I did a similar demo a few nights ago. I attached a battery pack and an electric buzzer to a length of rope and swung it as fast as I could towards the class. Some got scared that the heavy battery would break free and hit them in the face, but I told them they would finally have a use for their duck-and-cover training!
The demo also works when the speaker is placed on a record turntable. It isn't nearly as frightening for students, though.
That effect is really cool - but that room have pretty poor acostics, it's becoming a mess of the sound boncing around in the room and interfere with it self.
If you have good acostics you can clearly hear the tone change in frequency depending on speed and direction

You can also hear the effect by taking a ringing cell phone in hand and swinging your arm
