@ watermellen77 yeah i don't think they even allow four element tumbling passes on beam anymore. like the girl at 1:29. they had those through the 96 olympics for shure tho.

@dalmationham Yeah, it's really a shame too. 4 element passes were my absolute favorite :-) The only girl I know of today that does that is Li Shanshan from China. She does a back handspring, back handspring, layout, Korbut flip. That's really the only series I've seen since "96. :-(
difficulty on bars has definately decreased... the dismounts thopugh pretty much easier than now. i dont know if it is for safety or just because the gymnasts arent pushed as much..?
the 80's is definatly a good eara in gymnastics to make a montage about. in the early to mid 80's the had the uneven bars as close together as parallel bars and in the late 80's they had the further apart ones, its good cuz u can see history in just one decade
Is it just me or does it seem like the gymnastics of the 1980's was so much more creative and unique than now? It all seems so cookie cutter now with not much originality--ya know???
@flyergymgirl125 - I was just about to write - this is when gymnastics was truly *artistic* - not just tumbling routines like today ..... almost breaks my heart to watch it.
@flyergymgirl125 i agree. like the flips before they enter the bars... now its all boring and too many technicalities so theres not much room for uniqueness
She wasnt even the tiniest bit sane, just adorable. She says BB is her fave event "because the beam obeys me". How cute is that!? You've gotta have guts to say a 4 inch strip of wood (no offence, anyone) obeys you.
I was watching a video on Nastia Liukin, then someone commented that during the 80's, gymnastics had more elegance, I searched for it and I found this. I agree with that person who said the 80's was much better. If only gymnastics is still that way
it was soo easy the routines back then but like now its so hard...... in the 50's & 60's a backhandspring seires was an olimpic move on the beam now like a backhandspring back lay-out i don't get it
the beam was wood and polished in the 1960's and not designed for back handsprings...the floor was not springy then either....Mukhina did a full twisting double... on 2 inch thick mats...i'd like to see gymnasts today doing their elements with yester years equipment...
The skills starting at 1:08 and 3:27 blew me away. Wow. Would they try that today??? Even if they wanted to try the first one, the bars are farther apart, so I think that would be a bit too difficult.
Ok, the first gymnast is Zsuzsa Csisztu of Hungary (88 olympics), second is Aleftina Pryakhina of USSR (86 Chunichi up), 1:02 is Tunde Zsilinski of Hungary (82 Tokyo Cup), 1:10 is Zoya Grancherova of Bulgaria (83 Europeans), and 2:22 is Rodica Dunca of Romania (81 euros)
They did better tricks than gymnasts do today... yes, maybe it´s more difficult now, but a little bit boring..

I think I should watch more 80s bars. It's the transition - a bit of old bars and a bit of new.
I swear some of the beam tumbling was better than what I see today.
