To short time this band, it's a crying shame. Such a fine harpplayer and singer Lester was. And his Strat-playing guitarman Paul "the Kid"Size so good. Wish could find more recent performance of him.
This clip is a fitting tribute to one of the hottest things to happen to blues since Wolf, Muddy, the likes of Little Walter. Such a shame is was a short lived succes, I loved their single "Black Water Roll", I was so hungry to hear where they were going next. Alas, first Lester went to start 13 and then took off for ever... What a band though, and they're sure on fire in this clip!
Rock my world Red Devils! Smokin', smokin', smokin'....Thanks for posting. Can not get enough of this band. Sorry I missed them in the '90's, but glad I found 'em now!
Lester did play marine bands and the blues harps used to be good until the 1990's when hohner made them with oak instead of pearwood. The only reason he's blowing a blues harp is because the local dutch music store was prolly out of the keys he needed for the gig. He also tuned his harps on gigs.
The pre war Marine Band harps are the best. It does make a difference what YOU do with it obviously. MS bluesharp is ok, Lee Oskar is junk. Hohner is the best product on the market and that's that !
I knew The Kid. Played in my living room a few times..He'd only been playing the guitar for a few(3)years before this show..can I get an amen for talent..For Real..
I didn't see them at Pinkpop 93 because I was too drunk from the night before, but a few weeks later they played in the Schouwburg in Sittard and whent to see them.
It was great and I will never ever forget it, it was one big rollin' machine that hit you.
This was one of the greatest Blues bands ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
that counter is wrong. i know i watched this a million times already !! this is the absoulute baddesst. by a long shot.brother lester..we all miss ya homes. c/s
It was Pinkpop Holland in 1994 or 1995. I was there. They were playing as the first band on the festival. It was 11 o'clock in the mornin', can you inmagine?? Everyone was awake!! Lester Butler rules!! May the devil have his soul!!
They WERE one of the greatest blues/harp bands of my generation. They learned it, then they took it forward. I love the Red Devils. Look for their CD, "King King". RIP Lester.
Blues on steroids... can't sit still.
Their secret?
- one clockwork Drummer.
- one rocksolid rhythm guitarist.
- one tough Bassman.
- one guitarist genius.
- one bluesharpist genius.
Chances on getting this talent all in one band are one in ten million maybe?
No wonder this is a once in lifetime band.

I can't understand he's playing that hohner bluesharp. Those are the worst harps ever made.

Still it sounds very good.
So for me it doesn't really matter witch harp i play.

Marineband kinda guy??Whats that mean?
For me Marineband,MS Bluesharp,Lee Oskar,Special20 etc etc.....it doesn't matter!
It matters what YOU do with it!
Only the intonation is different.
For me, the type of bluesharp you play says nothing about your style of blues.

I never had an pre-war Marine band, its too long ago...(or do you mean the golf/afghanistan war?hehe)
Why is Lee Osker junk?
The best ones i have are some Seydels but they are expensive.Especialy the customiced one.

Maybe but when he blow the harp it sounds bigger than big!!

Amen to that! Lester and the boys were an evolutionary force in blues. King King is my favourite live album.
RIP Lester.
