that he isn't sexist/rascist.
Mesnesl 2 years ago
they said that frankie never makes jokes about men being ugly......he talkes about gordon brown all the time.its just a joke and frankie boyles a legend and shouldnt have to appologise for it.
MrLiam55555 2 years ago 5
My fundemental objection to Wright's argument? Not everything has to be about race. And is it just me who's noticed that he ignores completely valid points? Spitting Image did highlight characitures, so I want to know exactly what difference it makes whether that's portrayed using puppets, make-up, or if it's just a comment made on a panel show. And he just dismissed it with: "Well, they were made of sponge."
Wright copped out because there were no other options. I'm with Frankie on this.

what dickhead compares personal insults to racism and sexism??
frankie boyle is a genius!!
nothingtoobig 2 years ago
I honestly don't see why the fuck Frankie should apologize.
If there are any fans of him watching this, you'll agree that he's gotten away with far worse than what he said about Rebecca hasn't he?
For example, he's said stuff about Princess Diana, Richard Hammond's Crash etc etc.
These idiots on here were comparing him to Bernard Manning I reckon. Well Frankie's humour is tame to that of Bernard's. Bernard's is FAR more offensive.
Darkstar263 2 years ago 4
frankies a fucking ledgend !
MrRosstifarian 2 years ago
The only crime here is the lack of sense of humour from Adlington. I'd prefer Boyle to represent the UK over her. Also, it's a ridiculous comparison from racism to "she has a weird nose", it's freaking patronising.

Wow she's ugly. She does look like a spoon reflection.
Astrolounge 2 years ago 9
3- the point is, all he said was that she looked like someone who's looking into the back of the spoon, and there are FAR more insulting things like that, said on tv every day, but she just needs to grow up, I really couldnt giva sh** if someone said that aboutr me, cos my mind isnt as petty as that.

....graham norton made the exact same spoon comment about danni minogue about a year before this. ignoring the fact that frankie seems to have recycled a joke to begin with, were there any complaints made about the apparently bullet proof norton? no.
francesca420 2 years ago
The only reason she's getting annoyed about it is because it's true.
sharkey4123 2 years ago 3
@sharkey4123 (and everyone, really): She's upset about the comment (probably) because, like almost all women, she's self-conscious about her appearance. There are no women who relish being told that they're ugly. She's certainly not the first female celeb to have been told that - she's simply one of the few who is making her mind known, rather than swallowing it and smiling. Of course, then again, it's impossible to make a joke without breaking someone's heart. * shrug *
vclxrr 2 years ago
I love Frankie, he's my favourite comedian, but I didn't really find this funny. He should have said he was sorry and it should have been over. Most famous people can take a joke about them but if someone is so offended by a joke then you should apologize. Comedians should be allowed to say what they want though.

smpowis 2 years ago 3
Last week on Nevermind the Buzzcocks Frankie said 'Brainier than Kurt Cobain's garage walls,' I think that was mocking someone's suicide, surely more offensive than mocking someone's appearance. I'm a huge Nirvana fan, but I laughed at that one, get over it, it's a big bad world, wow you got insulted, and?
Respect to Frankie for not backing down.

im a huge black man that cant swim. `I have big balls.
RossHildick3D 2 years ago
So if a white person with a wide nose and thick lips got insulted for thier appearance it would be okay, but if a black person were insulted in the same way it would be worse murdering a child ( a crime notorious for its lack of harsh punishment). Wierd fucking planet this is. wierd.
MohammedsFieryHat 2 years ago
i love the way u picked features that r so clearly and distinctly in reference to black people....i mean i can only speak 4 maself in sayin that i cant recall the last white person i saw with big lips and a wide nose lol....an interesting comparison none the less!!!

@soulsista21 Mick Jagger has big fuck off lips. Eddie Murphy made a hilarious joke about him to that effect in his stand up. Thought I'd add that (Y)
TheDonMega12 2 years ago
i wish these political correct idiots would just disappear , it was a joke ,it is humour and comedy and the easily offended should watch something else and stop trying to censor what others find as funny .
comedy has no bounds ,Rebecca Adlington needs to get real . there is tragic things in peoples lifes other than getting 'offended' by a comedy show .
she's an idiot .
BarryGrantBrookie 2 years ago 5
Yeah but, would you get upset if people insulted you and your looks infront of a room of people you know? Or infront of a pub full of people you don't know? Imagine if someone insulted you and a whole country heard it? It's her physical features, she can't escape them and nobody likes to be called ugly...It's like being in the street where there are a lot of people and someone shouting out "YOU'RE UGLY" Everyone will look and judge you. It's not very fair.
theworldinnit 2 years ago
This presenter is an idiot. Frankie Boyle would make a joke about her looks because of her looks. He wouldn't make a joke about an ugly black person because of their race, it would be because of their looks. Everyone is fair game to a comedian, this is a hypocritical strawman argument on the part of the presenter, he's completely missed Boyle's approach.

would you like to be called ugly on tv??
theworldinnit 2 years ago
oh come on he basically said she was ugly.... hes said much worse.. i mean have a sense of humour everone insults people get over it. I mean its comedy when have we got to the point where no one can be offended theres nothing wrong with getting offended get over it. otherwise were going to start limiting freedom of speech
lotzsplotz 2 years ago
But that's the whole point, she has the right to be offended by someone insulting her. And anybody who says they wouldn't be offended, is a fucking liar.
theworldinnit 2 years ago 2
they would get offended but I'm saying there is nothing wrong with getting offended, We live in a cushoined society where everyone is sued for everything and everything has to be perfect. Well its not most comedy will be offensive. Just take it in good humour. Its called MOCK the Week the whole point is mockery. And if frankie is forced to apoligise that means everysingle comedian will have to apologise for something. And thats not happened yet because other people have realised its just a joke
lotzsplotz 2 years ago

Yeah but, like being a different race can't be changed, which is why it is unacceptable, somebody can't change their looks, so why is that any different?? I thnk that is what he is trying to say.
theworldinnit 2 years ago
Frankie Boyle is fucking funny as fuck, I don't even care about this, this is jokes
GinarTheNinjar 2 years ago
I can understand being offended by the joke but trying to limit his freedom of speech is unacceptable. It's comedy. There are too many idiots trying to regulate good taste these days. Imagine if we had these kind of rules back in the early '70s when Monty Python was in its prime.

If I said you had a face like a rat on tv, would you laugh it off??
theworldinnit 2 years ago
1- IF my face remotely looked like a rat, and I lookied in the mirror and saw the resemblance, yes- i would laugh.
2- as you dont know what i look like, and my face doesnt look lik a rat, and some random weirdo who hasnt seen my face goes on tv and says so then I'd just have to say that's silly, then I'd eat a sandwhich.
