For 2 years all we did was defend, and then in 1814 we finally got pissed off, invaded America, captured Washington and burnt down the White House, U.S Capitol and various other public buildings although being the friendly respectful Canadians that we are, we were very strict in leaving private property untouched.

We didn't lose the war of 1812 nor did Canada win. We lost in Vietnam but are certainly winning in Iraq. My proof, ever read the news recently, all-time low casualties right now and the Iraqi government is gaining more control due to us spending money on building their infanstructure up. Couple of things you are missing. the war happened because Texas won it's freedom from Mexico, which at the time was run by a tyrant. That tyrant lost the battle and signed a treaty agreeing to not attack Texas. He violated that treaty. Texas became a part of the USA and Santa Anna still attacked Texas. So now he is attacking the USA. Thee USA had no choice but to fight back, and to the victor go the spoils. Then, Santa Anna, in his greed, sells more of the land to the USA.
First of all Santa Anna(SA) wasn't president of Mexico during the texian campaign, second the treaty of velazco was never ratify, third in this treaty texas made a clear land grab by expanding its territory from what since colonial time had been its border the nueces river to the rio grande, SA didn't attack the US when the conflict started SA was in exile, he'll return later and thanks to American intervention, and the first skirmishes were in disputed land which by legality favored Mexico
Santa Anna signed the treaty. The Texans were being treated horribly by the mexican government. They had no choice but to revolt. Mexico kept violating the treaty and the USA had no choice but to defend itself.
Texans were not treated badly they were neglected, the revolt originated because the government tried to impose the recollection of taxes, and the issue of slavery, the Texans that began this revolt came from the war party, illegal immigrants who had come too late and saw that the best land was already taken, and who consider slavery indispensible. Now Santa Anna did sign the treaty, but as I said before he was just a general, with no diplomatic power to make such recognition.

The US didn't invade Mexico to take land they came to defend Texas, which had legally been annexed, from invasion by Mexico. Mexico, if they had a legitimate claim, could have tried diplomacy rather than force.
Yes I do feel for the Mexican people who died fighting in the Mexican American War. Its a tragedy that they were fighting on behalf of a corrupt tyrant (Santa Ana) for an unjust cause (to conquer Texas and prevent it becoming part of the US) The purchase of the Western Lands is a separate issue, they were not conquered they were purchased. Mexico sold land as part of recompence for its debt owed to the US. And in 1853 they sold more land (the Gadsden Purchase) without a war at all.
So the thesis that the US invaded for purposes of conquest is ridiculous. In fact a number of US politicians opposed the acquisition of any Mexican terrritory whatsoever aside from Texas as they feared it would upset the balance between slave states and free. History isn't hollywood. The Americans weren't the bad guys and the Mexicans weren't the good guys, there was good and bad on both sides.
Mexico didnt recognize the annexion of texas because in the rules of war no prisoner shall be forced to sign a treaty on behalf of the president. santa ana was a prisoner not a president during the signing, thus mexico calling the texas independence an illegal move. thats why mexico claimd borders at nueces river rather than rio grande. but greedy fuckin texans having already been independent with good size land wanted more.
and how about manifest destiny? thats a good reason to invade mexico. also us had been talking to aquier san francisco to have access to the pacific. the tyrant polk was for the invasion for mexico. while in preesent the greates president of US Lincoln when he was in congress refused to go to work for mexico calling it abviusly an unjust war. so whos right? polk? or Lincoln wich later became the greates US president?

My proof, ever read the news recently, all-time low casualties right now and the Iraqi government is gaining more control due to us spending money on building their infanstructure up. USA won the war because Mexico was still a new country. Also, the mexican goverment was in a total chaos because liberlas and conservators were fighting each other. Even during the war, instead of defending the country they were fighting.
Also, Santa Anna sold the war. Santa Anna did everything to stay alive. If Mexico were a unfied country, and if Spain had never ried to retake Mexico, California, New Mexico, Texas and probably even Lousiana would be speaking spanish right now.

In conclusion Mexico ceded its land and as U. S. Grant put it "in the most unjust war", and by doing so it lost all claims. in many occasion the war could have had quite a turn: Buena Vista, Molino del Rey, Pedregal, etc... Mexico at the end ceded the land but this decision was made by a new chosen president Manuel de la Pena y Pena and a Congress whose factions went from whishing to continue the fight trough guerrilla warfare until Mexico won to favoring complete annexation.

Remember, Mexico did accept a very large sum of money at the conclusion of the war, it wasn't simply seized.(Though selling was forced) As for the border dispute, it was just that, a border dispute, if two countries disagree on a border area, its hard to say they had all the "legal claims" because at the time of annexation of Texas, they claimed to the present border, and were accepted at that, regardless of what Mexico thought. They also attacked American forces on disputed territory.

It was an indemnity, it works very differently. There was a territory sold. La Mesilla trough the Gadsden Purchase but that was in 1854. Now I said legal claims, because the border of Texas since it was founded had been the Nueces, when the empresarios began to colonize they had permission up to the Nueces, when the state of Coahuila-Texas was formed it was clearly stipulated their former borders. Couple of things you are missing. the war happened because Texas won it's freedom from Mexico, which at the time was run by a tyrant. That tyrant lost the battle and signed a treaty agreeing to not attack Texas. He violated that treaty. Texas became a part of the USA and Santa Anna still attacked Texas. So now he is attacking the USA. Thee USA had no choice but to fight back, and to the victor go the spoils. Then, Santa Anna, in his greed, sells more of the land to the USA.

Texans were not treated badly they were neglected, the revolt originated because the government tried to impose the recollection of taxes, and the issue of slavery, the Texans that began this revolt came from the war party, illegal immigrants who had come too late and saw that the best land was already taken, and who consider slavery indispensible. Now Santa Anna did sign the treaty, but as I said before he was just a general, with no diplomatic power to make such recognition.

Mexico attacked an American border patrol on the Rio Grande because they didn't recognize the annexation of Texas. The US didn't invade Mexico to take land they came to defend Texas, which had legally been annexed, from invasion by Mexico. Mexico, if they had a legitimate claim, could have tried diplomacy rather than force.

Yes I do feel for the Mexican people who died fighting in the Mexican American War. Its a tragedy that they were fighting on behalf of a corrupt tyrant (Santa Ana) for an unjust cause (to conquer Texas and prevent it becoming part of the US) The purchase of the Western Lands is a separate issue, they were not conquered they were purchased. Mexico sold land as part of recompence for its debt owed to the US. And in 1853 they sold more land (the Gadsden Purchase) without a war at all.

So the thesis that the US invaded for purposes of conquest is ridiculous. In fact a number of US politicians opposed the acquisition of any Mexican terrritory whatsoever aside from Texas as they feared it would upset the balance between slave states and free. History isn't hollywood. The Americans weren't the bad guys and the Mexicans weren't the good guys, there was good and bad on both sides.

Mexico didnt recognize the annexion of texas because in the rules of war no prisoner shall be forced to sign a treaty on behalf of the president. santa ana was a prisoner not a president during the signing, thus mexico calling the texas independence an illegal move. thats why mexico claimd borders at nueces river rather than rio grande. but greedy fuckin texans having already been independent with good size land wanted more.
