1:21 "so that they would have a Christian father like Jesus enjoyed". Surely Joseph never read the new testament, so he couldn't have been a Christian....?
@cornbreadwillie Hi willie- in fact I directly quoted Mr. Driscoll. He says very clearly from 1:08 that God is saying that men should consider marrying single mothers and adopting their children "so that they would have a Christian father like Jesus enjoyed." Jesus' father was not a Christian.
Time out, Marky Mark.....where in the Bible does it say Jesus was referred to as a bastard or that Mary was EVER called a whore or that he was mocked for the rest of his life.........WHAT???? Married a single Mother? I have NO idea where this guy gets his ideas, but they aren't from any Bible I've ever read....
@cornbreadwillie Mark says Jesus was called a bastard, Mary was called a whore, and that Joseph was mocked "for the rest of his life"..........please tell me where in the Bible is this? Let me help, nowhere..................
@BeauJames59 IN THAT CULTURE SHE WAS CONSIDERED A WHORE BECAUSE THE JEWS OF THAT TIME DID NOT BELIEVE HE WAS THE SON OF GOD & WOULD HAVE STONED HER IT WAS THEIR CULTURE.. UNLESS U BELIEVED IN HER STORY THAT THIS WAS A MIRACLE BIRTH & I AM A BASTARD, SO JESUS EXPERIENCED ALL OF US IN HUMAN FORM THIS WAY TOO..DOESN"T HV TO SAY WE KNOW BY CULTURE & JEWS STILL DN't BELIEVE HE's SON OF GOD, SO NO MIRACLE BIRTH THERE TO THEM. WHAT AN AWESOME GOD WE HAVE!
Wrong: In 1st Century Palestine, the future husband had conjugal rights over his betrothed, which is why
a. only Joseph could 'out' her as an adulteress [Even then, Joseph was determined not to 'out' OR divorce her but simply "put her away", which was send her off to live apart from him.] and
b. St. Matthew has to make the distinction that "When Mary was espoused to Joseph, BUT before they came together, she was found with child..."
See "Jesus and His Times", by Henri Daniel-Rops (1945)
Let me ask you something. If you sincerely believe that the Bible is nothing but fairy tales, then answer me this. What is the thread of continuity that runs through the Bible--the consistent theme from the OT through to the NT?
I never said the Bible is nothing but fairy tales. Sure there are plenty in it. I said it contradicts it's self. As for your question, that would depend on who you ask. Certainly the Christians as a whole can't agree on one universal meaning. If you where to ask me, I would say "God" in nut shell. Now whatever meaning you draw from it is yours. What do you think it is?
ES, look a few comments up. You did make the fairy tale comment As for the question I posed to you here's the answer. The OT is God's revelation telling us He would destroy death, the NT tells us how He did it. And it actually doesn't depend on who is asked. The Bible is not relative to our situations or culture, its dependent upon our response to it. Jesus paid our fine where you and I broke God's law. You can go free if you repent and trust in Him! Do it today! I don't want you 2B in Hell.
I agree, if you are to hold the Bible holy then you should take it word for word. The sad part is it does depend on who you ask. I consider the Bible rather vile. If you can't relate to that then I imagine you are rather comfortable with pedophiles, murder, incest, violence, revenge, hatred, genocide, sexual activity in violent content, rape . . .ect.
I would not expose my loved ones to such filth. I'm sorry, I love them. If you can dig through that and find something positive good for you.
Well the Bible is definitely rated R. And I would venture to say that no Pastor should disagree with that. However, just because you find most of what you're referring to doesn't mean that its applied the same way we apply a rated R movie. Lots of things have to be taken into context regarding those issues. We never stand in judgment over God...its the other way around.
I find that unsettling. This book written by men has the power to make a person throw their common sense out the window. It's not "God" who I'm judging, it's a book. The claim that it's "inspired by God" is just ridiculous. Man lies, any number of things could have inspired the writer. It is fear that drives the notion that this book shouldn't be judged like any other book. I hope there is a "God" of some sort. I will apologize on behalf of the human race. Surly this being laughs at this book.
Ok well, regardless of how you feel about whether it's inspired or not...scripture says it is. (2 Tim. 3:16) The same way you inspire a pen to write a letter to someone, God, through men, inspired scripture to be His written love letter to you! I agree, men do lie, but God is not a man that He would lie. (Num. 23:19)
Sure, you can make your judgments on the Bible. This is how you discern is veracity. Yet, the Bible defends itself. It really doesn't need me to defend it. <e<
Well fair enough. It's been a civil discussion with a lot of insight for me, so thank you. For me that book will never do. In fact, no religious book will, unless I see a "God" write it in his/her/it's hand/appendage/ect with my own eyes. Tales of long ago telling me what's what written in a time of mass ignorance, reinterpreted, reedited to the point the original doesn't exist is a very far stretch IMO. Alas what holds it together is faith. Not a very strong glue for the faithless.
Mass ignorance eh? So you're saying everyone was stupid and they chose to be stupid? That's basically what ignorance is. Not knowing something because they chose not to. You think people now a days are smarter than they were back then? I really can't agree with that.
Ignorant simply means uninformed; unaware. Chosen or not. It's not an insult. For example: You used to be ignorant to the meaning of ignorant but not anymore. You're welcome.
Doesn't mean the same thing as stupid.
Yes, we are more informed as a whole because of how easy it is to obtain information today.
It sounds like you don't let them watch TV or the News, or have any exposure to groups of people at all then...society is full of the same thing,,,"There is nothing new under the sun."
Just curious, (im not trying to argue with you) where in the Bible does it contradict itself? I've heard this before, but after analyzing so-called "contradictory bible passages", it seems that the quotes are taken out of context and are always later explained in the bible.
To save me some time start here watch?v=F2EmxXdZ6Zc
There are 9 of them so far. Watch them all, they are short. If you want more I'll go into detail when time permits. Nice playing by the way. I play too. Ever hang out at the Andy Sneap forums? Great place, good people and more musical information than you could shake a stick at. lol
Ahh, I saw that before. It sounds odd to someone who isnt familiar. Jesus spoke in odd ways (though often thought provoking, like it was meant to make someone find the context in which it was used). It's not so much a contradiction, but just something that demands thorough analyzing and comes off as odd. I've heard them all, believe me lol. And thanks, I concentrate on theory and classical guitar more now (as that was a year ago), so im sure i can find some good stuff to help me out.
I believe the word you're looking for is "parables" and I'm well-acquainted with the bible. I read it far to many times. Anyways, good luck with your playing. =)
@EnervatedSociety The question is are you a Christian? If not then you are just reading another book. The Bible does and will not make sense to an unsaved person. The Bible is a living, breathing book that has different meanings every time a Christian reads it.

Your atheism is narrow and simplistic...plenty of people with IQ's higher than yours (and higher than Bill Maher's) believe in God.
