@thecravenator42069 It could have happened. But in the end, RHCP has festival dates this year, so he's doing that instead of playing the next Chickenfoot album (whether or not it's the recording or touring he's not doing, I can't remember). But yeah, they'd sound completely different. What's great is (Quote gazmon) it's such a relaxed style. I've heard more complex stuff, but nothing quite beats the feel and groove Chad gets out of his kit. My favourite living drummer.
@kc when you play your left foot is keeping time assuming your right handed)so if your playing on the and's on all the 8th notes with your Hats if your left foot will automatically raise hats giving a funky little hi hat sound. What is much more difficult is lifting and accenting hats on the 1/4 note. Example, the begining of "Funky Monks" the only reason that is easy is because the bass drum is not too busy
His left foot is just counting 1/8 motes..It will help the transition to two bass pedals greatly. Independent wise your left foot should do that naturally one you start to relax and play a little
if your talking about that weird stabbing thing hes doing with the sticks, hes not implying anything, its just a technique to get a different sound. never played with much myself nor do i know much about it, but stab your cymbals with the bead of the stick and you should get a general idea of what i mean..
LOL, so why is that he didn't hit anything when he did it twice in this vid?
I think we all know what you're talking about in terms of getting a chime effect by hitting the edge of a cymbal with the shank or neck of you're stick. This is definitely Chad asking the sound guy to turn up the backing track and then turn it down later. If you've ever been to a Chad Smith clinic, you would have seen him do this many times before.
Yeah it's funny how these drum and cymbal manufacturer's make signature models with artist's and half the guy's don't even end up using them!? I know for a fact that chad hardly ever (if at all) uses his pearl signature snare live (not sure about in the studio). And, everyone knows he's been using AA's for ages since he first started looking for cymbals that don't break. Gotta say though, I've been playing his pearl snare for a while, and, I think it sounds as good as it look's. Great value!!
no such thing as B8 Pro alloy, there's B8 alloy then theres B20.. B8 alloy is used in the B8 and B8 Pro models, and the B20 is used in every other model except signature.. some artist chose one or the other and sometimes mixed probably(not saying that's fully correct but the alloy info. is)
I know how to play this song on my drums correct, but just watching this guy play this song just amazes me, the way he plays and everything else. I love this guy!
Agreed, in my mind the best drummers are NOT the ones who can move fast, play double bass well. To me the best drummers are the ones who have the best groove, and Chad certainly has a good groove!!!!

Dude I do play drums, I can easily play this, because the grooves and fills he plays are not that hard, listen carefully. You can even see it at his left leg, it goes faster than the rhythm. I agree that this is so fucking awesome and it's just pleasure from the beginning to the end. I understand he's improvising, but he keeps the beat throughout the song, but on that moment he loses the beat.

Does Chad use his signature snare for these clinic's? I'd be thinking he would just so Pearl can get more sales off it.

He probably wants the backing track turned down

I think he's just refering to the sound guy, in regards to the backing track. Up and then down?

I love this perfomance by Chad Smith!!
Man did he infulence my style & no doubt most every other drummer growing up in the mid 90's.
Thats why I had to buy his signature snare and held onto all my old B8 Pro's & AA's!! Can't bet that sound man!!!!
happy30yrs 3 years ago
Pretty easy to bet B8 Pros.. :P
EmilAhlback 3 years ago
Hey EmilAhilback -
You do know when Chad had his signature crash cymbals made by Sabian, they used the B8 Pro alloy.
(92% copper and 8% tin)
Because B8 Pro is the highest pitched alloy Sabian uses.
They called them the Chad Smith Exposion Crashes
and they did 18.5" and 20.5" odd sizes. (VERY LOUD!).
I remember a lot of people thought they weren't that good compaired to AA's or AAX's, but, in terms of pitch............
Put a B8 Pro next to a AA crash and hear for yourself. :D
happy30yrs 3 years ago
I have owned a B8 Pro, I know what they sound like. I never wanted to rip on the B8 alloy, what I'm saying is that B8 Pros do not sound too good.
EmilAhlback 3 years ago
Each to their own I guess?
I'm certainly not debating sound, because I'm sure you know what you like!
I just reckon if you play rock music and you just want to cut thru everything like lightning, B8 PRO's are a little secret weapon.
As Chad said when he got the chance to design a crash cymbal with Sabian, "I wanted a crash that could take you're face off at a millioin pace's"
I suppose I agree.
If the 'sound' was good enough for Chad....................
then it's good enough for me. :P
happy30yrs 3 years ago
too bad he doesnt even use those cymbals anymore. nor does sabian make them. AAs are much more durable and versatile cymbals.
wgrock 2 years ago
